Pastor’s Letter Christmas 2013 Dear Parish Family, I know that technology, internet, and social networks like Facebook are not everyone’s cup of tea but it is scarcely possible to be alive today and not have at least heard of them. It is the new way that people keep in touch and share what is happening. It’s where people wish each other a happy birthday and show off the pictures of their kids. If you join one of these networks they will ask you to create a profile. So what is a profile? A profile is a collection of things that define who you are. It is kind of like a résumé but more inclusive of many different parts of your life. Your profile includes things like your name, when you were born, and where you live. It can include professional things, like where you went to school, what you studied, and where you work. It can also include more personal things, like the members of your family, the people you belong to, and the people who are your friends. And one of the things that I like the best is that you can say what you like. You can like your favorite club or your church. You can also tell the world about everything else you like from your favorite foods to the music you listen to, the clothes you wear, places you like to go, and just about anything else you like. So what does this have to do with Christmas? Well, one simple way to understand the message of Christmas is that we each belong in God’s profile! In so many different ways the scriptures of Christmas tell us that God likes us! Actually it is even stronger than that – God loves us and in myriad ways assures us of this great truth. St. John tells us that our love for God consists in this: not that we have loved God but that God has first loved us. We call this the Incarnation, a love so profound that God wants only to be with us and live with us. In return for this gift, God asks that we return this love. We return it through the like and love we have for all that is around us, most especially the people around us and this amazing, beautiful, and complicated world in which we live. God’s love is alive in us as we become more willing to include God’s justice, God’s peacefulness, God’s welcome and forgiveness in our lives. It can be pretty busy attending to all these friends in my profile, but then again I am glad that I am among the many in God’s list of friends! Here at Sacred Hearts our mission is welcome. It is the most important thing that our church, any church can do. It is most important to me that you know you are welcome here without regard to your wealth or poverty, your race or ethnicity, your gender or orientation, your saintliness or sinfulness, your successes or failures. You are part of our profile. You define who we are. I am so glad that you are here with us today. You help us to realize and celebrate the great truth of God with us. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

A Note from Religious Education Director

Jennifer Ferrantino A Very Merry and Blessed Christmas to all! The Christmas Pageant was a fantastic way to celebrate Christmas together as a Parish Family! I am so glad that we could share this as a whole parish. The joy in the children’s faces and telling of the story of Jesus’ birth together declares to the world the true meaning of Christmas. I am so impressed and amazed by the students and families who put so much effort and enthusiasm into the pageant. I thank all the students and parents for a job well done. Special Thanks to all of our wonderful Catechists, assistants and helpers who work tirelessly to share the Good News with our students all year long. Many Thanks to our catechists and leaders:

Enjoy your Christmas and New Year Break Our Religious Ed Classes resume Sunday January 5, 2014 or Wednesday January 8, 2014.

What’s New and Exciting: We have received our date for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Perez will be with us on Tuesday, May 13 at 4:30 to celebrate this important step in the lives of our young people. Our students will begin their final

preparation on Sunday, January 26th with a ceremony of enrollment at the 5 PM mass. Our youth group will be the hosts that night preparing a pasta dinner for our candidates and their sponsors. They will then be busy with regular class meetings, choosing a name, and completing service projects.

By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y Canción 2014 © 2013, OCP. All rights reserved
