Allaah says in Soorat Luqmaan (interpretation of the meaning):
“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead
(men) from the path of Allaah! "Luqmaan #$:%&
'he scholar of the ummah, n *Aaas (may Allaah e pleased with him) said: thismeans singing. +uaahid (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: this means playing
the drum (tal). ('afseer al'aari, /$012).
Al3asan al4asri (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: this aayah was re-ealed
concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). ('afseer
n 5atheer, #016$).
AlSa7di (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: this includes all manner of haraam
speech, all idle talk and falsehood, and all nonsense that encourages kufr and
disoedience8 the words of those who say things to refute the truth and argue in
support of falsehood to defeat the truth8 and ackiting, slander, lies, insults and
curses8 the singing and musical instruments of the Shaytaan8 and musical
instruments which are of no spiritual or worldly ene9t. ('afseer alSa7di, %0$62)
n alayyim (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: 'he interpretation of the
Sahaaah and 'aai7in, that *idle talk7 refers to singing, is su;cient. 'his was
reported with saheeh isnaads from n *Aaas and n +as7ood. Au7lSahaa7
said: asked n +as7ood aout the aayah (interpretation of the meaning), *“And of
mankind is he who purchases idle talks7 "Luqmaan #$:%&. 3e said: 4y Allaah, esides
<hom there is no other god, this means singing = and he repeated it three times. t
was also reported with a saheeh isnaad from n *>mar (may Allaah e pleased with
them oth) that this means singing. 'here is no contradiction etween the
interpretation of “idle talk! as meaning singing and the interpretation of it asmeaning stories of the ?ersians and their kings, and the kings of the @omans, and
so on, such as aladr in al3aarith used to tell to the people of +akkah to distract
them from the ur7aan. 4oth of them are idle talk. 3ence n *Aaas said: “dle
talk! is falsehood and singing. Some of the Sahaaah said one and some said the
other, and some said oth. Singing is worse and more harmful than stories of kings,
ecause it leads to Binaa and makes hypocrisy grow (in the heart)8 it is the trap of
the Shaytaan, and it clouds the mind. 'he way in which it locks people from the
ur7aan is worse than the way in which other kinds of false talk lock them,
ecause people are naturally inclined towards it and tend to want to listen to it. 'he
aayaat condemn replacing the ur7aan with idle talk in order to mislead (men) from
the path of Allaah without knowledge and taking it as a oke, ecause when anaayah of the ur7aan is recited to such a person, he turns his ack as if he heard
them not, as if there were deafness in his ear. f he hears anything of it, he makes
fun of it. All of this happens only in the case of the people who are most stuornly
kaa9rs and if some of it happens to singers and those who listen to them, they oth
ha-e a share of this lame. (ghaathat alLahfaan, $0/6C/6D).

“"Allaah said to lees:& And efool them gradually those whom you can among
them with your -oice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allaah7s
disoedience)! "alsraa7 $E:%1&
t was narrated that +uaahid (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: “And efool
them gradually those whom you can among them with your -oice! = his -oice "the
-oice of lees0Shaytaan& is singing and falsehood. n alayyim (may Allaah ha-e
mercy on him) said: 'his idaafah "possessi-e or geniti-e construction, i.e., your
-oice& ser-es to make the meaning speci9c, as with the phrases "translated as&
“your ca-alry! and “your infantry! "later in the same aayah&. F-eryone who speaks
in any way that is not oedient to Allaah, e-eryone who lows into a Gute or other
woodwind instrument, or who plays any haraam kind of drum, this is the -oice of
the Shaytaan. F-eryone who walks to commit some act of disoedience towards
Allaah is part of his "the Shaytaan7s& infantry, and anyone who rides to commit sin is
part of his ca-alry. 'his is the -iew of the Salaf, as n *Ai 3aatim narrated from n
*Aaas: his infantry is e-eryone who walks to disoey Allaah. (ghaathat al
Lahfaan).
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Ho you then wonder at this recitation (the ur7aan)I
And you laugh at it and weep not,
<asting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)!
"alam 6#:6D%$&
*krimah (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: it was narrated from n *Aaas
that alsumood "-eral noun from saamidoon, translated here as “<asting your
(precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)!& means “singing!, in the
dialect of 3imyar8 it might e said “smidi lanaa! "*sing for us7 = from the same root
as saamidoon0sumood& meaning “ghaniy! "sing&. And he said (may Allaah ha-e
mercy on him): <hen they "the kuJaar& heard the ur7aan, they would sing, then
this aayah was re-ealed.
n 5atheer (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: Allaah says (interpretation of the
meaning) “<asting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)! =
Sufyaan al'hawri said, narrating from his father from n *Aaas: (this means)singing. 'his is Kemeni (dialect): ismad lana means ghan lana "sing to us&. 'his was
also the -iew of *krimah. ('afseer n 5atheer).
t was reported from Au >maamah (may Allaah e pleased with him) that the
+essenger of Allaah (peace and lessings of Allaah e upon him) said: “Ho not sell
singing sla-e women, do not uy them and do not teach them. 'here is nothing
good in this trade, and their price is haraam. oncerning such things as this the

aayah was re-ealed (interpretation of the meaning): *And of mankind is he who
purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah7
"Luqmaan #$:%&.! (3asan hadeeth)
'he +essenger of Allaah (peace and lessings of Allaah e upon him) said:
“Among my ummah there will certainly e people who permit Binaa, silk, alcohol and
musical instruments! (arrated y al4ukhaari ta7leeqan, no. 66D28 narrated as
mawsool y al'aaraani and al4ayhaqi. See alSilsilah alSaheehah y alAlaani,
D$).
n alayyim (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: 'his is a saheeh hadeeth
narrated y al4ukhaari in his Saheeh, where he quoted it as e-idence and stated
that it is mu7allaq and maBoom. 3e said: hapter on what was narrated concerning
those who permit alcohol and call it y another name.
'his hadeeth indicates in two ways that musical instruments and enoyment of
listening to music are haraam. 'he 9rst is the fact that the ?rophet (peace and
lessings of Allaah e upon him) said: “"they& permit! which clearly indicates that
the things mentioned, including musical instruments, are haraam according to
sharee7ah, ut those people will permit them. 'he second is the fact that musical
instruments are mentioned alongside things which are de9nitely known to e
haraam, i.e., Binaa and alcohol: if they (musical instruments) were not haraam, why
would they e mentioned alongside these thingsI (adapted from alSilsilah al
Saheehah y alAlaani, $0$12$1$)
Shaykh alslam (n 'aymiyah) (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: 'his hadeeth
indicates that ma7aaBif are haraam, and ma7aaBif means musical instruments
according to the scholars of (Araic) language. 'his word includes all suchinstruments. (al+amoo7, $$06#6).
n alayyim (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: And concerning the same topic
similar comments were narrated from Sahl in Sa7d alSaa7idi, *mraan in 3usayn,
*AdAllaah in *Amr, *AdAllaah in *Aaas, Au 3urayrah, Au >maamah al
4aahili, *Aa7ishah >mm al+u7mineen, *Ali in Ai 'aali, Anas in +aalik, *Ad al
@ahmaan in Saait and alMhaaBi in @aee7ah. 'hen he mentioned it in ghaathat
alLahfaan, and it indicates that they (musical instruments) are haraam.
t was narrated that aa97 (may Allaah ha-e mercy on him) said: n *>mar heard a
woodwind instrument, and he put his 9ngers in his ears and kept away from thatpath. 3e said to me, N aa97, can you hear anythingI said, o. So he took his
9ngers away from his ears and said: was with the ?rophet (peace and lessings of
Allaah e upon him) and he heard something like this, and he did the same thing.
(Saheeh Ai Hawood). Some insigni9cant person said that this hadeeth does not
pro-e that musical instruments are haraam, ecause if that were so, the +essenger
of Allaah (peace and lessings of Allaah e upon him) would ha-e instructed n
*>mar (may Allaah e pleased with them oth) to put his 9ngers in his ears as well,

and n *>mar would ha-e instructed aa97 to do likewiseO 'he response to this is:
3e was not listening to it, ut he could hear it. 'here is a diJerence etween
listening and hearing. Shaykh alslam (n 'aymiyah) (may Allaah ha-e mercy on
him) said: oncerning (music) which a person does not intend to listen to, there is
no prohiition or lame, according to scholarly consensus. 3ence lame or praise is
connected to listening, not to hearing. 'he one who listens to the ur7aan will e
rewarded for it, whereas the one who hears it without intending or wanting to will
not e rewarded for that, ecause actions are udged y intentions. 'he same
applies to musical instruments which are foridden: if a person hears them without
intending to, that does not matter. (al+amoo7, $20EC
