Dear Parish Family, This week I attended the funeral of Bishop James J. Daly, who passed away on October 14. Jim was an auxiliary bishop in our diocese and was active from 1977 until his retirement in 1996. If you were a young adult in those days, there is a good chance the Bishop Daly was the bishop who confirmed you. Among the priests of our diocese, Bishop Daly was known for his quiet sense of wisdom and kindness. He was a true peacemaker in many difficult situations and could always be counted on to do or say the right thing. Bishop Daly was also the bishop who ordained me and my classmate, Fr. Chris Heller. Over the years we would often get together with him near the date of our ordination. I particularly remember the three of us having dinner to celebrate our tenth anniversary. We thought ten years was a long time to be a priest. He laughed at us. He knew we had a long way to go. At his funeral Mass, I was thinking about how the gift of priesthood came to me through his blessing. One of our beliefs as Catholics, is that each priest can trace his ordination back to Jesus and the apostles. There are even websites that allow one to trace this priestly history. Most priests can trace their ordination back to the 1500’s – bishop by bishop. In my case, Bishop Daly was ordained by Bishop McGann who was ordained by Bishop Kellenberg and then to Cardinal McIntyre, Cardinal Spellman, and Cardinal Pacelli, who became Pope Pius XII. I can actually count 20 more generations into the 16th century, at which point the history becomes a little complicated. Still, tracing ones history back 25 generations is not too bad. But such inheritance is not unique to priests. Every one of us has received faith from another: from parents and grandparents, from godparents and sponsors. Faith is even inherited from people who bear no ordinary relationship to us but who have inspired us with their lives. Think about yourself as a believer. Who has inspired you to think, believe, and live as you do? Who makes you who you are as a Christian man or woman? Next week we celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Both days remind us to honor those who have gone before us and have given us the gift of faith. Some are famous in the history of the church; some are honored by only a few family and friends. That part matters little. What does matter is that each of us takes our turn in passing along the gift of faith. Sincerely yours in Christ,

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) We hold weekly meetings to discuss the Catholic faith beginning with an “inquiry” phase to answer questions and explore some of the teachings of the Church. We meet on Wednesday at 3 PM.

Faith in our Modern World :: What do We Believe About the Life

to Come Monday October 28 at 7 PM with Fr. Mike Vetrano In November - the month of All Saints and All Souls - we turn our

attention to faith in eternal life. Catholic Faith in the Resurrection lies at

the center of our religion but what do we believe and what can we know

about life beyond the grave. In this lecture we will look at many facets of

this reality including: What the gospels tell us about risen life? What do

we mean by resurrection of the body? Can we be present to those who have died and are they present

to us? Is there any evidence of eternal life? What do other religions have to say about life after death?

The process for admission to Our Lady of the Hamptons

School for the 2014-15 school year is already under way.

Information packets are available leading toward acceptance

into Kindergarten through grade 8, as well as the pre-school

The annual Bucks for Books raffle to benefit OLH is beginning now, and will

culminate in the grand drawing on December 16, with the big winner claiming the

$15,000 jackpot. Tickets are available at the school 283-9140.

RELIGIOUS AWARDS FOR CATHOLIC GIRL and BOY

SCOUTS A Scout is reverent. A scout is reverent toward God. A scout is faithful in religious duties and re-

spects the convictions of others in matters of custom and religion. A scout has a duty to God.

The Ave Maria and Family of God religious medals are available for Brownie Girl Scouts in the 2nd or 3rd grades.

The Light of Christ medal is available for Tiger or Wolf Scouts in 1st or 2nd grade. The Parvuli Dei medal is available for Bear and Webelo scouts in the 3rd, 4th or 5th grades.

Workbooks are to be completed with the help of a parent or guardian by May 1st. These awards are presented at our church on Scout Sunday in June.

The I live My Faith, Regina Coeli, Marian, Saint Agnes and Spirit Alive awards are offered in the Junior through Ambassador Program Levels of girl scouting.

The Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII awards are offered for boy scouts 7th – 12th grades. The scout works with a group under the guidance of a trained adult consultant. These Awards are pre-sented each year at the Catholic Scout Convocation at St. Agnes Cathedral.

e St. Agnes Medal of Service Each year the St. Agnes Medal of Service is awarded to an individual or couple who have served

their parish community and church in an exemplary way. This year the St. Agnes Medal will be

awarded to Bob and Marsha Terry. Bob has been a wonderful steward for our parish who always

steps forward to help us in times of need. He has been a

tireless supporter of Catholic education, always willing

to help at OLH or McGann-Mercy. Marsha is a leader

in many ministries here at SHJM. She is an active

catechist and has given her time and talent to

photographing our church for our Jubilee journal and the

materials to help others appreciate the beauty and history

of our Basilica church. Marsha is an avid supporter of

Catholic scouting. She has mentored many of the young

men and women of our community as they achieve their

Catholic scouting awards. The St. Agnes Medal will be presented to Bob and Marsha by Bishop

Murphy in a ceremony at St. Agnes Cathedral on October 27.

Music at the Basilica The Kings Chapel Full Gospel Choir returns to the Basilica On Saturday, November 23rd, at 6:30 PM we will welcome back the Kings Chapel Full Gospel Choir in a special Thanksgiving concert .

Come together to raise our voices at this most thankful time of the year! The Kings Chapel Choir was one of our most popular events last year. If you missed them the first time—make plans to attend this year’s concert!.

The Feast of All Saints is a holy day of obligation. Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 31st at 7 PM. This All Hallows Eve mass will be our Family Mass for the feast and children are invited to attend dressed as Saints!

On Friday, November 1st, mass will be celebrated at 8:00 AM & at 12 Noon.

013 Sharing the Gospel

During Mass you will hear the priest and people say, "Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy." It means, "Lord, forgive me." You are human. You will make mistakes. God is proud when you are honest and admit that you did something wrong. He smiles when you forgive yourself and others. He frowns when you talk and act like you are better than others. God wants you to do right. Prayer Lord, please forgive me. Something to Draw Draw yourself at home or church praying to ask God to forgive you. Mission for the Week I will ask God for forgiveness morning, noon, and night.
