A fresh approach to cost-effective tidal energy

www.sustainablemarine.com

SME is aiming to deliver the next generation tidal platform technology that will challenge the current tidal energy industry on price and performance. With its team of marine engineers, SME will build, deploy and maintain PLAT-O systems for a wide range of customers.

PLAT-O is a tidal platform designed to host tidal turbines that will generate power from the tides; one of the Earth’s most abundant and reliable renewable energy sources. Logistics experts in the UK and France have won €1.9 million funding to find ways of more efficiently configuring the supply chain of offshore wind farms, in order to optimise the per unit electricity generation costs.

The Universities of Portsmouth, Le Havre and Plymouth are looking at reducing the cost of setting up and maintaining offshore wind farms as part of this European Union initiative. The main objectives of the project are as follows:

Development of decision support tools to enable offshore wind operators, manufacturers, ports, and contractors to optimise their costs and reduce the currently high logistics costs associated with erecting and maintaining offshore wind farms.

Modelling of navigation through offshore wind farms. Reconciling the preferences of the different maritime space users.

Undertake comprehensive joint studies on the supply chain of offshore wind farms through their life cycle.

Training for a job less ordinary....

Belay is a training company based at Brighton Shoreham Airport. We are full audited members of The Industrial Rope Access Trade Association. IRATA is the global leader for the working at height industry. The qualification is recognised on every continent and it has an unrivalled safety record built up over 30 years in the offshore sector.

Belay is a young, dynamic company with a passion for safety and a mission to produce exceptional quality rope access technicians who are able to maintain that standard. We already train technicians from the offshore wind energy industry. Our graduates are working in blade repair and electrical installation all over the UK and abroad.

We also want to inspire young people in college and those leaving the military with technical skills, who are looking for an exciting career.

By March 2015 we will offer full Basic Safety Training in line with the Global Wind Organisation (GWO). With only 4 providers doing this in the UK, we want to set the standard for training. We will fill a huge geographical gap on the south coast ready to meet the demand created by the Isle of Wight and Rampion fields.
