All Saints’ Day brings forth several important facets of our faith. The day would not exist were it not for the death and resurrection of Jesus, our Savior. All Saints Day is, therefore, always a celebration of the hope of the resurrection, as St. Paul wrote to the ancient Thessalonians – “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.” (1 Thess. 4:13-14) When writing to the early Christian communities, the Apostle Paul referred to them as those called to be or are, saints, holy ones because of Christ. But of course, this does not mean they were ideal Christians, perfect in every way, but rather that because in faith they lived in Christ, they, though sinners, were also holy. Thus Luther arrived at his famous statement: “We are a one and the same time saints and sinners.” All those who have lived and died in the faith are saints. Trusting in the resurrection and our inclusion in Christ, with love and hope we remember those who have gone before us in the journey of faith, trusting that they are safe and happy in the presence of God. We live in that hope for them, our loved ones and ourselves. All Saints Day, therefore, affords us the opportunity to remember all the saints, and certainly those who have been important to our Christian life. “The light of Christ. Thanks be to God!”

ALL SAINTS’ SUNDAY

All Saints’ day is a tradition in many denominations, including the ELCA.

For since we believe that Jesus

died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.” (1 Thess. 4:13-14)

When writing to the early Christian communities, the Apostle Paul referred to them as those called to be or are, saints, holy ones because of Christ. But of course, this does not mean they were ideal

Christians, perfect in every way, but rather that because in faith they lived in Christ, they, though sinners, were also holy. Thus Luther arrived at his famous statement: “We are a one and the same

time saints and sinners.” All those who have lived and died in the faith are saints.

Trusting in the resurrection and our inclusion in Christ, with love and hope we remember those who have gone before us in the journey of faith, trusting that they are safe and happy

in the presence of God. We live in that hope for them, our loved ones and ourselves.

All Saints Day, therefore, affords us the opportunity to remember all the saints, and certainly those who have been important to our Christian life.

“The light of Christ. Thanks be to God!”

Scripture Readings for November 6, 2016 All Saints’ Sunday:

Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18

The book of Daniel was written in the second century BCE, when the Syrian king Antiochus

Epiphanes was severely persecuting the Jews.

Daniel’s vision of the four beasts serves to proclaim the message that human

kings will come and go, but the kingdom will ultimately

belong to God and to God’s people.

Ephesians 1:11-23

After giving thanks for the faith of the Ephesians, Paul

prays that they might understand the wisdom,

hope, and power of God that is embodied in Jesus Christ.

Luke 6:20-31

In echoes of the prophet Isaiah and Mary’s song of

praise, Jesus reveals surprising things about who

enjoys blessing and who endures woe. He invites his disciples to shower radical love, blessing, forgiveness, generosity, and trust, even to enemies and outsiders.

Sermon Title:

We Remember and Give Praise to God

by Pastor Dave Daugs

All Saints’ Sunday

All Saints' Day celebration has a long history in the worship life of the Christian Church.

It began as a commemoration of the martyrs who had died for the faith,

and it has since become a day when we honor and remember those who,

in death, have joined the Church Triumphant, as well as the faithful saints of the present

who serve Jesus Christ. Martin Luther held that all Christians are

simultaneously sinner and saint-- a sinner because of our rebellious nature, but a saint because of salvation in Jesus.

What would like to do?

Here’s an idea! Make a positive impact on the Sunday experience of all who enter here!

Flowers are indeed an enhancement to our worship space.

Their significance is evident when we celebrate blessed occasions such as marriages and anniversaries and births. A flower’s

beauty and scent comforts us as we mourn and remember loved ones who have died. For centuries, flowers have held a

significant role in the house of God. And I believe we can all agree that weekly floral arrangements offer much

to our worship settings here at Emmanuel. This Servant Opportunity can’t be any easier! Just contact the

church office (by phone, email, or just stop in!), let us know what day you wish to provide flowers, bring your gift to church on

Sunday and place it on the Altar, then take it home to enjoy after service! It’s that simple!

Arrangements can be from your garden, made from wheat or twigs, from a flower shop, or ??? Please see Deb Dumroese if you have any questions.

If you wish to dedicate to or memorialize someone, please let CindyMarie know before the Emphasis: Weekly Edition deadline.

(Usually Wednesday’s at 6 AM.) Thank you for your service in this important ministry!

There are many ways to be involved in the ministries at Emmanuel.

Just let us know what you hold interest in, what your gifts are, what you like to do!

Your help is always needed and appreciated! Please contact us!
