SEPTEMBER 2018 The Tractor Times Spring Again! Spring has definitely sprung, the bulk of calving will be out of the way and lots of early spring lambs are already on the ground. It’s been great to see some good weather of late and hopefully everyone has come out of winter in good stead, well placed for the new season. As you can see from the photos to the right, progress continues on the build at 93 North Road with steelwork being the next step in the process. We’re starting to see some of the internal layout take shape with the number of pre-fab slabs already in place, and looking forward to being able to welcome you in to the new Invercargill branch mid- way through next calendar year. The new tractors for spring delivery are rolling in and there are good levels of stock available across a range of models for those that didn’t forward order. As always please give any of our sales teams a call if you’d like to discuss your business operations and how we could potentially help out. A reminder that we also have a wide range of quality machinery available to support your needs (some of these brands featured later in the publication). A reminder on a health and safety front to ensure you have provided us with your H & S plan where required so we can comply with any requirements and be made aware of any hazards on entering your property. Please send these plans to [email protected]. We have a John Deere tractor platform specialist coming out from Australia in early September to work with our service technicians on diagnostics training. This is a great opportunity for the team to keep up with the latest developments in technology and general approach to diagnostics. If you’re in need of any servicing and repairs please give your local service manager a call. As some may have seen on social media, Southland Farm Machinery now have a parts van on the road covering both Otago and Southland. For more information see the article on page 4. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 2 years since the fire that destroyed the building at 93 North Road. The biggest thing that still sticks in our minds following the devastation was the outstanding support from everyone, for which we are so very grateful.

What a mammoth effort it has been to rebuild from that - here’s where we’re up to now...

Training TimeEight of our service technicians undertook some interactive service training on 7R and 8R machines in early August.

This is Instructor led with trainers from John Deere in the USA who take the training live with 5 other dealerships from Australia. This equates to about 50 students in total and 2 John Deere presenters.

If you look carefully above the picture with the screen they are viewing with the live presenter, up the top of the screen are the video feeds of the dealerships taking part.

We joined a roadshow of exhibitors including GWD Toyota, GWD Holden, and Lexus of Queenstown, Ewan Allan Honda, Farmlands and Meridian Energy and headed to display our wares at the Fiordland Events Centre in Te Anau, for the second ever Te Anau Lakeside Field Days.

This year the weather was much kinder to us, and gave everyone a chance to have a good look at what everyone had to offer.

Lakeside Field Days

This was also the first time we were able to get the Parts Connect van out and about to bring you some John Deere merchandise, and just in time for Fathers Day too!

Thanks to everyone that came out and said hi, and supported the fundraising BBQ for Mararoa and Te Anau schools.

We welcome Richard Anderson onboard as the new Operations Manager responsible for our Mosgiel and Cromwell branches.

Richard is born and bred in Otago, originally coming from a family sheep and beef farm from inland Otago.

He spent some time overseas in the early days, but the last 20

years has been spent in the Farm Machinery industry, so brings with him an in-depth knowledge and experience of farming practices and the industry.

Actively involved in the community and board member for a couple of trusts, Richard also still finds time for a run around the rugby field, as well as some hunting and fishing with his family and 3 children when time allows.

Welcome Aboard RichardA few staff changes have taken place in the Mosgiel branch recently, with the departure of Branch Manager Daniel Thomson, and Parts Consultant Shay White.

Daniel decided after 10 years with us that it was time for a career change and is now venturing into Real Estate. Daniel has been a valuable part of the team in Mosgiel and his wealth of knowledge will be missed. We wish Daniel and Shay all the best.

In Cromwell Sam Frame has moved from the workshop to take on a sales role, and Josh Drummond joined the team in the workshop to replace him.

Stacey Hitchens was the Gore Branch Manager, now the Operations Manager for Southland, meaning he is now responsible for both Gore and Invercargill branches.

We’re in the process of recruiting in Mosgiel, so watch this space for updates on some fresh faces joining the team.

Have You Seen A Deere Fly?

What do you do when you need to get your new John Deere Compact Utility Tractor to an island? You get a helicopter and fly it of course!

Not to be mistaken for the next Mission Impossible film, this was a well planned and executed exercise to get the new Oraka Aparima Runanga tractor to its new base on Centre Island.

This was a co-ordinated effort from Southern Lakes Helicopters, Oraka Runanga, Sales Consultant Pete Leonard, and service Technician Dave Hart.

Because of the weight the 2032R was separated into 3 pieces, each taken over in a separate trip. Dave travelled over to the island to put the pieces back together once confirming that everything had arrived safely.

Previously we have transported equipment to the Island by barge, however it was decided that the 2032R would be suitable to fly - we should add this to the list of features this machine comes with!

Middle Right: the 2023R as a full unit with loader and backhoe, before being prepared for its flight

Bottom Right: Phase 2 - preparing each piece to be transported

Top Right: the very remote Centre Island

Oil Promo WinnersDuring June and July we offered you a great deal on our 205L drums of genuine John Deere Plus 50II Engine Oil and HY-Gard Transmission & Hydraulic Oil, hopefully you got in on this while it lasted!

As a bonus every drum purchased also put you in the draw to win 1 of 4 (one per branch), 8400R Year of the Tractor toys - there are new models released each month, but limited numbers of each - so pop into your nearest branch if you’re interested in these limited edition models (they make great gifts).

AND HERE ARE OUR WINNERS -

Top Left & Middle: we have lift off!

Thanks to Flett Contracting for sending us this picture of their John Deere 7230R, with 4 axle trailer that can handle up to 24 bales at once! it’s always great to see the green and gold workhorses in the field doing what they are designed to do.

There is so much beautiful countryside that is so remote that we don’t often get to see it. If you have any pictures you think we’d like to see and maybe share, email them to [email protected]. If possible include a little info about where you are, what you’re up to, and what model John Deere you have doing the job for you!

JUNE 2018

The Tractor Times

Winter Time!By the time you read this, Gypsy day will have come and gone, animals will be well into their winter regime, and those that are able to take a break at this time of year will be packing their bags and heading for warmer climates. The cooler temperatures of late have certainly heightened the teams anticipation for getting into the new building prior to the next winter and it’s been great to see the progress up at 93 North Road.

The Southland Farm Machinery team have been kept busy with the number of new units sold and while there have been challenges for farmers of late, the recent payout announcement and current schedules all point to a continued positive year ahead. When thinking through your future machinery requirements, please engage with the team early, while we carry a wide range of stock, a forward order is your opportunity to build a tractor from the ground up in the most cost effective manner.

Autumn and Winter tend to be the times that suit for sending the team away for training and upskilling. While the list below may look substantial, it’s absolutely critical to our operation that we keep up to date with both process and technology changes so that we can provide you an appropriate service across all functions of the business.

Our sales team have been away brushing up on their sales techniques with Peter Giroux and Paul McCabe (trainers) in Christchurch, they also have upcoming product training on the John Deere 5000 series Ag and Speciality tractors.

A number from the Parts teams are heading over to the John Deere Australia/New Zealand Distribution Centre (ANZDC) for training and to review the distribution centres logistics and outbound freight capabilities.

And our Integrated Solutions training for Sales, Parts and Technicians will continue through June 2018 focussed on the Precision Ag suite of products including, displays, receivers, and autotrac.

If any of these topics interest you, I’m sure the sales, service or parts teams will be more than happy to have a chat.

Consents are through, tender process is complete and Henderson Construction is underway with the new build at 93 North Road. First part of the project has been construction of a new shed, and the priority is on getting a functioning workshop up and running as soon as possible. It’s a pretty big job, but we’ll keep you updated with the progress - we’re all looking forward to the Grand Opening!
