Issue 115 October 26, 2017 All Pinked out with Someplace to Go!! Tyler Pipe has long had a tradition to take a moment in October and snap some pictures and remember / salute those folks that are fighting or have fought the good fight against cancer. This year we had a duo of hero's to give credit to as we reflect on the challenges and successes of Cathy Parker & Dottie Armstrong. My dear friend Cathy has been 23 years in remission but continues her vigilance. Just to revisit my conversation with Cathy, she said having a strong support group is key. Cathy said that God, her family and friends were what got her through the tough times. I had a chance to sit down with Dottie Armstrong who very recently won her battle with cancer. Dottie strongly suggested that each person take charge of their health and make a plan for early detection. She made it very clear that had she not found her cancer as early as she did, that her outcome would have been very different. She suggested mammograms and regular doctor visits. Dottie also stressed the importance of remaining positive and informed. She stated that there is so much information on the web that it is impera- tive for a patient to discuss treatment options with their healthcare provider. Her physician suggested radiation and it was only after an informed search that she found out that the radiation would damage other parts of her body. Therefore she elected surgery that rid her of the cancer instead of the radiation. Of course each case is different but staying informed and positive is a must. So if you are looking for a hero in October, we have a couple right around the corner. By Scott Harris PG Environmental Manager On August 1, 2017 folks at the Arkema Group Chemical Plant near the Texas Gulf Coast never imagined that their lives were about to be turned upside down. Just like Tyler Pipe, Arkema had Hazardous Waste Contingency Plans, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans, Air Permits, Storm Water Permits, and Computer Based Training for all of them. Then on August 27th along came Hurricane Harvey. Flooding cut off the power supply, meaning chemicals could not be stored at the appropriate temperatures. And then, when even the backup generators failed, the site erupted in flames with two explosions exposing the plant and the surrounding neighborhoods to noxious fumes. Despite their training and backup plans Harvey closed Arkema down. What is the lesson for us in all of this? It is that things do not always go as expected. Therefore we train for the unexpected. Hurricanes, fires, and tornados do not just impact Tyler Pipe production and property they impact each team member. We reduce that impact by training and planning. That is why we have Computer Based Training and Tool box talks that go over the same subjects year after year. We train so that our response is second nature, it becomes the “right thing to do”. It becomes automatic! No one can read the future, but we train for the worst, expect the best and when our “Hurricane Harvey” shows up, in our personal life or at work, we will have a plan and the training to overcome it. All Pinked out with Someplace to Go!! Tyler Pipe has long had a tradition to take a moment in October and snap some pictures and remember / salute those

folks that are fighting or have fought the good fight against cancer. This year we had a duo of hero's to give credit to

as we reflect on the challenges and successes of Cathy Parker & Dottie Armstrong. My dear friend Cathy has been 23

years in remission but continues her vigilance. Just to revisit my conversation with Cathy, she said having a strong

support group is key. Cathy said that God, her family and friends were what got her through the tough times.

I had a chance to sit down with Dottie Armstrong who very recently won her battle with cancer. Dottie strongly

suggested that each person take charge of their health and make a plan for early detection. She made it very clear that

had she not found her cancer as early as she did, that her outcome would have been very different. She suggested

mammograms and regular doctor visits. Dottie also stressed the importance of remaining positive and informed. She

stated that there is so much information on the web that it is impera-

tive for a patient to discuss treatment options with their healthcare

provider. Her physician suggested radiation and it was only after an

informed search that she found out that the radiation would damage

other parts of her body. Therefore she elected surgery that rid her of

the cancer instead of the radiation.

Of course each case is different but staying informed and positive is

a must. So if you are looking for a hero in October, we have a couple

right around the corner.

Flooding cut off the power supply, meaning chemicals could not be stored at the appropriate temperatures. And then, when even the backup generators failed, the site erupted in flames with two explosions exposing the plant

and the surrounding neighborhoods to noxious fumes. Despite their training and backup plans Harvey closed Arkema down.

On Saturday,

September 30th

Tyler Pipe team

members participat-

ed in the first annual

Tyler Zero Prostate

Cancer Run/Walk.

The ZERO Prostate

Cancer Run/Walk series is the premier program of

ZERO - The End of Prostate Cancer, the leading

national nonprofit organization with the mission to end

prostate cancer. The event was a time when our

community came together, raising funds and sharing

hope to declare one number above others: ZERO. Our

Tyler Pipe Team had the honor of possessing the

largest team at 34 members and came in third for the l

largest donations raised. The event did meet their goal

and surpassed it by raising $115,516 to support their

program.

Some numbers: Approximately 25 plus

survivors were in attendance, 529 participants

registered and there were over 80 plus

volunteers on race day. At ZERO, 94 cents of

every dollar donated goes toward lifesaving

programs so our group was confident that their

time was well spent for our local community.

To learn more about ZERO visit

www.zerocancer.org.

On Tuesday, October 17th, our friends from Matheson Gas

came out to Tyler Pipe and provided an appreciation luncheon

for their loyal customers. Matheson Gas has been in the Tyler

area since 1977 and Tyler Pipe has been purchasing our gas

and welding supplies almost from the beginning. To show their

appreciation, Luke Porter and his team brought out their BBQ

pit, serving tables & trough cooler and fed over 250 hungry

Tyler Pipe team members. As you can see from the pics their

set up was second to none. Luke said that Matheson Gas put

the pit trailer together to travel around their supply area and

do appreciation events like the one held today.

On behalf of all the Team Members from Tyler Pipe, I

would like to say a heart-

felt Thank You for the meal

and your continued service

to our organization.

Even though the Texas Rangers did not make it to the pennant race this year, a few lucky team members enjoyed the high life of luxury in a stocked suite fit for a king at Globe Life Park. These go-getters were winners of the Choice Awards for 2017. Let me jog your memory. At the beginning of the year the Event Committee selected 10 community activities that Tyler Pipe would participate in. Well every team member who participated in at least 50% of the community events spon-sored by Tyler Pipe had an opportunity to win the Choice Award. Everyone who qualifies is given a choice between going to see the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas or they are given a set of gift cards to Studio Movie Grill. Dinner and a movie for two, Nice! All those who attended the game had a great time. Just the experience of watching a major league baseball game from the comforts of a luxury suite with all the amenities was the ultimate experience. Participation in the community events is voluntary and has grown from when we first started this program. The Event Committee is always looking for new events and ways to positively impact our community so if you have an idea on how we can participate, please reach out to a member of the committee or stop by HR. If you are like me and you are not a runner, there are other opportunities to help. Some of our Team Members walk the course while others choose to volunteer their time by assisting in registration or passing out water for the runners. However you would like to do it, we are always looking for participants. Remember, Tyler Pipe pays for your entry fee and a guest for all of the events; and who knows, you may be the winner of the Choice Awards and receive two gift certificates for Studio Movie Grill or get to watch the Texas Rangers on their home field. So come on, get in and get involved!

WINNERS OF THE 2017 TYLER PIPE CHOICE AWARDS!

HR Hits Birmingham! Two days traveling and 2 1/2 days in class left us just

a little time to engage in some extracurricular activi-

ties like zip lining. Faye and I had a chance to soar

through the Alabama wild life tethered to a rope and

had a pretty good time doing it. I will never forget as

long as I live, right before Faye stepped off the side

of the tower she said, “I don’t think I like this.” Ha!

ber

s! Did you know? Our Controller, Heath Huffstetter is an actor as well as a Certified Public

Accountant! Who knew. For the last 3 years Heath has been affiliated with several theatre

groups that have performed in and around the Tyler area. A group of us had a chance to take

in one of the shows at the Henderson Civic Theatre and was glad that we attended. Heath not

only acted in the production but was the main character in Ken Ludwig’s Leading Ladies. A

story of two down on their luck actors that find an opportunity to experience the American

Dream even if they are from England. The twist comes when they learn that they are not to be

portraying the nephews of an heiress, but the nieces. Heath did a fine job playing the characters

of Leo as well as Maxine which was no easy feat considering Heath had to do his best to speak

in an English accent not only for his male character but also that of his female character.
