he importance of children being able to read at or above their grade
level is certainly no secret. In recent years, the value of early childhood
literacy, especially children being able to read at grade level by the third
grade, has been established.
Given the challenges facing our children, literacy at all levels is vital for processing infor-
mation, fostering creativity and making informed decisions. Statistically, the odds of chil-
dren graduating high school and succeeding later in life have a direct correlation to their
reading at the proper level by the third grade.
Vegas PBS and PBS nationally have a long history of promoting literacy. Perhaps you are
among the millions across generations who have been raised and instructed by Sesame
Street. From Sesame Street, brought to
you by your favorite letter, to many
other shows such as Martha Speaks and
WordGirl, PBS makes a difference help-
ing children read and learn. Locally,
Vegas PBS and our Ready To Learn
(RTL) project has for many years pro-
vided literacy services and materials to
families. The RTL project has grown to
providing the community more than
60,000 new, curriculum-correlated
books and 800 workshops last year alone. These results would not be possible without the
support of the many donors, corporations, foundations and grants who share our goal of
supporting family literacy. As part of our literacy commitment, Vegas PBS provides a Young
Writers and Illustrators Contest that allows young children a unique and exciting opportu-
nity to showcase their literary and artistic talents. All students are recognized with a cer-
tificate for their original stories with the potential of receiving prizes and being recognized
on our website.
Stories are due to Vegas PBS no later than Friday, April 11 at 5 p.m. Students and their
families are encouraged to submit their entries prior to the closing date. For full details
and much more information, please visit VegasPBS.org.

ritish drama and mystery have become some of the most anticipated programs in the
Vegas PBS lineup, and this month, we present another tantalizing mystery set in the heart
of the beautiful English countryside. Taking place in the 1950s, Mark Williams stars as
Father Brown, the Catholic priest who also happens to have a particular talent for solving
crimes, in this adaptation of GK Chesterton’s novels.
Father Brown’s world is quintessentially English: drawing rooms in large country houses, miles of
countryside, village halls and secret gardens, as well as country fairs, railway stations and rural parish
churches. Many years spent hearing his parishioners' confessions have given him an uncanny insight
into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. Each episode sees the enigmatic priest
investigate a crime in his own particular way. Full of humor and compassion, but with a big dramatic
twist each time, this series remains true to the period charm of the original character and setting
while bringing a contemporary edge to the storytelling.

ThisWeek’s PicksPeter, Paul and Mary 25th Anniversary ConcertFriday, March 14 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10
n 1986, the legendary trio Peter, Paul and Mary marked their 25th anniversary with the
taping of their very first PBS special. Now, more than 50 years after the formation of the
group in Greenwich Village, this joyous yet deeply moving live concert is rebroadcast. The
special features songs that became, for many, the soundtrack of their generation. In an era
in which folk music became America’s messenger of hope, Peter, Paul & Mary sounded a call to
conscience that, to this day, remains an enduring part of our national quest for equity and jus-
tice. Songs include such timeless classics as “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “If I Had a Hammer,”
“Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” Repeats

Apollo 17: The Untold Story of the Last Men on the MoonThursday, March 20 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy committed the resources of our nation andlaunched Project Apollo – the greatest technological undertaking in the history of mankind. However, only two years after Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, public and politicalinterest in Apollo had dwindled. The final moon landing occurred in December 1972. This fas-cinating special recounts that historic voyage. The documentary features spectacular NASAfootage and exclusive interviews with space scientists, some of whom worked on the Apolloprogram during the 1960s and 1970s. It is the remarkable story of the determination andcourage of a generation, a tribute to three brave astronauts and the thousands of men andwomen behind them during the final days of NASA’s Apollo program.

Life in the Undergrowth:Silk SpinnersThursday, March 20 at 8 p.m.on Vegas PBS Channel 10This four-part series examines the bizarre, ferocious and surprisingly beautiful worldof the invertebrates. This week’s thirdinstallment explores the wonders of silk.Silk is the invertebrates’ great invention. From the protective stalks of lacewingeggs to the amazing hanging threads ofNew Zealand’s ‘glow worms’, they use it ina huge range of ways. The spiders, though, have taken silk-spinning to extremes. Thecommon wolf spider has no web, but thefemale is a gentle parent, encasing hereggs in silk and carrying the precious bun-dle wherever she goes. Then there is thebolas spider that uses a ball of sticky silksoaked in a copy of moth pheromone tolure them in. Finally we meet communalspiders: millions of individuals living andfeeding together in a vast, towering web –an arachnophobe’s nightmare perhaps buttruly fascinating behavior, nevertheless! The series concludes next Thursday withIntimate Relations.

Da Vinci: The Lost TreasureTuesday, March 25 at 10:30p.m. on Vegas PBS RewindLeonardo da Vinci is considered by manyto be one of the greatest artists who everlived. She begins herjourney in Da Vinci’s birthplace, the smalltown of Vinci in Tuscany, and follows in hisfootsteps to Florence, where he wasapprenticed to the master painterVerrocchio. In Paris, Fiona learns thesecret of how Da Vinci achieved theextraordinary effect of the Mona Lisa. Andin New York, she is given an exclusive pre-view of a sensational discovery: a new DaVinci, thought to have disappeared cen-turies ago, Salvator Mundi, The Savior ofthe World. Seeing StarsThursday, March 27 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10
pace exploration has reached its golden age. Over the last few decades our view of
the cosmos has fundamentally changed due to advances in the design of tele-
scopes. Today, the development of new telescopes means we are on the cusp of a
new era of discovery. The latest telescopes now allow astronomers to observe
objects and events formerly hidden from view in the “invisible universe” – the vast realm that
exists beyond the visible part of the spectrum of light. It is here that breathtaking new discover-
ies are being made, often by chance – giant black holes, supernovas, entire new galaxies – discov-
eries that completely alter our understanding of the universe. From bizarre structures for detect-
ing elusive cosmic rays to epic shrines to science high on desert mountains, the latest telescopes
will change our view of space forever.
