Re-roofing with EPDM

EPDM is a rubber material made when three (Ethylene, Propylene, Diene) single molecules (Monomers) are combined (polymerized) into a compound (terpolymer [Latin ter thrice]).

EPDM comes in flexible sheets (membranes) up to 100 feet long and up to 50 feet wide. Typical thicknesses are 45, 60 (1/16 inch) and 90 mils.

Wind-Venting means that air-valves are installed at strategic places on the roof. Wind-generated vacuum pressure pulls air out of the roof system through the valves, holding the EPDM membrane down.

Modified & Hot Built -Up

Roofing

Asphalt or bitumen is an age old waterproofing material. Modifying compounds, such as SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) improves per-formance.

Modified roofing membranes have become popular since the 1970’s, especially for schools and industrial plants that need a tough, durable roofing material.

Built-Up-Roof (BUR): a roof made of several layers of roof felts laminated together with asphalt (roofer applying hot asphalt with a mop shown in picture). Built-up-roofing has been utilized for over 150 years and remains very popular. Typically, the top layer of felt is flood-coated with asphalt and covered with gravel. Under ideal conditions, a three ply roof (built with 3 layers of felt with hot asphalt between) should last 15 years, 4 or 5 ply roofs should last longer.

roofing materials and installation techniques.

Heat welding a seam

(Thermoplastic Polyolefin) is a thermoplastic made from plastic polymers (as opposed to rubber polymers, used to

make EPDM). They are identified by seams that are heat welded. These seams are as strong or stronger than the membrane itself. TPOs are a “new generation” roofing membrane that combine the weather resistance and low temperature flexibility of EPDM with the puncture resistance, chemical resistance and heat seaming capability of PVC. TPO membrane roofing was introduced in 1994 and has stead-ily grown to about 7% of all new construction. TPO membranes are typically white, reflecting sunlight and reducing cooling costs. Other advantages include resistance to shrinkage and embrittlement. They remain hot-air weldable throughout their service life.
