Transcript of All forms of energy fall under 2 categories: Potential Kinetic.
• All forms of energy fall under 2 categories:
Potential
Kinetic
• This is stored energy that is capable of producing motion.
• This is also energy that gravity works on.
Potential Energy
Potential• Chemical • Nuclear• Stored Mechanical• Gravitational
Eureka Potential
“Good Canoes Never Sink”
Chemical Energy• Energy stored in the
bonds of atoms and molecules.– Examples- • Petroleum
(gasoline) • Natural gas• Batteries• Food
Nuclear Energy
• Energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom
• Energy that holds the nucleus together.
Stored Mechanical Energy
• Energy that is stored in objects by application of a force.
• Example-–Compressed
springs– Stretched rubber bands
Video 1: 1 minutes
Gravitational Energy• Energy of place or
position.–When I hold a ball in
the air - if I let it drop gravity will act on it
• When the ball is let go it becomes an example of
motion energy
Kinetic Energy
• This is energy in motion.
• Kinetic energy is the motion of : –Substances–Electrons–Waves
Kinetic• Thermal• Electrical• Radiant• Motion • Sound
Eureka Kinetic
“TERMS”
Thermal Energy• HEAT• Internal energy in
substances.• Vibration and
movement of atoms and molecules within substances–Geothermal
energy
Electrical Energy• Is the movement of
electrons.– Lightning – Electricity
Radiant Energy• Electromagnetic
energy that travels in transverse (up and down) waves.
• This energy includes:– Visible light– X-rays– Gamma rays– Radio waves
Motion
• Movement of objects or substances from one place to another.–Wind–Hydropower
Sound
• Movement of energy through objects in longitudinal
waves.
