OVERVIEW

HIA is committed to providing quality professional coder development for today’s changing healthcare

environment. Proper training has proven to improve the accuracy of coding DRG, APC and E/M assignment among

professionals. HIA utilizes a SharePoint Learning Management System platform to house various educational modules

(HIALearn). HIALearn, allows enrolled participants on demand access to education sessions in a self-paced environment.

Each education module provides accompanying documents, reference materials, and quizzes to assure the learner is

proficient in their understanding of the course information. Due to HIALearn’s quality content many of the courses are

AAPC or AHIMA approved awarding the learner with certificates for completion.

SITE REQUIREMENTS

For the best possible experience on HIALearn please ensure your computer meets these requirements:

We recommend a high-speed internet connection. Though slower connection speeds will work, videos may take longer to load.

Please use the Internet Explorer (version 7+) or Google Chrome browser. Since HIALearn is built on Sharepoint, a Microsoft product, you may have a better experience using Internet Explorer. Currently we do not recommend Mozilla Firefox.

For the courses that include video please make sure you have Adobe Flash Player installed on your computer. You can download Flash for Internet Explorer here: https://get2.adobe.com/flashplayer/ *Google Chrome users do not have to download Flash as it is built in.

Failure to not meet the above requirements may result in unexpected behavior or poor performance.

ACCOUNT SETUP AND LOGIN

After receiving your Welcome email you be directed to enter your username (usually your email) and pre-defined password at the following URL: https://learning.hiacode.com/

Upon logging in for the first time you be prompted to change your password. Please type in the pre-defined password in the “Old Password” field and fill in the “New” and “Confirm” Password fields. We recommend that you use a capital letter, number and special character such as !, % or @ with your password. *New Password must contain 1 non alphanumeric character

If you are an HIA employee please click on the “HIA Employees” button:

After clicking on the “HIA Employees” button a Browser Authentication Prompt will appear. Type in your HIA Username and Password to login: *You may have to put HIA as the Domain. To do this put “HIA\” in front of your username (HIA\Username) when typing.

After creating your new password you will be presented with the HIALearn dashboard. The dashboard is split into 3 columns with Quick Launch links on the left, Course listing in the center and HIALearn Communications on the right. *Your course access determines what you see and the below image may not reflect that.

Select the desired course by clicking on the “course name” within the Course Listing. This will take you to the course homepage with more information on how to begin. If, at any point, you need to change your password click on your display name in the top right and a dropdown will reveal the “Change Password” link. A prompt will guide you to updating your password. The “Sign Out” option is also available via the dropdown.

If you forget your password please click on the “Forgot Password” link on the login screen, enter your email address into the field and click “Send Password”. An email will be sent to you containing your password.

For security purposes HIALearn allows 5 login attempts. After the 5th attempt your account will be locked and you will need to contact support to unlock it. For technical assistance, please call the HIA Helpdesk at 855.HIA.DESK or email Helpdesk@hiacode.com

COURSE USAGE

Now that your account is set up and you can properly login, begin by browsing the Course List on the Dashboard. On the Dashboard select a desired course by clicking on the “course name” in the Course Listing. Hovering your mouse over the “course name” will display a tooltip with a “course description”.

Clicking on the “course name” will take you to that course’s homepage. Most course homepages are split into 3 columns with Quick Launch links on the left, Course Objectives in the center and Documents on the right. *Your course access determines what you see and the below image may not reflect that.

Most courses provide documents that are needed before you begin a learning module. To download a document hover your mouse over a document to reveal the checkbox. Clicking the checkbox will reveal the “document ribbon” in the navigation bar. Clicking on “download a copy” will prompt you to save the document to your computer. Documents are downloaded one at a time.

Once you have downloaded the necessary documents and read the “Course Objectives” you can look at the available “Course Certification Modules”. Clicking on “click here” will begin the module. *Not all courses contain multiple modules

Each Certification Module may be in the following form:

Quiz: This Module contains a Quiz for completion. *AAPC Certificates require a passing grade.

Survey: This Module contains a Questionnaire for completion.

Learning Path: This Module contains multiple sections including Videos, Quizzes and Surveys. Completing each section is required.

Most of the Certification Modules on HIALearn are in the form of a Learning Path, however some courses only have a Quiz or Survey.

Learning Paths consist of multiple sections that may include a Video, Quiz and Survey. In order to complete the Learning Path you must complete each section. Usually at the end of each section you will see a “Next” or “Finish” link. Please continue to click through to complete. For a Video watch the video and click on “Next” to complete:

For a Quiz answer all the questions and click on “Finish” to submit. Make sure you answer each question as the Quiz will not allow you “Finish” without answering each question. After clicking on “Finish” you may be taken to a feedback screen for the Quiz; click on “Finish” to continue. The last Quiz screen will tell you that “You finished this quiz”, show your score and allow you to “View Certificate” (if earned) or “Review this attempt”. Click on “Finish” to complete the Quiz and continue.

For a Survey answer the questionnaire and click on “Finish”: *Survey’s behave just like Quizzes do.

COURSE REVIEW AND COMPLETION

After completing a Module you may want to go back and review your attempt for further education. This can be done by selecting the appropriate Module Type in the Quick Launch section on the left. Clicking on either Learning Path or Quiz will display all available Modules. Review Process:

Choose the appropriate Quiz or Survey and click on the title revealing a dropdown. Click on “All Attempts” to view your completed attempts:

The Review Screen shows the questions, choices, your answers, correct answers, feedback and Certificate link if available. After reviewing click on “Close” to exit:

In order to complete a course you must complete the course constraint(s), which includes the completion of a Certification Module. Once you complete a course a descriptive email will be sent to you for your records. *The Course Completion email may contain a link to view a certificate. *Some courses may not contain a constraint for completion.

To keep track of the courses that you have completed please refer back to the Course Listing on the Dashboard. Since courses are grouped by their respective category, look for completed courses under the “Completed” area while incomplete courses are listed under the “Incompleted” area:

COURSE CERTIFICATES AND RETRIEVAL

HIALearn offers the following Certificates for completing modules:

AAPC approved Certificate – This certificate is associated with the AAPC Learning Path Module and the Quiz must have a passing grade of 70% or higher.

AHIMA approved Certificate – This certificate is associated with an AHIMA Learning Path, Quiz or Survey Module.

HIALearn Certificate – This certificate is associated with a Learning Path, Quiz or Survey Module.

AAPC Certificates can be retrieved by selecting the appropriate Module Type in the Quick Launch section on the left. Clicking on Learning Path will display all available Modules:

Now the AAPC certificate is available to download. We recommend that you right-click on the Certificate and “Save As” to save a copy to your local computer:

Both AHIMA and HIALearn certificates have different methods of retrieval depending on the course. The following methods are below:

Access the AHIMA Quiz review screen and click on the “View Certificate” link.

Access the Gradebook area and click on the “check” under the “Certificate Issued” column.

Click on the Certificate link in the Course Completion Email. The AHIMA Quiz review screen can be found by selecting the appropriate Module Type in the Quick Launch section on the left. Clicking on Quizzes will display all available Modules:

The Gradebook review screen can be found by selecting the appropriate Module Type in the Quick Launch section on the left. Clicking on Gradebook will display the grades for all Modules available:

The Grades of your completed modules are available to view and if you completed the course you will see a “check” under the field “Certificate Issued”. Click directly on the “check” to view your certificate:

Now the AHIMA or HIALearn certificate is available to download. We recommend that you right-click on the Certificate and “Save As” a copy to your local computer:
