William Bowler became Cornellrsquos first student of

African decent in 1869

Cornell University was founded in 1865by Ezra Cornell who in his 1868 inaugural

address stated ldquoI would found aninstitution where any person can findinstruction in any studyrdquo That same

year Cornell enrolled its first student ofAfrican decent and in 1870 its firstfemale student becoming the first

coeducational school in the Ivy League
