TRYING TO BREAK A RECORD – Bridgeport High students gathered outside the school with bottles of soda and Mentos candy last week to set off their “Mentos Fountains.” The students who participated dropped a piece of Mentos into their soda bottles and watched as a geyser formed.
By CHRIS BUTLER
Bridgeport High School ju-nior T.J. Henry, 17, dropped a piece of Mentos candy into a bottle of soda and watched as the drink shot out to a height of almost 10 feet, like a gey-
ser. He ran away before he
could get “sploshed.”Henry and about 500 other
Bridgeport High students gathered outside the school before the lunch hour Tues-day to drop the candy into al-
most 600 bottles of soda. Rosalinda Scott, the sci-
ence teacher who helped co-ordinate the event, said the school holds an assembly every year to motivate stu-dents to perform better on the TAKS test.
“Everything was supposed to go off at the same time, but some students got a little anxious,” Scott said.
Senior Jesse Grimes, 18, brought a bottle of soda and wasn’t disappointed.
Some of the soda was still
left in the bottle.“I’m going to drink the
rest of it during government class,” Grimes said.

GARDENER’S MAILBAG
BY NEIL SPERRY
Dear Neil: My hibiscus plants came back last year, but they were 9 feet tall. They’re coming back this year, and I don’t want them to get so lanky. Can they be pruned, and, if so, by how much?
It would really help to know what type of hibiscus you have. There are many, and 9 feet isn’t especially tall for many of them. You wouldn’t be able to prune hardy hibiscus (rose mal-lows) easily, as they produce unbranched shoots. Confed-erate rose and Texas star hibiscus are two other very strong growers. All hibis-cus need to be in full sun. If yours is in a good bit of shade, that might account for its lankiness. Moving it late next winter would be the solution. Pruning prob-ably won’t be.
Dear Neil: Some 17 years ago my wife transplanted bluebonnets onto a slope near our house. Now, after this spring, they have com-pletely disappeared. I plant-ed ryegrass on that slope 10 or 12 years ago to give some winter food to the deer. Could that have been the problem? If so, how do I kill the rye without harming the blue-bonnets?
In nature, bluebonnets grow in rather poor soils and challenging conditions. They do not compete at all well with vigorous grasses. Your best bet would be to fi nd a space where the rye could be killed with a glyphosate and where you could rototill the soil gently to a depth of an inch or two before sowing acid-treated seeds in late August or September.
Dear Neil: Attached is a photo of a double-fl owering
amaryllis. Is this uncom-mon?
It is uncommon. Your one fl ower is actually two (or more) fl owers pushed to-gether into one common bud and “fl ower.” It’s not really a desirable trait. Watch the plant to see if it repeats this next year and thereafter. It may just be a chance muta-tion.
Dear Neil: I am consid-ering capping the sprinkler heads that water older, well-established and drought-tol-erant plants like cacti, crape myrtles, hollies and other xeriscape plants. I have a 3-inch layer of cedar mulch around them. Would this be a mistake?
Why don’t you just run your sprinkler system less often? Or, you can install (or have a professional irrigator install) low-volume heads over those specifi c plants. That type of head delivers a fraction of the water that a standard head would de-liver in the same time.
Dear Neil: We used a weed-and-feed fertilizer for our St. Augustine lawn. It was sodded in October 2006, yet there are areas that just don’t grow well at all. It’s full of weeds. What can we do?
St. Augustine is a very as-sertive grass. The fact that it’s not vigorous after that long suggests either you’re
not using the right type of fertilizer, or that you are applying it at the wrong in-tervals. You want a high-ni-trogen food that has half or more of its nitrogen in slow-release form. Apply it in early April, early June and mid-September. Avoid mid-summer feedings to lessen the chance of gray leaf spot. Watch, too, for the other St. Augustine problems such as chinch bugs in sunny parts of the lawn during the sum-mer, also take all patch in late spring.
Dear Neil: Oxalis is tak-ing over my back yard. It should never be sold in nurseries. What can I use to eliminate it?
Use a broadleafed weed-killer spray containing 2,4-D. Include one or two drops of a liquid dishwashing de-tergent to hold the spray on the waxy leaves. It may take two or three treatments, but you can eliminate it. Kept in bounds, it’s a delightful pe-rennial.
Dear Neil: Our oleanders look terrible. Someone told me it is oleander leaf scorch, but I can’t fi nd anything about it. Any suggestions?
I did a quick Web search and the University of Cali-fornia at Davis has a re-cently updated report on it. It’s of bacterial origin, from an organism that is closely related to the one causing
Pierce’s disease in grapes.Symptoms described on theWeb site are leaves on oneor more branches yellow-ing and beginning to droop, then turning brown andeventually dying. The prob-lem spreads throughout theplant. The disease is spreadby insects, especially a groupknown as sharpshooters.Sadly, they report that thereis no effective remedy for it.

SAVVY SENIOR
Dear Savvy Senior,Can you give me some tips
on starting a walking pro-gram? I was recently diag-nosed with pre-diabetes and need to take better care of my-self but I hate to exercise. Any suggestions?
Sedentary and SixtyDear Sedentary,More than 20 years of re-
search has shown that walk-ing may be the perfect exer-cise to improve your health. It burns calories (about 100 for every mile you walk), builds endurance, enhances muscle tone and fl exibility, strength-ens bones and doesn’t pound your joints. It also helps pre-vent diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, de-pression and more. Here’s what you should know.
Get in StepWalking is not only good
for what ails you, it’s also easy to do, convenient (it can be done anytime, anywhere) and free. All you need is a good pair of shoes, comfort-able clothing and a little de-
sire. Here are some tips to help you get in step: ■ Getting started (see
www.thewalkingsite.com): Start out slow if you need to. For many people this means head out the door, walk for 10 minutes and walk back. Do it every day for a week. If that seems easy, add fi ve minutes to your walks next week and keep adding fi ve minutes un-til you are walking as long as you desire. It’s also a smart idea to start and fi nish your walk with a few simple warm up and cool down stretches. Stretching will make you feel better and help prevent inju-ry. (Note: If you have health concerns, talk with your doc-tor before starting a walking program.)■ How often and how long:
Any walking is better than none, but most fi tness ex-perts recommend walking about 30 minutes, fi ve days a week. Research has shown that the 30 minutes can be accumulated throughout the day (10 minutes here, 10 minutes there). Or, for opti-
mal health benefi ts aim for 10,000 steps per day, which is the equivalent of about fi ve miles. ■ How fast: The right
walking speed depends on your fi tness level. Ideally you should walk at a brisk pace that has you breathing heav-ily, but are still able to carry on a conversation.
MotivationStarting a walking pro-
gram takes initiative. Stick-ing with it takes commit-ment. Here are some tips to help you stay motivated: ■ Find a walking buddy:
They can provide motivation and support along with com-panionship and security.■ Use a pedometer: These
nifty little gadgets (available in athletic stores for about $20) measure how far you’ve walked in steps and miles, providing motivation by spurring you to meet a par-ticular goal and showing you if you’ve met it. ■ Keep a journal: Use it to
keep track of your walking minutes, steps or mileage
and total it up at the end of each week to see how you’re progressing. ■ Have a backup: If bad
weather, allergies or other factors limit your outdoor walking then have a backup plan like walking at your lo-cal mall, or consider buying a home treadmill or joining a health club. ■ Join a walking club: To
fi nd one in your community call your local medical center, mall, health clubs, YMCA, running shoe stores or area agency on aging to see if they sponsor or know of any clubs or groups. Or visit the American Volkssport Associ-ation at www.ava.org, which has a nationwide network of 350 non-competitive walking clubs and organizes more than 3,000 walking events each year.■ Listen to music: An iPod
(or portable CD, radio, MP3 or cassette player) can also make a nice walking com-panion. For some people mu-sic is a great motivator and can help pass the time. But be sure to keep the volume low enough so you can hear what is going on around you and use good judgment.■ Use the Web: AARP of-
fers a walking motivation program at aarp.stepupto-betterhealth.com, and a fun virtual walk along Route 66 at aarp.getfi tonroute66.com.■ Look for opportunities:
There are various ways you can add extra walking into your day such as taking the stairs instead of riding the elevator, when you go shop-ping or run errands, park further away from the busi-ness you’re visiting, or if it’s close enough walk.

ASSOCIATION
Getting older doesn’t have to mean suffering from depression. Many peo-ple fi nd their senior years full of ad-venture, excitement and a variety of joyful activities.
But all of us, especially as we age, will still experience sadness. Changes brought on by aging, such as reduced physical abilities, increasing health is-sues, or simply being more isolated, can all increase worry and sad feelings.
A common cause of sadness, espe-cially as we age, is the loss of someone dear to us, whether a spouse, a rela-tive or a close friend. The grief we ex-perience over such a loss is actually a natural, healthy response that helps us face the future.
But when that grieving process is unending it’s actually depression and can take all the enjoyment out of life and increase risk for numerous health problems.
Grieving becomes a problem when
it is unrelenting and keeps a person from enjoying a normal life. It’s not always an easy condition to recognize. There’s no clear timetable for how long grief should endure. For some people there may be a sad week or two, and for others it might take months to ac-cept the loss.
However, there are signs that indi-cate when grief has crossed over to de-pression. The most noticeable is that the grief seems to be unrelenting, re-fusing to diminish with the passage of time.
It’s also telling when all signs of joy in the person’s life seem to be gone. He or she can’t laugh at a funny joke, doesn’t brighten in response to a hug, and can’t appreciate the beautiful things around them, such as a pretty sunset.
Someone suffering from depression is often tired all the time, stops be-ing interested in friends and favorite activities, and may withdraw socially. Eating and sleeping problems are com-mon, and increased use of alcohol or
drugs can occur. If you, or someone close to you, has
experienced a strong loss and is begin-ning to exhibit signs of depression, it is important to get help quickly. De-pression can not only negatively affect health, but is a common cause of sui-cide.
There are a number of tests that can help pinpoint depression, and a vari-ety of methods for treating the prob-lem. A family physician or counseling professional can offer advice on how to approach the problem and make it better.
Depression is not a mental health is-sue that simply goes away or that will cure itself. Seek help quickly.

The month of May signals prom time and prom is the most excit-ing part of the school year for many students. It is also a time when students are look-ing forward to graduation, summer jobs and fun. Teens will have a lot on their minds and driving safely may not be at the top of the list. But the stakes are high because traffi c crashes are the leading cause of death for teens. In fact, get-ting into a car, pickup truck or SUV is the most dangerous thing that high school students do ev-
ery day because many of them fail to buckle up.
According to the Centers for Dis-ease Control, the risk of motor vehicle
crashes is higher among 16- to 19-year-olds than among any other age group. When combined with the fact that teens have the lowest rate of safety belt use compared with other age groups, this is great cause for concern. Among teens fatally injured in car crashes, more than half were not wearing their safety belts. Clearly, the most important thing to be wear-ing on prom night or any oth-
er time you are in the vehicle is your
safety belt. Prom should be a positive experi-
ence for a student, one that he or she will never forget. There is much talk about gowns, tuxedos, which groups will share a limousine, and of course, who will be the big date; however, the most important part of that talk should come from parents in explain-ing that prom night safety is crucial in the planning process. Parents need to emphasize safe driving and that alco-hol and drugs are not necessary for a fun evening.
There is no doubt that prom time can be a dangerous time for teens, but it does not have to be that way. Teens

If you are pregnant or the mother of a newborn, you may be relieved to hear that vivid dreams of babies in peril is a common phenomenon. Pregnant women who have such disturbing dreams often wake up crying, holding
their bellies, and acting out fears of delivery disasters. Among post-partum women, such dreams often compel them to check the infant or search for the baby under bed covers. These disruptive dreams among new mothers and mothers-to-be may be caused by the emotional infl uence of maternal
concerns. Severe sleep disruption, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation, and altered hormone levels may also play roles. Women who experience these dreams or other emotional concerns are advised to speak
candidly with their obstetricians.
At WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A, we provide comprehensive ob/gyn care. Each of our patients receives the highest level of care possible and we devote our complete attention and compassion to
keep you and your baby healthy and happy. To schedule your appointment for gynecology or obstetrical care, call 940-626-8008. Our offi ce is
conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are welcome.
Remember that it’s important to have an annual physical to prevent disease and it’s important to seek early prenatal care.
According to one study, about nine in ten pregnant women or mothers of newborns report dreaming vividly or having nightmares about their babies.

Pecan nut casebearer moths will soon be laying eggs in area orchards. The casebearer is the number one in-sect threat to pecan produc-tion in Texas.
This nut feeder can account for total crop losses some years on unsprayed trees.
However, with proper tim-ing of labeled insecticides, eco-nomic loss can be minimized.
Timing is crucial for effec-tive control. The suggested spray dates for Wise County are usually the last week of May.
However, the only way to know for sure is to check individual trees beginning in mid May.
The casebearer larvae cause the damage by feeding inside the develop-ing nutlet from late April thru June.
A single larva can destroy an entire cluster of nutlets.
The adult casebearer is a gray moth about 1/3 inch long with a ridge of dark scales running across the forewings.
They are active only at night. Most eggs are found on the nutlet tips.
They are greenish-white at fi rst and
change to pink or red before they hatch. The eggs hatch in four to fi ve days; the young larvae crawl to nearby buds to begin feeding.
After feeding for a day or two on a bud, the tiny larvae enter the nut.
They may feed for three to four weeks depending on the temperature.
The larvae are olive gray and reach a length of 1 inch.
Full grown larvae pupate in the pecan nut; adult moths emerge about nine-14 days later.
To determine whether to spray or not, examine nuts carefully for eggs.
Apply insecticides within two to three days after the
fi rst eggs hatch. Peak egg lay in our area often occurs during a two-week period in mid to late May.
Spring temperatures do infl uence casebearer development: cool, rainy weather like we experienced last week can delay moth activity and egg lay-ing.
There are several approved insecti-cides. Dipel, Sevin, Confi rm and Mal-athion are just a sampling of those available to homeowners or commer-cial growers.
Some products do carry restrictions, so be sure to read and follow the direc-tions on the label before spraying.
For daily updates on spray predic-tions go to the Web site: http://pecan-kernel.tamu.edu and look at the “Pe-can Nut Casebearer Detection Map - May 2008”.
This spring for the fi rst time there is a second PNC prediction site http://pncforecast.tamu.edu where a produc-er can make his/her own prediction us-ing their own trap data.
In addition to trap data this site also utilizes temperature data to generate predictions.
At the home page of this site produc-ers can fi nd information on PNC biolo-gy, damage, management, make a fore-cast, view other forecasts, a link to the “pecankernel” Web site and a link to the Texas A&M Entomology Web site.
To make a prediction click on Make a Forecast and log in and follow the di-rections.
For each county there will be a weather data source in a drop down menu.
Predictions that will be generated will include 10, 25, 50, 75 and 90 per-cent completion dates for oviposition (egg lay) and a predicted date for fi rst nut entry.
CLAYTON’S CORNER
need to know that not drinking and driving and wearing safety belts is the most effective way to protect them-selves from injury or death in a vehicle crash.
The month of May also means that law enforcement offi cers across the state will be extra vigilant in enforc-ing safety belt usage laws. But no law enforcement offi cer wants to be the one to arrive at the scene of a crash to see the life of a teen ruined when tragedy could have so easily been prevented.
Keep your teen safe. Make sure there will be no alcohol involved on prom night, and be sure your teen wears the right thing to and from the prom, a safety belt.
Parent Prom Tips■ On prom night, demand that alco-
hol not be allowed. ■ Limit the number of passengers
your teen will be allowed to transport. ■ Insist that everyone in the vehicle
wear seat belts at all times. ■ Don’t allow driving after mid-
night. Make alternative arrangements
(chauffeur, car pool with other parents, taxis) if necessary. ■ If renting a limo, parents and pas-
sengers should sign a contract allowing the driver to phone parents if alcohol is detected. Insist that only registered passengers be allowed transportation. ■ Be sure your teen provides contact
phone numbers where he or she can be reached.

There is so much going on in the outdoors this time of year that I thought we would do a ‘smorgasbord’ column this week to help you decide the activity that best suits your schedule and interests. We’ll cover several activities and give you con-tacts for folks that can help put you in the action.
Float a riverJohn Bryan is in charge
of the hunting and fi shing on the Holt River Ranch in Palo Pinto County. John guides anglers on several miles of the Brazos River that join the ranch. Fishing has been excellent for native black bass, spotted bass and catfi sh. This is the Post Oak Bend area of the Brazos and the scenery is breathtaking with sheer rock cliffs and secluded valleys. It’s a great place to fl oat in a canoe or small boat but access to the river is limited. Paddlers that wish to do self-guided fl oat trips should study maps of the section of river they plan to fl oat and have pre-determined spots to put in and take out. On rivers such as the Brazos, it’s often necessary to fl oat several miles to highways where ac-cess to the waterway is al-lowed. For information on fi shing this section of the Brazos, give Bryan a call at (940) 452-3415 or go online to www.holtriverranch.com
Bream on bedsAbout this time every year,
bream go into their annual spawn and the action is of-ten nonstop for these feisty little scrappers. Finding a good spot to fi sh for bream is easy. They are in just about every municipal pond, lake and river in the coun-try. Bream (sunfi sh) is the perfect fi sh to introduce new anglers to fi shing, but veter-an fl y fi shermen also target
them with downsized pop-ping bugs. An inexpensive spin cast rod, a few earth-worms or even bits of biscuit dough, a fl oater, weights and a long shank bream hook is all it takes to introduce a kid to fi shing. Finding nesting bream is easy. Look for oval shaped, fanned out areas in water two to four feet deep. Find a spot where bream are nesting and it’s common to catch several from the same area. The trick is to stay a long cast away from the fi sh, cast past them, then crank the bait up to their nest-ing area. Bream, although small, are excellent eating. I grew up eating them with heads removed, scaled and
fried bones and all. These days, I use a small fi llet knife and remove the fi llets, eliminating the problem of small bones.
Turkey season still under way
Many hunters target gob-blers during the fi rst couple weeks of the season, but late season hunts can be re-warding. The theory is that many of the hens are now on nests and the gobblers have to stay on the move in search of mates. I’ve been disappointed on early sea-son hunts when gobblers were with fl ocks of receptive hens. It’s tough to call a ma-ture gobbler away from the very thing he’s seeking: the
companionship of hens! The next couple weeks should provide some excellent tur-key hunting. Calling in a gobbler during the spring season is most defi nitely one of the most exciting endeavors in the outdoors. I’ve hunted turkeys for a quarter-century and no two hunts have ever unfolded exactly the same. My good friend and frequent hunting companion, outdoors writer Bob Hood, has probably har-vested more wild turkeys than anyone I know. Bob has a saying, “patience kills more gobblers than any-thing.” He is alluding to the fact that if you know you’re in an areas frequented by turkeys, stay put and give the bird time to come to you. On many past occasions, I can remember becoming im-patient and spooking birds that might have come to my calling, had I only stayed put and waited them out. Sometimes, though, mov-ing around a bit can help you bag your bird. If you’re getting a gobbler to respond to your calling but he’s not coming in, try changing lo-cations and resume your calling. Turkeys have the ability to lock in on the ori-gin of sounds and a caller on the move makes the gobbler think the receptive hen is on the move. He will often close the distance and come strut-ting within shotgun range!
Spring squirrel seasonIn many areas, squirrels
can be hunted year-round but in the east Texas coun-ties, there’s a special spring season (May 1-31). The woods are full of ‘fryer’ squir-rels in May. Young born back in the winter are reaching maturity and provide great sport and excellent eating for hunters wishing for one
more opportunity to take to the woods. Squirrel hunt-ing is not nearly as popular is it was 30 or 40 years ago. Hunting big game such as the white-tailed deer domi-
nates the calendar of themajority of hunters. Squir-rels can be taken with ashotgun or rifl e. An accurate

semi-auto .22 with a quality scope, to my way of thinking, is the ultimate challenge for the rifl eman. The red or ‘fox’ squirrel will sit tight a little better than its cousin the grey or ‘cat’ squirrel. Al-though many squirrels have been taken by hunters wear-ing blue jeans and checkered shirts in years past, good camo defi nitely increases the chances of getting close to these wary little critters. Pick a spot where you see fresh ‘cuttings’ (chewed piec-es of new growth limbs), sit tight and wait for the squir-rels to begin feeding. Early morning is best for hunting grey squirrels but fox squir-rels often feed during mid morning.
Catfi sh moving to deeper water
Catfi sh are just beginning to bite over holes baited with soured grain. A coffee can of soured grain or cattle range cubes distributed un-der the boat is a good way to concentrate whiskerfi sh. Savvy anglers choose the waters around the edge of isolated trees, often close to submerged creek or riv-er channels, to distribute grain, and they often bait the same areas throughout the warm weather months. Catfi sh will hit many type of baits but Magic Baits (www.magicbait.com) produces a variety of catfi sh catching baits that are easy to fi sh with and highly effective.
Hopefully, one or more of these activities will spark you to get out and enjoy the outdoors. As you can see, there’s lots going on right now!

Thistles are not popular plants. Having been poked myself occasionally, I can understand why. But there are advantages to these prickly plants.
First, many butterfl ies, skippers and beetles en-joy the nectar of the pink fl owers. Also, in northern regions, goldfi nches use thistle-down for their nests and wait for late summer to nest so that this choice ma-terial will be available. My favorite thing about thistles, however, is the fun fl uffi ness of thistle-down. It fl oats so airily through the sky!
We don’t have nesting goldfi nches here, but I al-ways enjoy the plethora of insects visiting the fl ow-ers. Many skippers, such as Sachems and Fiery Skip-pers, and butterfl ies such as Painted Ladies, American Ladies, and swallowtails en-joy the fl owers. I have also seen many small- to medi-um-sized beetles of various colors and patterns visiting thistles.
We have several types of thistle here, all of which are beginning to grow; some have started to bloom al-ready. Thistles are a mem-ber of the family Astera-ceae, which also includes sunfl owers, daisies, asters and goldenrods. According to Shinners and Mahler’s Illustrated Flora of North-Central Texas, various spe-cies of thistle can be found blooming here from May to September. I have already seen a few blooming in the past week.
The most common native thistle in our area is Texas Thistle (Cirsium texanum). It is a biennial or perennial and can grow from 2-6 feet
tall. In addition to the nec-tar providing butterfl y food and birds eating the seeds, I have also read that deer will eat the buds and turkeys will eat the seeds. If it hasn’t sprouted its prickly beauty in an inconvenient place, it’s really a delightful fl ower to have around. In addition to the Texas Thistle, there are several other similar native species in our area.
However, not all our this-tles are so benefi cial. We have two species of invasive thistle that can crowd out
our local grasses and wild-fl owers. These are Musk-Thistle (Carduus nutans, also called Nodding-Thistle), from the Mediterranean and Scotch-Thistle (Onopordum acanthium) from Eurasia.
Musk-Thistle is an an-nual or biennial plant that grows from 2-9 feet tall. Ac-cording to the Shinners and Mahler’s Illustrated Flora of North-Central Texas, it was introduced into Texas in the late 1930s. However, it has been found in the United States since the mid-1800s.
This Web site (http://bc-4weeds.tamu.edu/weeds/rangeland/muskthistle.html ) has more information on this species. This species has a very broad, fl at fl ower head, as opposed to the pine-apple-shaped fl ower head of the Texas Thistle and other native species.
Like Musk-Thistle, Scotch-Thistle was also imported to Texas in the late 1930s. It can be distinguished from the native species by its very large, broad leaves. Both this and Musk-Thistle also have more spines on their stems than the native species, al-though on Scotch-Thistle the broad leaves can some-times hide the prickles.
These two non-native plants can out-compete our local plants and form large prickly stands. They are considered noxious weeds in several states. If you want to remove them, you can dig them out or spray them. The Web site I mentioned above also has information on controlling them. The key is to get them before they spread their thousands and thousands of seeds in the fall. These invasive thistles can quickly take over a fi eld if not stopped at an early stage.
The non-native, invasive thistles can give the group a bad name. Enjoy our native species for their pretty pink fl owers and the butterfl ies they attract; just watch out for those thorns!

WHEN ARE TICK BITES A PROBLEM?
If a tick attaches itself to your child, do
not panic. Instead, remember these
important steps. Remove the tick with
needle-nosed tweezers, making sure to
pull straight out. Be sure not to wiggle or
twist the tweezers during the process.
Kill the tick with alcohol (not petroleum
jelly), and wash the tick bite area well
with soap and water. Wash hands, and
wipe alcohol on the bite area. Contact a
pediatrician if the child still has some tick
on the skin, develops a rash, or had the
tick embedded for more than 24 hours.
Watch the bitten area carefully for any
signs of infection. Fever, headache, and
muscle aches are indications that the
tick bite is making a child sick.

ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, May 1, 2008 19
conduct their home search. This is defi nitely not the way our parents and grandpar-ents looked for a property. I see this as a positive thing. It saves everyone a great deal of time and makes the house-hunting experience much more effi cient for the homebuyer.
Got a question? There are so many fantas-
tic real estate Web sites out there, many of which have valuable, readily available data and lots of it. I’m not just talking about searching homes for sale. You can es-timate the value of a house, research demographics, as-sess schools, learn about communities and even get satellite imagery of a neigh-borhood or a house. The best part? Most of these services are free!
In addition to what we might call “standard” real estate Web sites, there has been a proliferation of real estate-related blogs. Blogs are a great source of infor-mation—places where you can ask questions, interact with experts and fi nd data that’s already been deci-phered and analyzed. And bloggers will engage almost anyone about almost any-thing. Want to know where the best hamburger or pizza in your new town is? How about the return on invest-ment for stainless steel kitchen appliances when re-modeling or selling a home?
Don’t believe every-thing you read
It’s not just trade-specifi c sites that affect the indus-try. National news media are obsessed with doom-and-gloom real estate right now. There’s certainly no short-age of negative publicity about the industry: stories about foreclosures, resetting ARMs and real estate’s ties to the national economy are widespread. Bad news sells, and the national outlets’ content refl ects it. This is especially true on Web sites – there are no true space
constraints, authors are not confi ned to traditional publication schedules and deadlines and readers have the ability to post their com-ments on stories.
Know the source With all these streams
of information, there’s no question that anyone, es-pecially someone who’s not in the real estate industry, could easily suffer from in-formation overload. What’s the worst part of that? A lot of that information is extra-neous, erroneous or simply invalid in our market.
As a buyer, seller or hom-eowner, you may fi nd it hard to know who to trust. Much of the information on the Internet is written authori-tatively and wrapped in a pretty package, which lends instant credibility, some-times without good reason. So what’s true? What do you really need to know? As a trusted adviser, a Texas Realtor can help you navi-gate the modern real estate transaction, sift through all the data and arrive at good decisions.
The industry has changed, but ultimately, the job of a Realtor is the same: to help you with the process of buy-ing or selling a home. It’s what we do. The Internet has added a new dimension to the real estate world and it’s made many aspects of the real estate transaction easier, quicker and more transparent. More data and solid research make for a more involved and informed buyer, which are positive consequences of today’s In-ternet-based real estate tools. Be aware, though, that all that available infor-mation has added a level of complexity to the process as well.
Trust a Texas Realtor to help you when you’re buy-ing or selling a home, espe-cially these days. For more information about buying or selling real estate in Texas, I invite you to visit TexasRe-alEstate.com.
