our hearts and our neighbors as
ourselves. Our life centers on the
Eucharist and the sacramental
life of the Church. From these
encounters we seek to be Christ's

the world. We warmly welcome
visitors and seekers and anyone
who is curious about faith,
Church and God; we rejoice in the
Lord when returning brothers and
sisters join us at Table.

REFLECTION
How ‘Bout a Little Mercy, Your Honor
By Deacon John Burkly
As a young lawyer I handled my fair share of
criminal cases. Lawyers might call them small cases.
That would be fair. Very few of these cases ever
were reported in any media outlet. Very few cases
are.
They may not have been big cases in terms of
media coverage...but I guarantee you they were big
cases to the people involved ; to the defendant and his/
her family and friends ...and most assuredly to the
victim or victims and their families and friends.
Back then the word justice fell easily from my
lips and those of opposing counsel. We each were
advocating a position and would frankly invoke that
word justice as it suited us in a given case.
That term justice we hoped would indicate to a
judge that there was something that the client deserved
or was entitled, a right, a view of the burden in a case,
the benefit of the doubt, or at least an argument could
be made that the justice system somehow would fail
if our version of justice was not adopted by the Court.
On occasion..... I would ask the court not for
justice...not what the defendant deserved.... but for
mercy.
A request for mercy is an admission of sorts that
I do not have any right or perceived right. A plea for
mercy generally says I have nothing to offer.
I ask not that you give me what I deserve.....I ask
you rather that you see life through my eyes and give
me that second third or fourth chance. And the
likelihood of receiving mercy would begin to dissolve if
it was a third, fourth, or fifth chance being sought.
A plea for mercy might well fall on deaf ears as
it was pointed out to the Court that the defendant here
showed little mercy for his/her victims. Human mercy
seems to have a balance, hence, the scales of justice.
Human mercy, societal mercy, the mercy a
Court can show a person has limits. The mercy we think
we can show each other as well might seem to have
limits. But, does it have to?
This weekend my friends, we celebrate Divine
Mercy Sunday.
The Good news for you and me?
God does not perform a balancing act. God
does not ponder whether or not He will show us
mercy. He does not take a look at our sometimes long
record of sin and conclude that ....we are lost to our
sins.
The Mercy of God is the patience of God...He
waits patiently for you and me. It is often not a straight
path from our wanting to be closer to Jesus and our
being closer to Jesus. His love attracts us. We come
towards Him and it feels so right!!!
But, we slip and stumble in our human ways
and grow further from Him. He does not become
frustrated by our missteps...we do....we get frustrated
from trying...we are the ones who give up....He never
gives up on us.
Our Holy Father Francis has repeatedly said that
it is through the showing of Mercy that we can most
closely imitate Our Lord Jesus.
And it was Jesus Himself who taught about the
Father’s mercy...the Father’s way.... God’s way is a
shower of mercy...a deluge of mercy...unlimited mercy.
Have you ever considered God's patience with
you, the patience He has with each one of us? That is
His mercy.
Friends don’t put human limits on God’s mercy.
It is so much more generous than we can conceive.

Weekend *Date Due*
• May 11th/12th Thursday, May 2nd
• May 18th/19th Thursday, May 9th
Questions of the Week:
1.) In Acts, Luke records many of the "signs and
wonders" performed by the Apostles in Jerusalem in the
aftermath of Jesus' resurrection. Where do you see
miraculous events occurring today in your faith
community?
2.) Today, we hear of one of the early visions of the
resurrected Jesus that John received while exiled on the
island of Patmos. What do you see as the main message
Jesus was communicating to John in this initial vision?
3.) The "doubting Thomas" resurrection narrative is one
of the best-known Gospel stories surrounding Jesus'
resurrection appearances. What role does doubt play in
your spiritual journey?
Living the Liturgy This Week:
Peace be with you! Of all of the things the resurrected
Christ could have said, he chose this: Peace be with
you! These calming words lessened the disciples'
anxiety and gave them a wonderful sense of
reassurance. Words have the power to do that. Jesus
touches his friends with his breath and breathes his
Spirit upon them. This intimate gesture of peace begins
to alleviate the uncertainty and fear that no doubt
consumed their thoughts and hearts. Words and
gestures are so important in doing God's work. Even the
simplest of greetings and actions can profoundly move
people and direct them to God. On this Sunday of
Divine Mercy, we are reminded that God's all-forgiving
and merciful love comes to us through the risen Christ.
By our words and actions, may we show that
forgiveness and merciful love to others.

DEEPEN YOUR FAITH
Sunday, Apr 28, 2019 SOLEMNITY OF THE SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER; DIVINE
MERCY SUNDAY
Mercy is as mercy does A chilling scene in the movie Schindler’s List involves a Nazi commander playacting with the godlike power of absolution. Standing before a mirror, he raises his hand in a gesture of blessing and says, “I pardon you.” Then he smiles at his reflection, impressed by the look of benevolence. Genuine mercy, of course, isn’t something we grant ourselves, nor is it a superficial style to be admired. It’s not a softness in the heart or a welling in the eyes when we see suffering. Mercy is real when it reaches out from thought to deed, from emotion to action. Let others judge if we are merciful.
Monday, Apr 29, 2019 MEMORIAL OF CATHERINE OF SIENA, VIRGIN & DOCTOR OF
THE CHURCH
Read between the holy lines Saint Catherine of Siena had trouble learning to read—and didn't learn to write until she was an adult. And yet, before her death at the young age of 33, she became one of the most influential writers in Catholic history. Because of the significance of her theological writings, she is one of only four women named a doctor of the church. Few of us are destined for such greatness, but when you feel frustrated with your limitations and the progress of your life, remember that all things are possible with God, and be open to what God has planned for you on God’s time schedule, not yours.
Tuesday, Apr 30, 2019MEMORIAL OF PIUS V, POPE
Remember an artful pope Saint Pius V, a 16th-century pope, is said to have been a patron of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, a prolific religious composer who wrote no fewer than 105 Masses along with dozens of hymns, magnificats, litanies, and lamentations. In earlier centuries, the Catholic Church was the principal patron of the fine arts. The investment was worth it, as the church’s sponsorship fostered the creation of countless musical treasures. Encourage your own parish or diocese to carry on the tradition and be a benefactor of the arts. Great art sheds light on the beauty and mystery of God’s creation.
Wednesday, May 1, 2019 MEMORIAL OF JOSEPH THE WORKER
In praise of brotherly love Today we’re invited to celebrate the gift of Catholic brothers, a group that—like Saint Joseph, whose feast day we also celebrate today—tends not to be flashy or well publicized. But religious brothers are good examples of what every Christian is called to: faithfulness in community. Brothers can be found living and ministering together in many ways, from education to social service to art. On this Religious Brothers Day, let’s thank all brothers in religious life for their service and ask ourselves what action rooted in faithfulness we might perform today.
Thursday, May 2, 2019 MEMORIAL OF ATHANASIUS, BISHOP & DOCTOR OF THE
CHURCH
A beautiful mind The life of Saint Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria in Egypt, reflects the frequent turmoil in the early church. As an assistant to his predecessor, he attended the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. After becoming bishop himself he embarked on a nearly lifelong struggle against the then-powerful Arian heresy. In a span of 30 years he was exiled no fewer than five times—to Germany, Rome, and in hiding near Alexandria—before establishing his authority for good and defeating Arianism, which denied the Trinity. Because the weapons in these kinds of conflicts were theological as well as political, a bishop had to have a fine theological mind, as Athanasius did. Though our disputes are different today, thoughtful argument is always in order.
Friday, May 3, 2019 FEAT OF PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES
A man of mystery Philip we know. He’s mentioned several times in the gospels, usually coming up with the wrong answer to a question from Jesus. But James, son of Alpheus, is more the mystery man. Although he appears number nine in all three lists of the apostles, details of his life are unknown. Like most of us, he moved through his life in relative obscurity. Yet something about him drew the attention of Jesus and got his name on the list. What is there about you that would include your name among those of the Lord’s followers?
Saturday, May 4, 2019 EASTER WEEKDAY
Community with a capital "C" The church is built on community. Together, the people of God welcome new members in Baptism, come together to be fed in the Eucharist, and witness faith proclaimed at Confirmation. Such community nurtures, supports, and affirms the universality and unity of church. When gathering around the table to celebrate, give thanks, and worship, it is helpful from time to time to look and see those around us. Who isn’t present? Who isn’t being served at the table? Who have I shut out? Our call is to spread the Good News . . . and sometimes the greatest news is that all are welcome.
