Brief Overview

• Britain gave Iraq independence in 1932– Military occupation ended in 1947

• 1947 the Hashmite monarchy was instated

• Coup d’etat of the Baathist group took control in 1963

• Saddam Hussein rose to power during the Socialist movement

• Pres Bush Sr. declared war during the Gulf War

From the Beginning

• Iraq was given its independence from Britain in 1932

• The Hashmite monarchy ruled until 1958 until it was overthrown by a coup

• The leader, Abdul Qassim, withdrew from the Baghdad Pact and became friendly with the Soviet Union

• The US and Soviet Union did not have good relations at this point so the United States was not on good terms with Iraq at this time
