DUVET

French Duvet (down)  It consists of a soft flat

bag filled with down, feathers, wool, silk or a synthetic alternative and protected with a removable cover, analogous to a pillow and pillow case. Duvets originated in rural Europe and were made from the down feathers of the eider duck, known for its usefulness as a thermal insulator.

THROW PILLOW  Throw pillows serve both

an aesthetic and a functional purpose. Decorative pillows are commonly used to tie in color accents within a room, often drawing on the colors in drapes, walls or area rugs. From a functional perspective, throw pillows may provide back, neck and head support, although many throw pillows are very uncomfortable.

Standard SHAMS

A standard sham is for a bed pillow and adds decor and pillow design to the bed. There are also Euro shams. They are square and square sham pillows inserts are available for them as well. These are not meant to be slept on at night and are in addition to your regular sleep pillows. They are just pillow candy. They dress the bed when it is made up and adds an upscale design look to your bed. I have both standard and Euro shams on my bed as well as decorative pillows. It's a great look.

European Shams

The European Sham is the pillow covering for a large square pillow that typically measures 26x26. This is the first layer against the headboard, then you arrange your Standard/Queen shams (20x26) or King size shams (20x36). In front of that you place your smaller accent pillows.

This layering effect with different sizes and shapes and patterns is how to design a luxurious, inviting bedding ensemble!

Bed Pad (Mattress Pad)

Page 28: All About Housekeeping

MATTRESS PAD

A mattress pad is designed to lie atop an existing mattress. Made primarily from foam, its function is to provide a layer of comfort and warmth between the user and the mattress. It is of particular benefit when the existing mattress is worn or uncomfortable. Toppers quite often have a contoured profile to facilitate airflow. Visco-elastic foam toppers are regularly used in medical institutions because of their pressure relieving properties. The foam used in the construction of these memory foam toppers reacts to both pressure and temperature. This, combined with its greater density, are properties that give them their characteristic "weightlessness" sensation.

Making the BED

Bed making may appear simple by domestic standards, but requires technical expertise in a hotel because of the sheer volume of beds to be made in a given shift.

Evening Service

Most of the room cleaning would have been done in the morning and afternoon shift. The exception would be the rooms with a “Do-not-Disturb” sign. Such rooms are normally occupied by late night/early morning arrivals, especially crews. All occupied rooms, however, require an evening turn-down service to prepare the room for the night.

Page 35: All About Housekeeping

The R.A (room attendant) -will follow the procedure given below 1. knock and enter the room as per

procedure given before. 2. Put all light switches on, to check that

they are working. 3. Draw heavy curtains to give privacy to

guests at night. 4. Hang loose guest clothes in the wardrobe. 5. Take off bed cover, fold it neatly and store

it n the wardrobe in the top or lower shelf.
