President’s MessageAs we look back on the close of the Art League’s Fall 2014 season, what did you unfortunately miss? One of the 3 fantastic shows/exhibits? Our first lecture on the paintings of Mary Ann Carroll, the first lady of the Florida Highwaymen? One of the many classes and workshops offered? a trip to the musical, The Book of Mormon? the book review of Cutting for Stone???Well, you can make up for the loss by taking advantage of what 2015 has to offer by taking part in any of the 8 upcoming shows, 2 lec-tures whose speakers are from the Smithsonian and the Metropoli-tan Museum of Art, several of the 34+ workshops, 3+ trips, 4 book reviews, 4 Orchid Club meetings, 4 Point and Shoot Club gatherings, and the many weekly classes too numerous to count.Too much to take in? Make sure you are signed up for our e-blasts so that you can stay on top of the many offerings and events with the weekly alerts - but beware, inquire early for our trips and workshops which sometimes sell out.So, whether it is to reach out and take a chance at your creativity, or show up at the “place to be” for an opening reception of an exhibit, stop by the Art League in the up-coming months, you will not be disappointed. Karen waite President
executive director’s Message
Your Art League is a very special place and different from most any other Art Center. We strive to make all of our members feel comfortable and getting all of the attention that they deserve from our instruc-tors and staff. We vow to keep our classes and workshops smaller than most any other place so that we
achieve the best results and provide the best experience that we possibly can. The new year is in full swing. Classes and workshops are filling quickly so I would encourage all members to stop by, email us or give us a call to discuss all the pos-sibilities available to jump into. The exhibits thus far have been su-perb and we have so many more to look forward to. The Opening Re-ceptions have grown to be an event not to be missed. Fantastic artwork, great food, spirits and friendships round out every opening. Please do not hesitate to join us and join the fun!sherri harris Executive Director

New trip! “noises off” Friday, march 27
Coach departs the Art League at 5:15 pm and returns by 10:15 pm
$125 Member | $165 Non-Member
Join us for a pre-theater dinner at Sundowners and then off to the Murray Nelson Commu-nity and Cultural Center in Key Largo to en-joy enjoy the dizziest, funniest, backstage farce ever written, Noises Off. Noises Off careens us through the roller coaster lives of a hapless troupe of provincial actors as they go through the motions of a cringe-worthy comedy known as Nothing On. In a brilliant turnabout of door slamming miscues, misdirections, and misun-derstandings, onstage romantic intriguers are foiled by bunglers and burglars, while the play-ers backstage exhibit their best follies and worst foibles spinning the play toward a hysterical climax. The theater world turns with side-split-ting results to reveal mystery and mayhem as the cast and crew pull out all the stops to keep track of newspapers and cactuses, former and future lovers, missing cast mates, and the odd sardine.

Paint in any medium! Finding inspiration involves looking at the world around with fresh eyes. Generation means generating the skills an artist needs to mold their in-spiration into a visual entity that sparks an emotional response. Discovery is the mode that takes the artist along a satisfying jour-ney towards creative growth; whether it’s abstract, representational, impressionism or personally expressive. Maggie seeks to give her artists the gift of creative growth and/or renewal, personal expansion, free-dom of self-discovery and the ability to break new ground technically and picto-rially. Her love for painting and and art spills contagiously over to her students.

The Coming Storm: The Civil War and american art
CO-SPONSORED BY THE CAMPUS AT THE CULTURAL CENTER
Eleanor Jones Harvey, Speakermonday, January 26, 4:30 pm
at the cultural centerBook signing and wine and cheese
reception immediately follows.
This lecture ex-amines the im-pact of the Civil War on Ameri-can art, looking to photography and genre paint-ing as a way of understanding the human cost
of war, and landscapes as an emotional ba-rometer for the nation’s psyche during this turbulent period. Many American artists chose not to depict the graphic horrors of the Civil War, finding little enthusiasm for painting this internal conflict. However, the use of nature metaphors to describe the effects of the combat without actually describing it draws a close link between the landscape paintings and literature of the moment.
Dr. Harvey grounds her discussion in the voices of the period: the poems, speeches, sermons, and letters written by leading literary figures and by common men and women who, like the artists, endured the conflict at first hand.about the speaker: Eleanor Jones Harvey is se-nior curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She earned her Ph.D. in the history of art from Yale University and has authored and co-authored several books based on her dissertation. Her most recent project was the widely-praised ex-hibition The Civil War and American Art, which was on view at the Smithsonian in 2012-2013 and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in the summer of 2013. Her accompanying book won the Southeastern Book Festival Award for Best Art or Photography Book for 2012.
not Just Winging It: The extraordinary artistic Practices

immediately follows.
Invariably writ-ten about as a naturalist, field observer, and American back-w o o d s m a n , this presenta-tion will focus on John James Audubon as an artist. His bril-liant represen-
tations of birds – subjects that would not stay still and demanded ingenious meth-ods to portray realistically, required that he overcome multiple challenges extend-ing from finding makeshift studios, inven-tive apparatus, an innovative use of paints and papers, occasional assistants and not least his extended journeys away from his beloved family.about the speaker: Marjorie Shelley has been the Sherman Fairchild Conservator in Charge of Paper and Photograph Conservation at the Metro-politan Museum of Art since 2001. She oversees the conservation, exhibition and preservation activi-ties of the Museum’s vast collection of works, which includes the drawings of John James Audubon. Her writings include Drawings Birds, published in “Audubon’s Aviary” by the New-York Historical Society in 2012. She has organized many schol-arly forums and study days and is an advisor for a number of American and international museums.
She holds a MA degree in art history from New York University Institute of Fine Art, and a degree from the NYU Conservation Center. She is a recip-ient of a Rome Prize and a Hermitage Fellowship.
The apple Lover’s CookbookMary Anne Smith, Facilitator
Thursday, march 12 4:00 pm at the Art League
This Art League event will surely crunch to the top of your list of apples of your eye by the way of The Apples Lover’s Cookbook by Amy Traverso.
Come and contribute to savory conversations and bring your favorite apple memories!
Granny Smith will be present and charm attendees with as-American-as-apple pie, tarts and buckles.
Did you know that by 500 B.C apples had found a place of honor
in Persian culture and cuisine?
25% of an apple’s volume is air; that is why they can float.
The first apple trees in America were planted by Pilgrims in Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Apples are a member of the rose family of plants along with pears, peaches,
plums and cherries.
It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider and two pounds of
apples to make one 9-inch pie.

Proof of Heaven by dr. eben alexander
Thursday, January 15, 4:00 pmDr. Robert Henley, reviewer
Thousands of people have had near death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists until his own brain was attacked by a
rare illness. While his body lay in a coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and met and spoke with the divine source of the universe itself.
We are Water by Wally LambThursday, February 19, 4:00 pm
Mary Zwirn, reviewer
After 27 years of mar-riage and three children, Anna Oh, wife, mother and outsider artist, has fallen in love with Viveca, the wealthy Manhattan art dealer who orchestrated her
success. They plan to wed and the wedding provokes some very mixed reactions and opens up a Pandora’s Box of toxic secrets. We Are Water is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, chang-ing social mores, the legacy of racial vio-lence and the nature of creativity and art.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca SklootThursday, march 19, 4:00 pm
Dr. Suzanne Romeo, reviewer
Henrietta Lacks was a poor black tobacco farmer. Her cells, taken without her knowledge in 1951, became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio
vaccine, cloning, gene mapping and more. Yet she remains virtually unknown and her family can not afford health insurance.
This New York Times best seller tells a riveting story of ethics, race and medicine and of a daughter consumed with questions about a mother she never knew.
The old Man and the Sea by ernest Hemingway
Thursday, April 16, 4:00 pmSteven Kaplan, reviewer
We will complete this season with this timeless classic by one of the greats of American letters. Hemingway, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature and the Pulitzer for this
very book, tells the seemingly simple story of a man who refuses to be beaten in an epic battle with the great fish. But it is much more than a story of fishing. Here Hemingway recasts the timeless story of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph in the face of loss. Told in language of great simplicity and power, this is Hemingway at his best.
