Chairman's Chat

Hello fellow CMA’ers, supporters and enthusiasts,

It only seems like a couple of weeks ago since I wrote my first piece for the newsletter. Doesn’t time fly when you’re busy and it certainly has been a busy last couple of months?

We had the National Run in Tasmania in early October and what great experience that was; our brethren in Tasmanian sure know how to put on a great event. It was a great time had by all, even Colin whom you might suppose had reason to feel a bit sad due to a bit of an off on the Saturday ride. But by the grace of God Colin came off

relatively unharmed (just a few bruises and strains), the ditch was full of bushes and grass and provided a good landing. However the same couldn’t be said for his beloved BMW R60/5 (I believe it will live again after some TLC and a lot of elbow grease). A big thank you to all those who at-tended to both Colin and his bike, it was inspiring to see everyone come together to help him out. “All things work together for good for those who love the Lord.” and Colin

certainly has the right attitude by counting his blessings and his problems.

We had a great church visit to South West Christian Church (SWCC) in Hopper Crossing on 17

th November. What a great job Peter and Colin

did in representing CMA and our Bike for Pastors program. We received a generous love offering from the members of SWCC which will go a long way in funding the purchase of bikes for our next project. Thanks to all those who came and supported us on the SWCC visit, your presence was a great encouragement and had a great Impact on all who attended the service. If you haven’t managed to attend a CMA church visitation I would encourage you to do so. It’s not just a great expression of support for CMA and the church visitation & bikes for pastors teams but it’s a great experience.

Sadly there have been some members who have been doing it tough lately, either through personal illness or illness in the family. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

Take comfort in God’s promise in Isaiah “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

(Isa. 43:2, NIV).

I would like to encourage everyone to be vigilant in prayer for their brothers and sisters in Christ as well as for those whom you may usually pray for. Remember “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7, NIV).

Until next time, stay safe, ride safe, stay upright and may the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Keep on riding for the Son,

Greg

TASSIE National Run

Tassie National Run Oct ’12 My CMA involvement began with the Teaching Weekend at Kyabram Victoria in mid ’06. Here I first met some of the Victorian CMA family. In the Nov of ’06, I went to my first National Run which happened to be in Tassie. It was a fantastic time, and while there I realized what a large family CMA really was. Of course meeting up with the Dublin CMA crew in Ireland in ’09 only reinforced this perspective. Gordon McPhee, Andrea Ramsay and I got a rudimentary group together from Sth Gippsland, Central Gippsland and East Gippsland. By mid ’07 we had added quite a few riders to the numbers including our incredible John Krause. So from small beginnings has grown a larger and solid group. Andrea and I play a very small part in the group now and John and Gordon and some other great members steer the ship very capably and I know you will all

agree that the newsletter for example is a truly wonderful thing. This is just our small Victorian chapter and one of the really wonderful things that happened every year is of course, the national Run.

As my beginnings were around the last Tassie national Run I had high expectations for this one. It didn’t disappoint and indeed it even surpassed the ’06 Run. Of course the ferry trip and beautiful countryside set a very high bar, but I think it is the wonderful hospitality and camaraderie of the Tassie folk that makes it such a special time. I personally met many new folk this time, unknown to me previously. This made for much interesting and illuminating conversation. The food, sleeping quarters, facilities, activities and rides were excellent. we were very aware of God’s hand on us all, especially highlighted by Colin Berris’s miraculous escape from serious injury when he came off his ’70 BMW in gravel and

Page 6: ALL ABOARD TASSIE HERE WE COME - …cmaaus.org/vic/userfiles/file/CMA VIC Newsletter DEC 2012.pdfCommittee Member (2) Gordon McPhee 03 56552492 04 2747 6662 mcpheehome@westnet.com.au

drizzling rain. Even the bike was resurrected the next day by a very clever group of bikers.

My highlight of the weekend was the worship service on the Sunday morning. I was really touched and blessed by the singing and music, Andrea R’s testimony of her and her family’s experience in the savage ’09 bushfires

and USA Kerry’s message which was his testimony. It all coalesced into an amazing time with the Lord and each other. Thank you again to the Tassie CMA crew for a memorable national Run

which will set a new benchmark for us all to aspire to. Hope to see you all at the Victorian National Run at Forest Edge in November ’13. It will be your attendance that will make it a great time together. Keep riding - stay safe - God be with you. Penny van Houts

TASSIE TRIP – Thu October 4th

, 2012

By Gordon McPhee

8 Days Riding 8 Days Riding 8 Days Riding ––– the Big Figure 8 Tour of Tassie.the Big Figure 8 Tour of Tassie.the Big Figure 8 Tour of Tassie. Thursday arvo – met the boys (Daryl, John & Nev) at Officer to begin our 8 days in Tassie. Neville had already ridden down from Wangaratta that afternoon to join us and we rode into Melbourne together to catch the overnight ferry. About 60 of us were heading south to Tassie that night for Convention at Camp Clayton, Ulverstone.

Overnight trip was pretty average with high wind and big swell. They woke us at 5.45am (not that I slept much) to be ready for departure @ 6.30am. We were met at the dock by some of the Tassie CMA members. We had decided to ride straight to Sheffield for breakfast. The Bakery was happy to see us and I put out the plans for some rides of different distances, knowing we needed to be back in Burnie for lunch at 1pm. We were there to ride as much as possible, so the big kms ride was unanimous. We had a walk through town and admired the murals everywhere, fuelled up and headed off through Paradise/Molecreek/Mt. Roland – stopped for photos/past the entrance to Cradle Mt. National Park and onto Warratah for morning tea. The wind was quite strong and gusting occasionally. Light showers of rain near Cradle Mt. Got pretty cold 4C at Warratah and we decided to don the wet weather gear for the ride back to Burnie (75kms).

Arriving at the Motorbike shop

for BBQ lunch people wondered why we had w/w/gear on, as it was sunny and 18c. We replied by talking about our 250km ride before lunch. After lunch we rode up to Wynyard for afternoon tea and later to Camp Clayton.

Convention was good. I’ll leave that to others to write about. We did a few day rides during Convention. Saturday’s ride started out similar to our Friday ride through Mole Creek & Mt. Roland, but we went to Lake Barrington (raining) and back home. Sunday afternoon Daryl, John & I headed out to Leven Gorge via Riana/Gunns Plains/Sth Preston and Nieta – great views at the Gorge lookouts and if you focussed on the river way below you could see the white water rafters. Had a good walk in the sunshine – glad we took the anticlockwise direction on the track as we could descend the steep section of 600+ stairs. Also glad about the rest seating on the return path. We headed back through Upper Castra and Sprent. Forgot to set our clocks forward for daylight saving and arrived back at camp after Bathurst had finished!

Monday was the start of our figure 8 tour of Tassie. Today Greg and Ted on the Spider joined us for the first part of our tour. Headed out through Sprent/Upper Castra/Moina/Mt. Roland with morning tea at the Honey store at Chudleigh. Onto Deloraine for fuel and lunch at the Bakery, out through Perth ( Ted & Greg headed back towards Launceston), turning south down the main highway, and left at the Esk Highway heading to the east coast. Stopping at Avoca we decided to travel up to Rossarden (5km gravel and then a great twisty mountain pass road). Started to rain just as we got to Fingal, headed for St. Mary’s and down the Elephant Pass to our overnight stop at White Sands Resort, Four Mile Creek. Beautiful views overlooking the ocean from our room & the restaurant.

Tuesday morning we headed north up the coast to St. Helen’s bakery for breakfast and fuel up. We travelled through Scottsdale, skirting south of Launceston, Perth and on to Longford for lunch and refuel. Soon we had 20 mins of switchbacks going up the Poatina esses onto the Western tiers. Weather was cloudy but at 1200 mtr it was pretty cold. Travelling west past the high plains lakes, then south down to Bothwell for afternoon tea. From there we took a great little back road toward Hamilton and onto the main highway & onto New Norfolk for 2 nights at the Shingles Riverside Cottages B&B. The owner allowed us to use her garage to lock up the bikes. Tea at the pub and a good night’s sleep finished off a great day of riding.

Jason and Terry from CMA SA joined us in New Norfolk Wednesday morning for the day ride out to Lake Pedder and the Gordon Dam. The first part through the rainforest was interesting with the green slime in the middle of the road – riding on the wheel tracks until we got up to the high plain area. The rest of this road was fantastic – great tar and sweeping corners, along past Lake Pedder and onto the Gordon Dam. Walked across the wall, lots of photo opportunities on this trip. Lunch at Lake Pedder Chalet, which had just reopened after three years. Returning back along the Gordon River Road, we stopped at the greeny anti-logging camp for photos. We continued into Hobart 15c with Terry and Jason, and up to Mt. Wellington 4c. Back home to New Norfolk by nightfall (another 400km day).

Thursday we went to Russell Falls, took the back road through Ellendale across the bridge over Meadowbank lake, then lunch at Tarraleah and photos of the Hydro station just near the road. We stopped at Lake St Clair National Park –great photos of the blue sky, trees & lake with snow on the nearby hills. Along this highway heading west (with it’s ups & downs ,tight & twisty mountain passes, as well as open\sweeping sections) we stopped at Nelson Falls for a rest stop\walk to the falls. At one stage we were followed very closely by a black Navara ute through a tight twisty

Page 11: ALL ABOARD TASSIE HERE WE COME - …cmaaus.org/vic/userfiles/file/CMA VIC Newsletter DEC 2012.pdfCommittee Member (2) Gordon McPhee 03 56552492 04 2747 6662 mcpheehome@westnet.com.au

section-obviously a local tradie, because as the road opened out he was gone! We only started to catch him at the end of the 99 corners going into Queenstown-where we refuelled\took some more photos. Off to Strahan for dinner & our last night stopover. Dinner @ the pub by the wharf & a catch up with the other CMAers who were on the official post convention tour.

Friday dawned cloudy with showers-typical of the west coast area. We visited the huon pine store, watched a craftsman carving & looked at the mill. Headed out through Zeehan & had just cleared the rain by the morning tea break @ Rosebery. Unfortunately the rain started again before we left, but after 30 minutes or so of heading north, we were on dry road again. Passed through Hellyer Gorge towards Wynyard & up the coastal highway to Stanley-lunch & chairlift ride. We could see the wet weather in the distance back towards Bernie but when we headed east the rain had stopped. Fuelled up again & taking the coast road near Penguin to Ulverstone arriving back at the ferry by 5.30pm(ready to board @ 6pm for 7.30 departure) Our level was half full of bikes-there were 2 other groups going to Melbourne as well as CMAers. A roughish trip back overnight-glad I took motion tablets with me. The water smooths out once inside Port Phillip Bay & you know sleep is going to be short as departure call is @ 5.45am.Our deck is first off the boat, so we say goodbye & head out towards Gippsland on the Monash freeway.I ’d put my wet weather gear on but the other guys got wet when it poured near Narre Warren. We stopped @ Berwick Macca’s for breakfast & home from there.

Thanks to John K for organizing the accommodation in Tassie-all places were worth staying at again. Just over 2,500kms in 8 days for me-more for Neville (living in Wangaratta) We’d had 1 showery day & only 3 or 4 other lots of showers-unlike Victoria where it poured nearly all week! Thanks Lord! Our group was John K-VFR800 Neville-BMW R1200R Daryl-GSXR750 Gordon-SprintST 955i

MotoGP the following weekend & Snowy ride on Melb Cup weekend-a great time to be out riding in God’s creation.

Ride safely Gordon

TASSIE National Run

Hi Nicky and some of our other friends, Please find below our appreciation of your support. God bless you Colin Colin Berris - experience in Tasmania on the Christian Motorcyclists Association of Australia National Run. I start thanking the Almighty and CMA friends for their grace and generosity in caring for me on Saturday 6 October 2012. While swinging right on a bend in the Lemonthyme Road, Liena, Tasmania I slide off the bitumen and then into the ditch alongside the road. I was thrown and landed alongside my bike in much better condition than she was.(1970, BMW R60/5). Jacqui had decided to stay behind at Camp Clayton. To those nurses who checked me out on the spot and over the next few days I say "Thank you". As it turned out I suffered only a couple of strained muscles. The ditch was full of bushes and grass and provided a good landing. The culvert hidden there was no help! To those who picked up all the pieces including my "Tom Tom" and helped to bundle the bike into and out of John's Landcruiser, again I say "Thank you". To Barry and Stu and those mechanics who straightened up the bike and had me prepared for the worst, "Thank you". The RACV provided me a car for our week in Bicheno. We drove, read and walked together. It was very nice. They then got me home from the "Princess" with a couple of huge cases while Jacqui rode her bike. We cancelled one bike fare and turned it into a cabin, so we got a good sleep until 5:45am. Shannons Insurance took the bike to Melbourne for assessment. This morning I was told that they considered the bike beyond economic repair and so would pay out the money I had in-sured the Bike for, and send me the bike free of charge.

Yes, things could so easily have been worse, but we are so glad they were not. I even expect to pick up an alternative next week. It is a 1996 Yamaha Virago XV1100. We decid-ed to buy some-thing Jacqui could drive. She can put her feet down more securely than her XV 535. Thank you Lord. God bless you all Colin and Jacqui

Western Report

Recent CMA West Ramblings

It has been some time since I ‘put pen to paper’. There was a time when I would gleefully write up every ride or rally attendance with no reminder or encouragement require. These days I have to be goaded into it. I will have to develop a pattern again.

The CMA West riding group has been running for seven or eight years now. I really do lose track of time, as it fairly flies past. How can it possibly be December again ?

We have folk drift in and out of involvement. They will have there own reasons, and I would not like to think it’s because our little core of riders – really just myself, Greg and Merv – are boring, too predictable or unfriendly. We have had some discussion as to why our demographic seems to mirror the Ulysses Club, in that we are mostly old and grey, and ride motorcycles many younger riders might see as boring. I make no apologies to young blokes for my own lack of trendy riding gear and my preference for more sensible, practical motorcycles.

What, you exclaim ? Surely the Bonnie is not the least bit sensible ? Well. You may be right; I certainly have to keep on top of maintenance, always on the look out for loosened fasteners or cracked brackets.

Neither do I feel I have to look like a ‘bikie’, with an approved outfit – black leather vest with laces, suds, buckles and such. We may all dress as we please, of course. I don’t quite get around to sewing on badges and patches; not even our CMA roundel, to my shame. My eyes don’t work with needle and thread anymore, if they ever did. My own emphasis is on safety and practicality, so I will always wear a long-sleeved protective jacket, full-face helmet and proper gloves

regardless of how hot and uncomfortable it is. I’ve had Aldi ‘bike boots in recent years, which wear well, and are surely better than my old gumboots – though not as waterproof, of course. One of the seams has opened up on the inside of the left boot, possibly because hot oil has rotted the stitching. ‘Mister Minit’ will probably be very dear.

How do we attract younger members into CMA ? Greg and I have thought about this. There seems to be no easy answer. I was only a young fellow myself when I first encountered CMA and other Christian ‘bike groups 25-odd years ago. I remember being impressed with young members of Crusaders for Christ’ in the early eighties, when I was only in my early twenties. If they were not based in Shepparton and Wangaratta, I may have joined. I certainly sought them out, associated with them at rallies. It may be an unfair criticism, but young people today, motorcyclists or not, appear to lack commitment to any social grouping. They often seem to flit in and out of churches and any other lesser kind of associations. They get a better offer, often at five minutes notice via text message. Excuses and apologies – and often not even that; you just don’t see them. I heard my son (27 years) talking about mates last weekend who felt they were obliged to make an appearance at three or four parties in one night. That sounds far too busy to me, even Incomprehensible. We do tend to settle down with age – possible middle-age. “Young people today . . . . .” I think I am just confirming myself as a cranky old, whinging so-and-so.

Anyway, our pattern this year – if it can be called that - has been to involve ourselves in rides organised by other areas, or decide to attend a particular event and invite folk on our email list to come along. We followed the ‘last Saturday of the month’ model for years. If I was unavailable, Greg or Merv would be waiting at our Werribee Plaza departure point. Our unstructured approach this year has been to keep an ear out for whatever catch our fancy, and commit to turning up on the day.

Western Report

We have attended the launch of the Ballarat ‘Samaritans’ riding group, church visits at South-west (Hoppers Crossing) and Eureka Chapel (this last Sunday, also in Ballarat), and have rid-den with Adam Tattsy and Dave Frog in Geelong. The response to Bikes for Pastors has been very encouraging indeed, raising over $2000 in one month alone.

We dropped in at the tail-end of the ‘Big boy’s Toys’ afternoon last Saturday 17

th. Greg and I

were welcomed by Adam and Dave. There were boats, kayaks, restored cars including a very nice late-‘60s Fairmont. A good number of motorcyclists attended with a variety of ‘bikes, which were mostly departing as we rolled up.

In the last few months we have attended racing at the Broadford Motorcycle Sports Complex on tow occasions. Myself, Greg, Merv and local contacts Steve and Phil attended a fantastic day of Seniors’ racing. This was a Historic Motorcy-cle Racing Association event for competitors' aged 45 and over. There were many very competitive riders of late ‘80s and into the ‘90s aluminium beam-framed machines which would be readily classed as ‘modern’. Many individuals and teams spared no expense with their garage

set-ups – very flash indeed – and were obviously very serious about what they were doing. ‘Team Africa’ (‘Another ****** Race I Can’t Afford’ J ) favoured a range of older British machines. It was definitely a ‘run what you brung’ affair for others; I especially enjoyed talking to a pair of older blokes who lived and breathed Velocettes. They also had an early 350cc BSA Goldstar for sale – well-used, but also well-fettled. The ‘80s sidecars reminded me of cruise missiles. Wide, wide car tyres and rev-limiters kicking in to save their engines.

The most incredible memory of this event was of one rider, into his fifties, who defied the odds of seriously major physical impairment. Try riding a ‘bike, let alone racing, with only one arm and one leg – and both on the same (left) side. He had a heavily modified Kawasaki - an early ‘90s ZX-R 750, by the look of it. All the controls were on the left side; doubled-up clutch/front brake levers, similarly doubled-up pedals for gear-change and rear brake. He fell off during practice and again during his main race. The first time, I saw him wave that he was all right, before standing upright and hopping on his single foot. The second occasion was more serious, leaving him with a suspected broken collar bone (missing arm). An incredible display of indomitable courage – there’s apparently no stopping him. He gets around in a lightweight ‘sports’ wheelchair, but uses no prosthetics when riding the ‘bike. He seems very slim and fit; I don’t think he could afford to carry any weight. Amazing!

I attended the Southern Classic meeting last

Page 15: ALL ABOARD TASSIE HERE WE COME - …cmaaus.org/vic/userfiles/file/CMA VIC Newsletter DEC 2012.pdfCommittee Member (2) Gordon McPhee 03 56552492 04 2747 6662 mcpheehome@westnet.com.au

month at short notice, almost on a whim. This meeting was busier than the last, with many more spectators. The pit area and nearby marquees were also busier with competitors. It was a beautiful day weatherwise, without being too warm. My favourite event, the last before I left for home around four o’clock, was the classic sidecars. These were mostly British outfits from up to the early ‘60s, after which purpose-built ‘kneelers’ began to take over. Squealing tyres, barely-adequate brakes, squirming and drifting through the corners – magnificent!

If it sounds like I enjoy my older – and especially British – machines, those who know me at all will be left in no doubt. J

We try to attend the Yea committee meeting’s when we can, and Greg and I even managed to fit in the BMW Club’s end-of-year gathering on the way back last Saturday.

I’ve still got the Bonnie in pieces, awaiting a reassembly of the front end, with new headstem bearings, headlamp shell, mudguard and wheel bearings. And a new top fork yoke, replacing a cracked original, and rebuilding the front disc brake. Phewwww! I’ll get there.

The important thing is that we continue to organise ourselves by way of continuing to ride and join in various meeting and events. We will keep trying to be the best example and witness for our Lord Jesus Christ that He enables us to be. It keeps us busy . . . J

Sat 20th October

We meet a small group of riders from the Japanese Vintage Motorcycle Club at the local McDonald’s and headed out Kilfeera Road with them to Edi Gap to the location of the Spaghetti Rally run by the Motor Guzzi Club.

The camp site was totally overgrown and John Cass decided to use their grass cutter and get it into action, being a typical woman I said ‘what about if we camped over there’ so we moved the bikes and cut the grass in another area close to the action.

After setting out camp we checked out the other motor bikes in attendance and caught up with new and older acquaintances, A motorbike that caught our attention was a Guzzi with a hard top. It seems this couple are traveling the world and had a accident caused by a flat tyre near Seymour, which left her with a broken pelvis. So now a wheel chair has been strapped to the rear. Saturday arvo was the gymkhana with the usual laughs, Nev and Sue Weeks rode up for a quick trip.

Saturday night everyone was dished up a bowl full of spaghetti , with the extra trimming and yes adding chili did make it hot. That night we sat around the camp fire and talked. Bob and Cass left early in the morning but we stayed to hear the awards being handed out. We had taken our small white dog Rani on the back of my motorbike, which she totally enjoyed but had a run in with 4 hunting dogs when we arrived back home and was fortunate to survive the attack.

This was the first time we had camped at this Rally and we thoroughly enjoyed the quietness (no music / no band) and we even got to catch up with Frank Rossi (ex CMA member)

September ride—Eildon

and beyond

Gordon & I myself headed off to lake

Eildon for a one night stop over. We left after our CMA meeting at the YEA RSL.

I ‘d only got a few KM’s down the road when my GPS decided it didn’t want to

travel with me and took off in another direction. Sadly that was the end of it and no repairs could be done to bring it

back to life . Grieving happened mo-mentarily as I had only just purchased

it. We headed via recently sealed road around to Jameson doing some 400 bends/corners in the 62 km section .

We continued to Mansfield where we rested that night. In 2013 we plan to do

the trip again hopefully we can have a few more join us.

Nov—Snowy’s Ride

A great start –NOT Rain, Rain, Rain, Rain and more Rain I delayed leaving FE for 45 minutes as I though the rain cloud might cease and blow through, this was not the case. Chris and I meet Daryl Tate at his house, us on the bikes and Chris in her Kia. We left in pouring rain ,only to be held up on the freeway outside Moe . We got through the traffic as it was a stand still but Chris just had to wait. Another 30+ minutes . We arrived at Penny's feeling a little damp. Gordon was waiting with Jenny. Penny made us all a cuppa which was much appreciated. Penny advised us that she was not joining this time due to her very sick mum. We all understood, as this had be in our prayers for some days. Another hour past ,the rain cloud had finally decid-ed to move on ,we headed off, travelling just be-hind it. Gordon McPhee on his Triumph Sprint Daryl Tate on his new Suzuki 750 GSX R and myself the Honda VFR Chris Krause & Jenny McPhee - Silver Toyota Corolla Late lunch at the Big M was had in Bairnsdale. We fuelled up Newmerella, past Orbost then Cann River. The stops were short as time was getting away. We had rang earlier to advise our accom-modation that we were running very late.

. Up through the Cann Valley to Bombala, then Dalgety & arriving Jinabyne by 6 ish. We headed to the local pub for the $10 schnitzel then a quick shop as they closed at 8.00 pm We had booked the same house as last year as it had meet our needs extremely well. Lisa Clarke joined us later that night which Penny had organized.

Friday morning, we headed up to Thredbo to test ride a few of the Hondas We talked and drank a few coffees......

The girls did their retail therapy and later all

meet back at the house , to relax.

Saturday we headed off to Charlottes Pass

then down the mountain and around the

various towns getting our snowy's card

stamped. Saturday night we had an invite

to join other Christian riders at the Lodge.

We enjoyed the meal together and chatted

over a coffee , maybe glass of Red too. We

all hopped into car except Daryl ( Must have

drawn the short straw) and headed home

later that evening.

Sunday morning was a little bit like going

round and round in circles. Couldn’t find the

local Baptist church. Our info in the room

was said open , but had found out later that

it had closed. We finished up at the

Anglican/Uniting church, where they had a

visiting outreach team visiting. We shared

morning tea and few long chats, Out of the

chats, there was a common theme

happening that next year CMA could have

more of a presence at the snowy's. There

local Pastor going to head this up and

make contact next year. That afternoon

we had a lazy day enjoying the beautiful

surrounds of the Lake Crackenback Resort

Monday was a very casual day, still the

boys doing the riding and the girls in the car

doing the retail therapy. Tuesday was

departure day, heading back after relaxing

stay in the High country.

The rain had stayed away and was blessed

with a good company of friends

MOTO GP

MotoGP October 2012

It was the last race for Casey Stoner @ Phillip Island before retirement so Jason & I got MotoGP tickets-3xstands for 3 days available for the first time this year. You could choose your position each day.

Friday was cloudy with showers on & off. We had chosen the Gardner Straight stand & our seats were directly opposite Honda’s pit-interesting some teams have small weather stations on their pit equipment. The Motorcycle Expo was just behind us & we visited between events. Many of the riders where signing autographs for the chosen few-we saw Casey, Dani Pedrosa& Randy De Puniet @ the autograph stage.

Australian Supersport\superstock 600’s(practice,qualifying,race1) & Su-perbike\superstock 1,000’s(practice,qualifying,race1) were on the timetable as well as Moto2 Moto3 & MotoGP bikes(2 x sessions of free practice).

I forgot how noisy & quick these bikes are-Moto3-250cc fours troke singles were doing 230+ Kms\hr Moto2-600cc Honda were doing 280+ kms\hr & MotoGP 335kms\hr on the straight!!

A local rider Chris McLaren from Leongatha got a call up 2 days before the event to ride Yonny Hernandez’s MotoGP bike (Yonny broke his arm on the previous weekend in Malaysia)-Chris’ had never ridden one of these MotoGP bikes but had just finished racing Moto2 in Spain-the team knew him & knew he’d competed in Australia on Superbikes(Aust National series previous years) It was a steep learning curve on Friday\new bike\hadn’t raced @ Phillip Island for 18 months -5secs slower than Casey but only the first time on the bike. Great job Chris! The

Roulettes Arial display was modified due to the weather( low cloud)

Saturday we were on the Bass Stand just near Stoner corner-turn 3.You could grab one of the free buses which would take you around the outside of the circuit to your stand.Free practice & Qualifying for the top 3 classes & race 2\3 for local riders. Roulettes were on again but this time in the middle of the day-still cloudy & some rain showers during the day. Stoner was laying some big black lines in turn 3 & was much quicker than anyone else. Chris McLaren was getting faster each time but Casey kept resetting the benchmark- Chris had to be within 107% of Casey’s time to Qualify for the race on Sunday-he missed by 1.5 seconds having fallen off & getting back on the spare bike\bettering his previous time. Marc Marquez (who replaces the retiring Stoner @ Honda in MotoGP next year) & Pol Espargaro were quick as usual in Moto2’s but Australia’s Anthony West was there as well.Moto3 Sandro Cortese was the benchmark on his KTM, the Aussies Arthur Sissis-KTM(7th in qualifying & Jack Miller-Honda did ok in qualifying too.

Sunday we were seated @ Lukey heights & this year the organizers had a Super-cross dirt track formed behind the stand with races all weekend. A great idea-lots of action.

MOTO GP

The day turned out fine & Aust supersport\ superstock 600’s race 3 started the day off, with aussie superbikes\superstock race3 next.

Chris McLaren got one more chance to qualify in MotoGP warm up but fell off again-pushing hard & less than half a second outside the 107% cutoff-a great experience for him (having only ridden the bike for 5 sessions)

Moto3 race-Sandro Cortese (KTM) clears out & wins, with Miquel Oliveira (Suter\Honda) 2nd & Aussie Arthur Sissis(KTM) beats Alex Rins(Suter\Honda) home for 3rd place-The crowd is excited with an Aussie on the podium!

Moto2 race-Pol Espargaro wins Aussie with Anthony West in 2nd place & Marc Marquez just pips Scott Redding over the line. Redding had been very spectacular with his sideways backing in on several corners-especially turn 4(Honda corner) That’s 2 Aussie’s on the podium in 2 races-the crowd goes wild!!

MotoGP race- Casey Stoner, Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, Crutchlow & Dovizioso get to the front of the pack on the first lap, coming into turn 4 on lap2 Dani Pedrosa’s (Honda Factory team) front tyre goes out from under him while leading-he retires giving Lorenzo( Yamaha team) the world championship. Lorenzo’s Yamaha is unable to stay with Stoner Honda-who’s been in a class of his own all weekend, but pushes hard enough keeping away from Cal Crutchlow(Tech3 Yamaha) & his teammate Andrea Dovizioso who are dicing for position with Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) & Alvaro Bautista (Gresini Honda)

Casey Stoner rides away with the win (six in a row @ Phillip Island) 9 secs ahead of the new World Champion Jorge Lorenzo. Cal Crutchlow(3rd) is able to break away from Dovizioso, Bautista & Bradl who fight for the minor placings. Valentino Rossi & Nicki Hayden battled on the Ducati’s for much of the weekend with no pace & the race was amongst themselves. Rossi(7th) coming home ahead of his teammate Hayden(8th). A good result for Aussie’s & a great weekend of racing overall.

Gordon

Ps-pity it took so long to get out of the carpark over the road from Lukey heights after the event-2hrs

Bikes for Pastors

Dear Jim, Di and Jo. Thank you for this lovely new bike. See picture below. After the money getting lost into various CMS accounts for a while it finially came into our account here a few weeks ago. We then decided that as we were going to the capital for some meetings we would buy it in the Honda show rooms there as is cheaper, could get the colour we wanted (not black like everybody else's) and also staff at head office could help us get it all registered properly. So here are some details. purchase price $820, carry basket and rack $14, Registration (one off to get plates) $30, annual road tax $1.25. We will spend the remaining on some nobby tires for the wet weather and staff helmets. Many thanks, and so sorry that this has taken so long...but actually the timing has worked out perfect for the project as we now have lots of activity going on and the bike is in constant use on errands and following up various people. God's blessing, Ken
