Editorial

In the 22nd edition of Alkhorayef Quarterly Issue of January 2005, the main reportage was about the march of training in Alkhorayef Group and theresults achieved in the Group during 2004. At the time when we were rejoicing the results, our hearts were overwhelmed with anxiety and fear that the results of the next year would not be suitable with the successes; for what is more important than achieving the success is maintaining it. Thus all the people in Alkhorayef Group were obsessed to continue work and exert more efforts to make the results of the next year betterthan they were in 2004. Despite the challenges encountered during 2005 - the most important of them was the project of turning to the new Oracle information system, expansion in the Groupʼs various projects, and increasing the number of employees - we wereable, with the grace of God, to maintain the achievements in the training field. The number of training hours to the number of employees in Alkhorayef Commercial Company (ACC) in 2005 amounted to 30 training hours/ employee despite the increase in the number of employees, according to what was explained later. This confirms the fact that the Groupʼs belief in the distinction and competition in the business world of today stem from the power of the companies and the competent and qualified human cadres they have to perform the jobs. We,in Alkhorayef Group, feel proud of that. The manpower of the Group has grown remarkably to enhance the companyʼs position, indicate clearly its power, growing investments, economic role on the social level, and creation of job opportunities. It requires at the same time exerting more efforts to maintain the efficiency and professionalism of the Groupʼs humancapital. The number of employees increased from 3260 in the beginning of 2005 to 3999 at the end of the same year; a growth rate of 22%. The total number of the Groupʼs employees in the middle of this year amounted to 4350; a growthrate of 9%. We, in the Human Resources Department, confirm our determination to exert every possible effort to facilitate the task of our employees, provide them with a good work environment, the biggest number of possible training, development, and growth opportunities in conjunction with the differentdepartments in the Group.Replies

In the last edition colleague Abdullah Bajamaʼn presented two suggestions in which he demanded a page to be assigned for the explanation of some work rules and social insurance that concern the employee; and another page for the articles that concern safety in workplace and protection of environment. Owing to the importance of the two suggestions, this edition contained the first article of colleague Khalid Al-Shibr about the awareness to the importance of safety in the workplace and social insurance that concern the employee. We will strive, God willing, in the next edition to explainsome work rules and social insurance. We here thank Brother Abdullah Bajamaʼn for the suggestions and wish all brothers and colleagues to provide us with their views and suggestions as they stimulate us to provide the useful material and promote the magazine. We also like to confirm that we will carefully read all the suggestions and instantly work to apply the possible ones.Best regards and wishes.

And the Brilliance Continues…

New Achievements for Alkhorayef Group in Human Investment

The Human Resources Department (HRD) in Alkhorayef Group is aspiring to continuously apply the principle of “Continuous Learning Company” which expresses the companyʼs culture and its continuous strive to realize further achievements in Human Resources Department. Within this frame efforts of employees are joined with the HRDʼs programs to realize more successes andachievements.

The concern with this side (investment in human capital) is going along with training polices in all countries of theworld where training and de-velopment of human resourc- es have become a big industry as to its theories, objectives, importance, organization, content, method, fixtures, cost, and returns. Thus it isno longer possible or accept-able to leave a room for im-

provisation and spontaneity in executing and directing it to establishments that desire to be effective and influential power. so, planning, research, andevaluation have become im-portant tasks of modern train- ing programs and these taskshave known systems in devel- oped education and training. As it is known, training is one of the basic pillars in human

resources plans that enable companies and establishmentsto achieve their objectives. We, in Alkhorayef Group, in turn prepare the human capital, which is the realwealth and real competi- tive element in todayʼs worldwhere the power of establish- ments is measured by human capital. We also believe thatthe efficiency of human capi-tal of any establishment is in-

* Skills adopted by the Group: working with the team spirit, effective communication, quality, and customer care.

* Various programs executed by the Training Department to achieve the required objectives

creased by the level of skillsin this element through con-tinuous training and develop-ment. Taking off from this point Alkhorayef Group is keen toraise the level of training in-side its establishments to in- crease the efficiency of humancapital. It set down its objec-tives to raise the level of train- ing and developing employees through plans and courses to

acquire them information and specialized job knowledgerelated to their tasks, devel- op the level of performance, refurbish skills and abilities they enjoy, and enable them to invest these capabilities inthe work field.Training programs in Al- khorayef Group also include changing the conduct and improving trends of work forfurther improvement, devel-

opment, and raising produc-tion competence of employ-ees.

The “Companyʼs Cul- ture” is the Meeting Pointand Springboard of SuccessAs Alkhorayef Group en- joys a wide spread across the world, it is necessary that HRD must change its look tothe Groupʼs identity as an in- ternational and multi-national and cultural Saudi Group. Thismeans we must look positive- ly into this diversity, make use of it as much as possible, and organize it to avoid nega-tive influences sometimes im- posed by multiple cultures, for instance. So the focus is always on the companyʼs culture to be a meeting point for all. Thus the focus is on the Groupsʼvalues and skills that consti- tute the general framework of its culture, working seriouslyto spread these values, and fo-cusing on these skills. It worth mentioning herethat the basic values that con-trol the Group are: 1.Provision of high qualityproducts and services. 2.Care and development for employees3.Development of commu-nities we are working in.4. Technology transfer. 5. Keenness to safety andprotection of environment. The basic skills adopted bythe Group are: 1. Working with the teamspirit.2. Effective communica-tion.3. Quality.4. Customer care.

Article

The period I spent as one of the employees of the respected Alkhorayef Company did not exceed ten years at the moment when I was preparing this article. But what incited me to write this article was the invitation of Mr. Saud Alswailem, General Manager of Human Resources Department, and what I felt about His Excellency s̓ sincere interest to exert efforts to make the employee aware of the importanceof safety. The concern with the issue of safety has stemmed from a humanitarian point that aims at achieving the protection of labor force in the first place; and materials, systems, and equipment fromexposing to hazards in the second place. As achieving protection against hazards actually needs the contribution of all, I present before you some of the basic rules of safety as a reminderfor all after presenting a group of questions. Dear employee, do you think you are applying safety rules in your workplace and you know everything about safety? Examine your information about safety by answering thefollowing questions:1.To keep your workplace tidy and safer: -Mop up the spills at the end of the workingday. - Lay electricity wires and extensions on the floors.-Keep the corridors and stairs free of obstacles. 2.If your mobile phone rang while driving a car,you have to: –-Answer it if it is furnished with an earpiece. - Answer it even if it is not equipped with an earpiece.-Park at a safe parking lot and answer the call. 3.To protect yourself against diseases caused by hot atmosphere when you are working in anopen area:- Do not performed laborious jobs in midday.- Take coffee or soft drinks. - Take intervals in a shady and well- ventilatedarea. 4.Normal safety shoes are equipped with front covers of steel designed to protect you against: - Slipping on wet floors. - Hazard of exposing to incendiary and causticmaterials. - Dropping or rolling bodies. 5. Is it necessary to report each incident about to happen?

- No, because there is no work injury or damage of properties. - No, because you always perform your tasks in the same way and no injury occurred. - Yes, because it helps verify the causes of the incident and correct it. In case you have chosen the third answer from each question, then you are in the upper part of the (floating iceberg) issue itself. And in case you have chosen one of the two other answers, then you are in the invisible part and you need to reconsider the scope of your knowledge aboutthe basic safety rules including the following:Always follow the following safety rules: - Abide with all safety rules and proceduresapplied in the company. - Immediately report to your direct boss about any incident actually occurred or about tooccur. - Immediately correct and report about yourunsafe situations. - Always use the right personal safety equipmentand maintain them in a good condition. - Do not take risks and become hasty. Ask if youdo not know. - Make sure of the maintenance of tools andequipment. - Avoid what distracts you of your work and donot participate in a rough jesting. - Lift loads in a proper and safe way. Lift things by using your feet and bent knees. Ask for helpwhen lifting heavy loads. - Acquire the necessary training to perform youtasks safely. - Keep all tools well-arranged by assigning a place for everything. From the above mentioned it is clear that work environment is not automatically safe, but it will be so when all exert efforts. But how is thecontribution? From a personal point of view, you have to be concerned and aware of the safety rules in all times and places. Let the prevention of accidents be one of your general plans. The beginning must be initiated by everybody and with everybody; as it is said that safety is theresponsibility of all. In the end, I hope I have succeeded in conveying my point of view, though I did not present a newthing. Let us all work together in an accident-free environment and wish everyone safety.

Article

Spreading mutual respect among people is one of the most important requirements of the refined Islamic life. It is one of the appearances of civilized progress; for as people climb up the steps of civilization, their feeing towards each other improves and at the same time they expect from others to treat them with great respect and gentleness. Spreading respect means some sort of promotion in the relations; as it does not prevail in a milieu unless people leave behind a numberof appearances of alienation, negligence, and chaos. It is important that a man must respect and esteem himself as that helps him promote. Holy Quran incites us to clean ourselves and praises the blaming self that has enough vitality and vigilance to revise errors. It also urges us to keep away from self commendation for fear of falling in arrogance and vanity. It is not contradicting that a human being must know the value of himself, and be cognizant of its merits and points of superiority, as these qualities are of therequired and lauded self awareness. It is good to criticize yourself and know the negative and weak points. God, to Whom ascribed all perfection and majesty, has made repentance and left its gate wide open throughout life so that we can wash our hearts of the sins and fold the old files with all their baddeeds. Self respect means the feeling of the human being of his value, pride, and his ability to do the tasks his peers perform. It is a feeling of efficiency, competence, ability to take the initiative, resistance, refrain from the works respected people keep away from, and distance himself from what is not legally, customary, and tactly acceptable. So, self respect is based on optimism, feeling of spiritual elegance, comfort, and generosity. We have to deepen these meanings in ourselves and conduct. It is important to say that self respect and esteem is the origin of many personal and social diseases. It is also important to say that respecting our selves is not something that we inherit from our fathers, ancestors, and not a programmed thing in the genetical heritage of some people; but it is an accumulation in the self through the achievements and successive victories over fancies, wealths, anddesires. Self respect is something born from the depth of straightness on thecommands of God, rising above trifles, and shameful stances. But respecting others is in fact much more important as one of the deep-rooted bases of virtue is the search for nice and polished formulas in treating and addressing people in the way they feeldignified and noble. We have to treat people with the highest standards of respect that we would like them to treat us with. Besides, we have to treat them not on the basis of the conditions and situations they are in, but on the basis of what we love them to be in i.e. to take the principle of treating people with respect as a tool to promote ourselves, our brothers, colleagues, acquaintances, and members of our community.

Of the main causes of dispute between any two parties is the clinging of each party to its ideas. So the stronger party takes the decision he perceives right regardless of the view of the other party. This of course might result in violent reactions among those concerned with this decision and which inturn might lead to unacceptable consequences. In the above mentioned introduction I wanted to explain briefly the individual improvised decision and the destiny that it may lead to. Experts in the science of management advice not to take a decision alone or hurriedly before asking other people whose advice is important in reaching the sound decision that serves the public interest, supports development and promotion; and not the contrary. Of course, the process of decision taking between the individual and himself is not the same process if accomplishedthrough the group. The policy of individual decision based on one view that does not regard the other has a lot of disadvantages and effects of non-commendable consequences. If it does not lead to failure and deterioration, it will certainly have negative effects such as not optimally exploiting human abilities, destroying the principle of teamwork, disabling creativity and invention in workers, and eliminating spirit of loyalty and belonging. It also degrades determination, morale of workers, and gets rid of honest competition, thatmostly might have the bigger role in promoting work. The individual decision has a big role in the emergence of power lovers and power centers, which in turn result in latent struggles and challenges between these powers. It also leads to unfruitful and unconstructive decisions that are just taken for mere show of power and ability to execute without payingattention to the results and consequences behind these decisions. Asking the advice is an important requirement in all matters as Islam, our True Religion , advises us. In reality it is very clear that the process of decision taking between the individual and himself is not the same process if accomplished through a group. Starting an investment project without asking the advise of experts (specialized bodies in feasibility studies forinstance) mostly dooms the project. From here we advice every decision maker aspiring to have a successful, fruitful, and supporting decision for the success and development of workto focus on the following: - He has to study the decision carefully before taking it by asking himself these questions: How much is it needed? What is the right option? How to make it successful? Of course all these questions need the advice of otherexpert people; or in other words a collective decision. - He has not to respond to his feelings, emotions, and personal desires whenresearching this issue. - He must not hesitate, postpone, or delay taking and applying the right decision. That will weaken the determination and extinguish the flame ofenthusiasm of the participant team in taking and applying the decision. - He has to remove obstacles, whatever they are, that might lead to failureof the decision. - He personally has to follow up the process of implementing the decisionand make sure that it is executed as planned.
