47 BOWDLER SHARPE, Richard. Monograph of the Paradiseidae, or Birds of Paradise, and Ptilonorhynchidae, or Bower-Birds. London: Henry Sotheran & Co., 1891-1898. Two elephant folio volumes bound in contemporary half green crushed morocco over green cloth boards. Spines decoratively gilt in compartments, and with raised bands. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Complete with 79 truly magnificent later hand-coloured lithographed plates, for the most part by W. M. Hart, J. Gould’s chief artist and lithographer, with a few by J. G. Keulemans. Originally issued in eight parts, this copy has the original printed wrappers bound in at the rear of each volume. Richard Bowdler Sharpe (1847-1909), a bird enthusiast since boyhood, began his career with London booksellers W. H. Smith and later Bernard Quaritch. In 1867, he became the first librarian of the Zoological Society of London. It wasn’t until the 1868-1871 publication of his Monograph of the Kingfishers, with 125 plates by Keulemans, that Sharpe first rose to prominence as an ornithologist. Sharpe enjoyed a longstanding acquaintance with John Gould. Indeed, when Gould died in 1881, Sharpe dedicated himself to completing a number of Gould’s unfinished works, including Birds of New Guinea (1875-1888). As noted in the appendix to the present work, Gould had intended, following the completion of that work, which treated almost every species of the birds of paradise then known, to publish a complete monograph on the Paradiseidae, for which purpose he had retained the lithographic stones. As Sharpe explains in the Preface, the present work contains some plates reproduced from Gould’s Birds of New Guinea, though a great many appear for the very first time (p. iii). Indeed, “[s]ince Gould’s time… many marvellous new species have been discovered, and these have been described and figured in the present work” (p. xxi), Notably, birds of paradise and bowerbirds were then believed to be of the same family (see p. v). Sharpe would later assume the role of Senior Assistant at the British Museum, and in 1895, Assistant Keeper of Zoology, in charge of the bird collections. Here offered is a rare and extraordinary work concerning some of the planet’s most beautiful creatures. $45,000

the “one who bore the chief responsibility for the war and policy of the British Empire and Commonwealths” (p. vii), here offered is the rare Australian first edition set (published simultaneously with the British first editions) of Winston Churchill’s momentous semi-official six-volume history of World War II (beginning in 1919, immediately following World War I), the stated famous moral of which was, “in war: resolution, in defeat: defiance, in victory; magnanimity, in peace: goodwill” (p. v). Published between 1948 and 1954 in fifteen countries and in eleven languages, it was written with the aid of a team of researchers under Churchill’s literary assistant, historian William Deakin. Norman Brook, the cabinet secretary, allowed Churchill’s researchers relatively free access to wartime files and in turn Churchill submitted his drafts for vetting by Whitehall (Oxford DNB 2014). Informed as it is by personal experience, he refrains from describing the work as “history”, rather he terms it “a contribution to history which will be of service to the future.” (p. vii) $3,250

Fine crisp copy. Ferguson 10181. Rare. NOTE: First edition of this most attractive book, an account of the habits of the horse in Australia, by the pioneer overlander and noted bush artist. Hamilton, who had arrived in Sydney as a midshipman, worked his way east by droving a herd of sheep from Port Philip to Adelaide. He settled in South Australia in 1839 where he was an active participant in the local horse races, and a very keen artist, exhibiting in Adelaide’s first two art exhibition. In 1864 the Adelaide Advertiser praised his accurate renderings and said his drawings of horses “have no equals in the colony”. Five of his drawings were engraved for Eyre’s Journals of Discovery into Central Australia and, along with his contemporary S.T. Gill, his drawings were used to illustrate the published journals of Grey. He owned his own lithographic press and made prints from his drawings which made him, according to Robert Holden, probably the first print-maker in South Australia. In 1848 Hamilton was appointed second clerk in the Colonial Treasury, and subsequently entered the police force, serving as Commissioner of Police from 1867 to 1882. $1,250

214 JOHNSON, Samuel. A Dictionary of the English Language; in which The Words are deduced from their Originals, Explained in their Different Meanings, and Authorized by the Names of the Writers in whose Works they are found. Abstracted from the Folio Edition,

22

By Samuel Johnson A. M. To which is prefixed, A Grammar of the English Language. 2 vols. ...London 1799. 8vo. Bound in original full old tree calf. Spines gilt with morocco title-labels. The bindings show signs of wear, with chipping to the spine heads. The text is printed in double-column. The front endpaper bears the bookplate of John Pollock Esq. Rare octavo edition of Johnson’s Dictionary. Here offered is the work of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), an Englishman, the son of a bookseller, a man of letters, a writer and lexicographer, and one of the most distinguished figures in English literary history. This is a fine edition in octavo of Johnson’s magnum opus, A Dictionary of the English Language, or, as Johnson himself describes it in the preface to the edition in question, “an abstract or epitome of my former work.” (p. iii) The first edition was published in 1755 in folio, and was intended “for the use of such as aspire to exactness of criticism or elegance or style.” (p. iii) With this edition, it was Johnson’s intention rather to provide a “small dictionary”, or “a vocabulary of daily life” (p. iii) for the Everyman. Johnson, having found all other dictionaries with like purpose deficient, assures the reader that, “[t]he words of this dictionary, as opposed to others, are more diligently collected, more accurately spelled, more faithfully explained, and more authentically ascertained.” (p. iv) And, to elucidate the meanings of words, Johnson calls on the great writers, e.g. Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden, Bacon, making this not only a dictionary, but a history of the English language in use (see Preface p. iv). This is one for the anglophile. $2,950
