The Artists
bells ablaZe, an invitational handbell choir drawing from communities throughout southwestern Ontario, came together in September 2004 . The ensemble has performed in concert several times since its inception, and in July 2008 was selected to represent Ontario in a showcase concert at Canada’s national handbell festi-val, Ringing Link . In December 2008, Bells Ablaze was featured in Stratford Summer Music’s seasonal con-cert, Bells and Brass, and they performed Carol of the Bells with the Toronto Symphony at their Special Family Christmas Concert . Setting itself apart from other bell choirs, this dynamic and accomplished group of ringers play challenging repertoire without a conductor, requir-ing not only a high degree of musicianship from each ringer, but a level of synergy and collaboration beyond that found in most ensembles .
Director susaN CarsCaddeN-mifsud has a passion for handbells . She is one of Canada’s most accom-plished handbell soloists, a noted conductor, and a clinician who has shared her expertise and love of ring-ing with directors and choirs across Canada . Susan’s formal music education includes an ARCT (Piano Performance), a Bachelor of Music, and a Bachelor of Education . She has been an elementary school teacher, a private piano instructor, and a music school administrator, but in the world of handbells, Susan ranks among the best .

The Guelph Chamber Choir off ers a variety of choral concerts which contribute to Guelph’s cultural vitality . The choir provides a fulfi lling musical experience for tal-ented amateur choir members, and promotes Canadian and new music, and historically informed practices in early music .
In addition to the annual four-concert series, the GCC also performs in seniors’ residences, and pres-ents a Sing-along Messiah fundraiser for a local charity . The GCC regularly collaborates with other music and arts organizations in Guelph, and supports the Guelph Kiwanis Music Festival with scholarships for four choirs . The GCC has performed in numerous international and local festivals, performed in Britain, Europe and Scan-dinavia, has been broadcast on CBC Radio, and has won prizes in the CBC National Competition for Ama-teur Choirs . The choir has produced seven recordings, including its most recent CD, Carols of the Bells .
Gerald Neufeld has enjoyed a 40-year career as a choral conductor, having performed over 300 concerts ranging from the early Renaissance to commissioned works for the Guelph Chamber Choir . For 18 years, he has been a proponent of historical performances, conducting major choral works accompanied by period orchestras . His research in historical performance practices has informed a vibrant presentation of major
works by Monteverdi, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Mendels-sohn, Brahms, and many others .
Dr . Neufeld has directed the GCC since its founding in 1980, as well as conducting choirs at the University of Guelph and Western University, where he taught conducting for 31 years . The GCC, the U of G Choir, Thames Scholars, and the Faculty of Music Singers have all been win-ners in the CBC National Choral Competition under his direction . He has conducted choirs in festivals in Edinburgh, Wales, Austria, the Czech Republic, plus Toronto and the Guelph Spring Festival . His concert tours include Europe, Ontario, and Quebec . Eight CDs have been recorded under his direction .
Gerald Neufeld was conductor of the Ontario Youth Choir, winner of the Leslie Bell competition for choral conductors, and has served on juries for the Juno Awards, the Leslie Bell Competition, and the Guelph Spring Festival national vocal competition . He has also been active as a choral clinician, festival adjudicator, and speaker on topics in the choral fi eld.

The Guelph Chamber Choir was founded in 1980 under the direction of Gerald Neufeld to foster enjoyment
and appreciation of choral music in the Guelph area . The repertoire of the GCC, a highly-talented
mostly amateur choir, ranges from Renaissance masters to newly commissioned works, from classical
styles to Broadway and vocal jazz, and from masterworks for choir and orchestra, to choral gems for unaccompanied voices .
In addition to its regular four-concert series, the GCC has performed in numer-ous festivals, including the Llangollen International Eisteddfod (Wales), Luminato Festival, Toronto International Choral Festival, Guelph Spring Festival, and festivals in Austria and the Czech Republic . Exciting collaborations have included working with Dancetheatre David Earle; professional, regional and community choirs; and regional orchestras from Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo and London . Many of our choral/orchestral concerts in the past 18 years have been accompanied by period instrument specialists with repertoire ranging from Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 to Brahms’ Requiem, and many works by Bach and Handel .
The GCC has toured in England, Wales, Ireland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Holland, Germany, Sweden and Denmark . A frequent prize winner in the CBC National Competition for Amateur Choirs, it has been broadcast on CBC Radio and on BBC Wales . Recordings include Noel, On Christmas Night, Songs of the New World, Good Cheare: Christmas Celebrations Old and New, Christmas in the Royal City, Remember, and Carols of the Bells (December 2017), in collaboration with bell choir Bells Ablaze .
Gerald Neufeld has been Conductor and Artistic Director of the Guelph Chamber Choir since its founding in 1980 . Please refer to the Program section on page 7 for a more complete biography .
Alison MacNeill is a graduate of the University of Guelph music program, and of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto . Born in Guelph, she returned to the area to live and work following graduate work at the University of Western Ontario, where she studied piano and theory with Ronald Turini and Richard Parks .
Alison is active as an accompanist and chamber musician, and has been, at various times through the years, pianist for the University of Guelph Choir, the Elora Festival Singers, the Guelph Youth Singers, and the Rainbow Chorus of Waterloo-Wellington, as well as with many other ensembles and soloists . She maintains a large teaching studio and is the Director of Music Ministry at Harcourt Memorial United Church . She has been the accompanist for the Chamber Choir for much of its existence, performing and touring with the ensemble .
After more than 20 years of dedicated service to the Guelph Chamber Choir, Patricia Eton-Neufeld retired from her position as GCC Administrator . Pat’s time and effort has contributed enormously to the Choir’s success over that lengthy period . Pat has been honoured by her community (i .e ., as a YWCA “Woman of Dis-tinction”) for her efforts to make Guelph a better place to live on many fronts. The GCC wishes her all the best for her “retirement” .
