I reported in 2010 on how it began with the snow dominating everything, little did I knowthat it would end the same way; what a year! Two fully fledged white Christmases, I feel aBing Crosby rendition coming on. Music Theory for Young Musicians

A Tutor for Electronic Keyboard Nancy LittenKeyed UP is an exciting and innovative approach to teaching and learning the electronic keyboard. NancyLitten carefully guides the student through a series of well-known and catchy melodies and adds learningconcepts along the way. So the student simply enjoys the journey whilst acquiring new skills - as Nancyputs it in the preface.

“It has been discovered that the main reason why pupils discontinue lessons is because of a lack of opportunity to play with others. It is assumed that if they are good at a skill they will enjoy it. Modern research has discovered that the reverse is more likely; if they enjoy something they will strive to become good at it.”Each book includes an MP3 CD with tracks for ‘playing-along’ to for home practise, and the teacher’sbook exclusive to the pre-initial stage, plus the initial and Grade 1 books include teacher and ensembleaccompaniments, so now every student gets the chance to play with a group.

Ever since J.S. Bach’s ‘The Well-Tempered Clavier’ appeared (1722) the foundation of Western harmonyhas been rooted in the circle of fifths. This remarkable symmetry is the bedrock of all classical music fromthe Baroque until at least the First World War and continues to be influential to this day.

It is the basis of popular styles, musical theatre, jazz and rock, not least because much instrument design is based upon its principles.Even folk and world music, who once evaded its gaze, have fallen under its spell in recent reincarnations either through‘harmonisations’ or popular crossovers.

Every piano student should have the theory under their fingers and be able to ‘wander’ round the circle when sitting at theirinstrument. It provides a basic understanding that will underpin much of the music they will play; allow them to comprehend thecompositional process; relate harmonically to structures like Sonata, Rondo, Fugue, Minuet & Trio, Da Capo and so on. It will facilitatememory, improvisation, composition, transposition, performance, harmonic awareness and so much more. As with most theoreticalideas, the importance lies not in the knowledge, but in its practical use. With this in mind, I teach my students to ‘play’ round the circleby first introducing it - stepping up in perfect fifths from the lowest C on the piano - and then using the following techniques.

1. Anti-Clockwise: The Circle of Fourths. This is much the easier of the processes to grasp, as it requires only the addition of the new accidental, which creates a dominant 7th chord to be resolved in the ‘new’ key. I teach this after they have mastered Bach’s Prelude in C (from where a discussion of the circle can easily arise) and I impose a pattern derived from Bach’s original, but definitely NO score, although the chart above is permissible. I also ask that they ‘talk’ their way round the circle in a Sat Nav (GPS) voice; C major add Seventh resolves to F Major; F Major add seventh resolves to Bb major and so on…

The Circle of Fifths

Page 7: Alfred Rendezvous Summer 2011

piano rendezvous | spring/summer 2011 | 07

This process also consolidates the principle of ‘inversions’ and, in my experience, the student who completes this journey, arrivingback at the home key of C major, has done something quite remarkable usually revealing this in a visible show of wonderment at theirachievement. Thus the ‘science’ and the magic of music becomes something of interest and we are on the way to making a musician.

After this step, the student can vary the texture and inversions of the exercise; perhaps add waltz tempo with blocked chords; or anAlberti bass with a right-hand melody. These new journeys then become starting points for explorations of tonal relationships andpiano styles which can be referred to in the context of the more advanced repertoire they are about to encounter.

2. Clockwise: The Circle of Fifths and the ii V I jazz ‘turnaround’ This is a more difficult exercise, but can be approached in a similar way. Usually for students I allow a gap of a few months (perhaps a graded exam) between these two stages, unless the student is particularly enthusiastic (or brilliant!). Concomitant with this process is the opportunity to teach the ii V I turnaround so familiar to jazz in all keys! This ‘gateway’ to a popular music style allows the student to see that ALL tonal music(s) obeys the same fundamental laws and that their differences are often concerned with style, technique, extension, modality and context.

In the example below, again using Bach’s template, I move the student through the chord sequence I vi II7 V however, using the supertonic II7 as a Dominant Seventh I add the extra accidental required to move round the circle. The vi then becomes chord ii in the target key and the II7 becomes V7. For an extra ‘jazzy’ effect, try adding sevenths to the ii (formerly vi) chord, and even a major 7th to the I chords for that cocktail hour feel!

Once again the student should try to achieve this without written music, so they ‘feel’ their way around the keyboard, hearing thetonal movement as it forms beneath their fingers. Then go on to experiment with techniques and styles. Also, once you haveachieved the modulation to the dominant, you can return quickly to the tonic using the exercise 1 example above and thus we havewheels within circles….

Originally founded to allow pianoteachers to buy single sheets and thelatest new music by Alfred’s favouriteauthors, the Sheet Music Club (SMC)is now entering its 12th year!

A steadfast and loyal membership has seen many changes in thebreadth of repertoire we publish. From those early days whereMartha Mier, Catherine Rollin and Dennis Alexander, dominatedthe lists, we now have the opportunity to offer Easy piano, Big-Note and Five Finger arrangements by Dan Coates, Carol Matzand Tom Gerou respectively, of music from; movies like HarryPotter, Lord of The Rings; Pop artists like Michael Jackson; Worldmedia, like Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft, andmany more, so your students really get to play the music theyenjoy. Of course we continue to include music from Martha,Dennis and Catherine as they still produce such fine pieces idealfor our students.

The virtues of being a member are numerous, but include; threemailings of music per year, to at least the value of doublemembership costs; first look at new music some of which can bepurchased at introductory prices; an opportunity to review backcatalogue items including many old favourites which can then bepurchased at premium prices. You will also receive email updatesthroughout the year alerting you to any events or new productreleases that might be of interest. All this for just £35 per year! Ifnothing else the students will love you for it, because when theirpeers rise to play their latest graded exam piece at the schoolrecital, your students will produce a unique and wonderfulexperience for their audiences making them the envy of the hall, which will stimulate and inspire them to practise even harder!
