YMBTAThe YMBTA project seeks to hybridize two long-standing sys- tems- the YMCA and the MBTA- in order to produce a unique urban hub. While the program requirements are well distributed between YMCA and MBTA, the athletic program overwhelms the space, larger than both the transit and com-munity programs com- bined; In fact, the footprint of the running track alone nearly falls off the site. Rather than seeing this as problematic, this project looks at these large athletic zones as an instrumen-tal part of the sought after hybridization. First, the running track is expanded to literally fill the site as the remaining program is placed inside. The other three large athletic zones are pressed into the ground along the center of the site, forming a backbone of sorts. From here, the track lanes lose their typical even divisions. Lanes are compressed and expanded, twisted and spread apart. These operations distort the track into spaces that accommodate each program.Ultimately, the transit and community spaces straddle the athletic zones creating a constant spectacle for both the people inside the space and those on the street, as it breaches the site’s perimeter.

THE BRICK HOUSEA new brick house designed for Philip Johnson’s Glass House campus in New Canaan, Conneti-cut. The project was the end result of a semester-long inquiry into masonry construction meth-ods.

MIT BOATHOUSEDespite their many differences, the existing boathouses on the Charles could all be classified as protrusions that obstruct the public space between the city and river. This project operates as a critique of these existing boathouses, not only serving the MIT crew team, but the MIT community and the public at large. The sparse program takes advantage of the entire length of the site, sitting flush with the existing ground at the seam where old and new meet. From below, the public “deck” operates as a canopy that clusters, organizes, and houses the boathouse programs. From above, the new structure will be read as an extension or outgrowth of the land--expanding the existing pedestrian walkway into a public plaza that will double as a large viewing deck during events.
KOLLEGIUMkollegium 1kä-’le-ge- m, a Danish student housing unit
This is a design for a single 125 m3 unit of student housing. While the project takes the organization of the entire kollegium complex into consideration, the primary focus remains on the individual unit. Staying within the 125 m3 parameters, I chose to morph the allotted 5mx5mx5m cube in order to optimize the space for human scale and activity. The design pays careful attention to the separation of public and private space. Privacy increases as the user moves away from common kollegium space and toward the river.

CODE.FORM_SPACEBorn out of a workshop on parametric tools and design co-taught at the University of Puerto Rico by myself and Luisel Zayas, Code.Form_Space produced its first installation. The pavilion consisted of a thousand hand-made plastic modules threaded over a structural system of high-tensioned ropes. Locat-ed on the corner of Cerra and Aurora Street in Santurce, Puerto Rico, the installation became a central feature of 2014’s Santurce Es Ley, an annual street art festival that brings together artists from around the world.

SKATE VISUALIZATONAn experimental application I developed in order to try to visualize patterns and tendencies of different skaters. Using a custom skateboard I designed with a slot for embedding an iPhone, the application taps into the phone’s built-in acceleromter and streams movement data in visual form to produce a unique an-imation each time it is used.

IMAGE MUSICThis project is an exploration into the indirect translation between senses.Here, I’ve devised a series of rules to translate images into music/sound.
The user drags and drops an image into the program. A sampler moving from left to right, up to down will begin reading the image as a sequence of tones, looping back to the top of the image each time it reaches the bottom. The tone has 3 determining variables: the average BRIGHTNESS of the sample determines the OCTAVE, the average HUE of the sample determines the letter of the NOTE, and the average SATURATION of the sample determines whether the note is b / REGULAR / #.
The user can alter the image in 2 ways: STAMP and COLOR. In STAMP MODE the user samples from one portion of the image by typing “s”. When the mouse is held down and dragged, the pixels around it will be colored over (Alpha=150) by pixels from the sample location. In COLOR MODE, the user samples a single color from one portion of the image by typing “c.” Now when the mouse is held down and dragged, the pixels around it will be colored over (Alpha=150) with that sample color.
Ultimately, editing the image alters the sound and editing the sound alters the image. The user has the ability to transform both image and sound simultaneously and in the process, produce unexpected/interesting new things.

6939 AD“6939 A.D.” shows the potential devastating effects of rising sea levels on the physical state of the country and on the movement of large populations over time. Using laser cut wood, we created a 3-D contour map of the United States and flooded it with dyed water to represent this ecological threat.
