BACKGROUND• Treaty originally opened for US, UK, and USSR on January 27 th 1967.
• Treaty came into effect on October 10 th 1967.

• The 60s were a time of trial and error in attempts to land on the Moon.
• With space-faring technology both sides believed the other could gain leverage in nuclear advances
• At the time of the creation and ratification of the Outer Space Treaty, the Space Race was in full swing
