Board of Directors
www.saskatoonfurniture.ca
On behalf of the Board of Directors, the staff and
myself, I would like to extend to you and your families a wonderful Holiday Season, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
At this time of year when our hearts are filled with the love of family and friends, our thoughts turn to the searching families in Canada and their missing loved ones. For grieving and searching families, we understand that this time of year can be especially difficult. We keep them in our thoughts and in our hearts. We hope cherished memories will provide some comfort and hope during the holiday season and throughout the year.
Child Find Saskatchewan has met with many changes and challenges in 2015. In the fall we had the assistance of our School Resource Officers as they visited the schools in the three major cities with our I.D. Clinics and our Alert Youth programs. It is the goal of these programs to protect our children and youth, keeping them safe, offering solutions, alternatives and to prevent the urge to run away. We received a much appreciated grant from Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice for which we are very grateful. One more change with Child Find is the expansion of our services to help locate missing persons.
This year marked another milestone in our organization. With the assistance of Darrell Nordstrom from Assante Wealth Management (1st Avenue), we held our first Charity Breakfast in May. Invited to speak at our first charity breakfast was a father whose 10 year old son was abducted. This triggered our first AMBER Alert in the province. His son was held captive for 50 hours before he was able to escape. The father shared his story on how this forever changed their lives and had lasting effects on the entire community. Since our event was a great success, we decided to replace the Green Ribbon Gala with the Charity Breakfast. In 2016 our Charity Breakfast will be held on May 25th, which is National and International Missing Children’s Day. Please mark your calendars and join us for our Second Annual Child Find Charity
Breakfast. For more information please call the Child Find office at 306 955 0070.
In this edition you will find a story of the heartbreak and determination of one Mother and her never ending search for her missing daughter—“A Mother’s Grief”.
Child Find supports families of Missing Persons through our Connecting Family Program. We also continue to work as a member of the Provincial Partnership Committee on Missing Persons.
We are committed to working relentlessly towards our mission, to ensure our communities are a safe place for our children and youth.
A heartfelt Thank you goes out to our advertisers, sponsors and our volunteers. Your continued support is extremely important to the successful operation of the organization. Child Find operates mainly on donations, the support from the people of Saskatchewan and our dedicated volunteers who deliver our programs and services at no cost to our searching families and the general public.
Child Find believes “A Missing Child is Everyone’s Responsibility”, “All children and youth have a right to be safe”.

A rthritis is the leading cause of long-term disability in Canada, with osteoarthritis being the most common form of the disease. It is estimated that 14.2 per cent of
Canadians suffer from osteoarthritis.
“Currently, we do not manage this disease well at all,” said Arash Panahifar, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Saskatchewan, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. “Unfortunately, the best we can do for these patients is to treat the symptoms with pain killers and watch as the entire cartilage thickness is degraded and the joint cannot function any longer.”
At times, the joints can be replaced through surgery, but the goal is prevention.
“A major problem with osteoarthritis is its late diagnosis, when the disease is so advanced that we can’t do anything to stop it.”
Panahifar, along with Canadian Light Source, University of Alberta, and U of S scientists, are trying to diagnose osteoarthritis at its earliest stages using unique three-dimensional synchrotron imaging techniques on the CLS biomedical imaging and therapy beamline (BMIT).
He said that while there are some two-dimensional techniques that can also detect the osteoarthritis markers in bone, to fully understand the mechanisms of the disease, we need to map the bone and changes in its structure using a 3D map on BMIT.
To better understand the cause(s) of osteoarthritis, Panahifar and colleagues used a “tracer” of strontium to label early changes that were happening in the knee joints that were developing osteoarthritis. When they looked at bone in the stunning details available from BMIT, the healthy subjects looked very different to those with osteoarthritis. The tracer was distributed uniformly in honey-comb like structure of healthy bone, while unhealthy subjects showed pathological changes occurring in the bone microstructure. The unhealthy bones showed the tracer in the areas directly beneath the cartilage as well as at bone margins (bone spurs), marking active bone turnover in those regions as the disease was progressing.
Those bone spurs grow rapidly and eventually limit the normal movement of the joint, leading to disability and pain.
Panahifar thinks the techniques he has helped develop can help pharmaceutical companies to design effective drugs for the treatment of osteoarthritis. “This technique can also be used for research into other bone diseases, like bone cancers and metastasis,” he said.
“I would like to make a difference in the way bone diseases are diagnosed and treated, and to develop methods for novel therapeutic approaches, potentially at the Canadian Light Source.”
arash Panahifar, a post-doctoral fellow at the university of Saskatchewan, Department of anatomy and Cell Biology, has
helped develop unique imaging techniques to identify the early signs of osteoarthritis.

• Teachyourchildrentheirfullname, andyourfullname.Ifatallpossible, have them memorize your cell number.
• Take a business card of the hotel or resort you are staying at
and write your name and number on the back. Have each child carry it in their pocket so authorities will know where to contact you should the child become lost.
• Do not let your children go into restrooms alone. Accompany
them at all times. • Conditions at hotels and other accommodations may not
be as safe as you’d expect. Carefully inspect for things like exposed wiring, pest poisons, paint chips, out-dated playpens or cribs and inadequate stairway or balcony railings.
• Have an If I Get Lost Plan in place so that your child knows what
to do. Choose a landmark to meet at if you get separated and tell them not to go with anybody to another location.
• Make two copies of all travel documents such as passports,
insurance/health cards, emergency medical numbers, credit cards and itinerary. Email a copy to yourself at an accessible email address and leave a copy back home with a friend or relative.
• When visiting parks or museums, dress your kids in bright colours and snap a quick photo of them at the start of the day. They will be much easier to spot in a crowd and a photo will be of assistance should they get lost.
• If possible, have one adult take responsibility for one child and
discuss who is looking after whom. • If your kids are travelling out of the country without you,
your spouse or your ex-spouse or with grandparents, or on their own, it is strongly recommended that you have an official document stating that this is permissible. Visit travel.gc.ca and click on “Recommended Consent Letter For Children Travelling Abroad” for more information.
• Reassure your children that if they ever become lost or taken,
you will look for them until they are found.
• When on vacation, keep your child’s fingerprints, and a current photograph in a safe accessible place. Call Child Find at 306.955.0070 or TF at 1.800.513.FIND (3463) for information on an All About Me ID Clinic in your area.

Bon Voyage
If you’re planning to pack up the kids and escape the cold grip of a Saskatchewan winter, we suggest you have a look at our Child Safety Travel Check List before you head to the airport.
Making vacation memories with our kids is truly one of life’s treasures, however, travelling with little ones changes the game completely, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. Child Find Saskatchewan spoke with Barb Crowe, President of Ixtapa Travel and her advice is to think ahead and take preventative measures before you leave home. She says that planning is key and recommends the following tips to help ensure your trip is as enjoyable and safe as possible.

Manitou Beach tourism remains strong despite high water
M any people around the world know about the Dead Sea in Israel, but did you know you can find a similar body of water right here
in Saskatchewan? Located near Watrous, between Saskatoon and Regina, Little Manitou Lake is a unique mineral lake where its healing water has been known to be good for the Body, Mind, and Soul.
Anchored by Manitou Springs Hotel and Mineral Spa (2014 Tourism Business of the Year in Saskatchewan) you will also find unique attractions such as Danceland with the horsetail dance floor, one of Saskatchewan’s largest regional park campgrounds, and one of Saskatchewan’s last remaining drive-in movie theatres.
Before the depression, early settlers used to flock to the lake with the unsinkable water – at one time rivaling Banff as a top destination in western Canada. Today, the area sees between 150,000-200,000 annual visitors. Recent work by the Watrous Manitou Marketing Group, the local tourism marketing organization, people are rediscovering this unique jewel on the prairie.
What makes the lake different than most in Saskatchewan is that it is a closed basin – no rivers flow in or out of it. This keeps the mineral in the lake but also creates challenges during wet years as we have seen in Saskatchewan recently. Other fresh bodies of water in the area are finding their way into the lake, further diluting it.
With the assistance of the Resort Village of Manitou Beach, the Provincial Government, and the Water Security Agency, berms were built along the shoreline in 2011 to help keep the water back from important infrastructure. Unfortunately, the rain and snow continued to fall and the water has kept rising. A recent petition was developed to lobby the Provincial Government to implement a Water Diversion Project to keep fresh water out of the lake. This would allow a better chance for evaporation to take place, lake levels to recede, and the mineral composition of the lake to return to normal levels.
Despite the recent struggle with water, visitors continue to come to the area. In 2015, the area hosted the RCMP Musical Ride and Saskatchewan’s first Chainsaw Carving Competition. The Manitou & District Regional Park has recently expanded their campground and the Manitou Beach Golf Course has seen high volumes of visitors throughout the summer.
The area’s current tag line is Unsinkable Watrous Manitou. This has two meanings – one is the obvious – a saline lake that you can simply float in. The other is a bit stronger for the community, no matter the struggles, the Great Depression or high water levels, this community of 2500 people will continue to thrive and be a leading destination to visitors to Saskatchewan.

M any doctors call human parasites the “silent killers” affecting 8 of 10 Americans and they are almost always associated with candida and yeast infections.
In recent medical studies it has been estimated that 85% of the North American adult population has at least one form of parasite living in their bodies. Some authorities feel this figure may be as high as 95%.”
Here is a quote from Dr. Ross Anderson, one of Americas foremost parasitic infection specialists.
“ I believe the single most undiagnosed health challenge in the history of the human race is parasites. I realize that is a pretty brave statement, but it is based on my 20 years of experience with more than 20,000 patients.”
The average person over 40 has anywhere between 5 to 25 pounds of build-up in their colon. Parasites of all sizes thrive in this indisposed residue of fecal matter, slowly but surely toxifying the whole body.
Well here are a few ways, increased international travel, contaminated water supplies, swimming in contaminated lakes and streams, your pets or other peoples pets, food supplies, such as pork, processed meats, uncooked meats, chicken, lamb, and even fish may contain human parasites to name a few.
Humans can play host for over 100 different species of human parasites that can infect not just the digestive system, but the lungs, liver, muscles and joints, the throat, brain, blood, skin, and even the eyes. They can range from microscopic to several feet long like the tapeworm.
Parasites that live inside the human body feed off of cells, food, and supplements. Parasites enter the body through the mouth, nose, and skin. Parasites can also move into the organs and systems of the body. If you are having issues with an organ and not able to find the cause a parasite cleanse may help you.
Humans can contract parasites through the following:
• contaminated fruits and vegetables• barefoot contact with sand or soil• gardening without gloves• eating raw or rare meat• pets• mosquito bites• unclean water and public pools• changing diapers• contact with others with parasites
Some symptoms of parasite infestation are:
• diarrhea or constipation• digestive complaints such as gas, bloating, or cramps• IBS• overall fatigue• joint pain• teeth grinding (parasites affect the nervous system)• prostatitis• rectal itching• ravenous appetite or loss of appetite• skin problems, rashes and granulomas (tumour-like masses
that encase parasites)
ProtocolFight parasite infestationwith a cleanse.
ParaGONE is a patented broad spectrum anti-parasitic, anti-mi-crobial, and anti-fungal herbal cleansing program designed to destroy parasites throughout the body. Anti-parasitic herbs rid the body of parasites in 2 different ways; One group of herbs works by paralyzing the organism directly, allowing the body to remove it through the regular channels of elimination. Another group of herbs works by directly destroying the organism. ParaGONE is a formulation for cleansing parasites from the body, but is also powerful enough to eliminate yeast (candida), as candida often co-exists with parasites. Along with a parasite cleanse I would recommend including a high potency probiotic, as well as hydrochloric acid to increase stomach acid to reduce infestation through ingestion.

Immigrant Access Fund Canada (IAF) is a micro finance organization that helps immigrants pay for licensing and training that they need to get back into their professional
fields in Canada. IAF provides loans of up to $10,000 to support the process of foreign credential recognition in Canada.
IAF Alberta emerged in 2003 as a grassroots organization. It was started in Calgary and led by Dr. Maria Eriksen who wanted to help newcomers to Canada as they faced employment barriers. Many newcomers were faced with underemployment or were working in unrelated areas due to not being able to utilize their skills and experience. A micro loan program was developed that focused on helping immigrants with the financial hurdles involved in achieving licensing and training to work in their fields. IAF’s aim is to see immigrants being able to use their expertise to contribute to the economic and social success of Canada. IAF Saskatchewan emerged in 2012 and in 2015 was amalgamated with the Alberta offices to create Immigrant Access Fund Canada.
IAF Canada micro loans are character based loans. We support people who are trustworthy and of good character who need financial support to get back into their fields in Canada. They differ from bank loans because we do not require that applicants be employed (depends on circumstances), have a credit history or have collateral. Since inception to September 2015, IAF has provided 2078 loans totaling $13,196,095.
A study was completed by Dr. J.C. Herbert Emery of the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary evaluating the income and tax yield outcomes of our Alberta clients. Dr. Emery found that for every public funding dollar that is used to cover the costs of providing IAF loans, there is a return of over $15 in additional income for society. It also provides approximately $3 in additional tax for the federal and provincial treasuries in just the first year after the loan recipient completes their learning plan. According to the study, “The return on investment is particularly high because this one time expenditure yields long term benefits.” By supporting and investing in the skills and abilities of newcomers, our clients are able to expand their economic and social capacity.
IAF Canada’s operates under five non-negotiable values; accessibility, equitability, sustainability, integrity and relevancy. These values shape the organization and staff. IAF Canada has offices in Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Toronto but serving all the provinces except Quebec. A micro loan program was developed that focused on helping immigrants with the financial hurdles involved in achieving licensing and training to work in their fields. IAF’s aim is to see immigrants being able to use their expertise to contribute to the economic and social success of Canada.

H eartbreak and grief is something we all experience in our lives
at one time or another, but losing a child is a parent’s worst nightmare. Not knowing what has happened to your child is unbearable. For every parent I have talked to the story is a little different and each handle that heartache in their own unique way.
I would like to tell you about, Leona, a searching mother from British Columbia. Her daughter, Katelyn, was only 15 years of age when she went missing 8 years ago. Each year her mother travels to Saskatchewan to search for any clue that might help her find out what happened to her daughter.
Leona has made multiple visits to the area where her precious daughter Katelyn went missing. Over these last tortuous 8 years, she has kept in contact with investigative officers, enlisted a team of volunteers in the area where Katelyn was last seen, saved money to pay for transportation to the Radisson area, and has suffered serious health related issues in her quest to find justice for Katelyn. What fuels this grieving mother is her sheer determination, drive and the love for her daughter.
Katelyn had been living in the Radisson area when she went missing in 2007. This year, as Leona searched again in Saskatchewan, she was determined to keep shining a light on Katelyn’s case. She told me she talked to people in Radisson, Mayfair, Alticane and Hafford area, leaving our Child Find posters of Katelyn with them, in hopes that someone might remember when and where they last saw Katelyn.
Leona is so grateful for all the kindness and the support she received during her search again this year. To all the volunteers who assisted Leona in the search, she would like you to know how thankful she is for your help. Katelyn’s case is still an open and active case with the RCMP Historical Case Unit.
We at Child Find will never stop looking and assisting parents until there is some resolution to the case. That is why, as you look at our posters, you will notice we are still posting our cold cases. We distribute pictures of our missing persons in our Alert magazine, in weekly newspapers throughout Saskatchewan, on our web site and on social media. Next time you see one of our posters or a picture on social media, please take a good look. Should you recognize someone from the poster that you may have seen recently, call us at 306 955 0070. We operate a 24/7/365 Crisis Line at 1 800 513 3463 to assist in our search for missing persons. Any help you can give us would be appreciated.

Products Designed by ExpertsMore than 30 years of knowledge helps make our products the highest quality bird feeding supplies on the market.
Trusted Local AdviceOur goal is to help you better enjoy this wonderful hobby by providing the best local advice and bird feeding products to meet your needs. We want you to have the best bird feeding experience possible. After all, it’s the most relaxing, fulfilling, educa-tional and exciting hobby that anyone, young or old, can enjoy.
The Best Bird Food In TownRegardless of the season, birds need foods high in protein and fat. These provide extra energy and help birds during nesting, rais-ing their young and molting their feathers in the spring and summer. These foods, along with stored body fat, are the primary energy supply that fuels a bird throughout fall migration and during long, cold winter
nights. We can help you attract the most variety of birds with our No-mess Blends. Our exclusive ‘Birda-cious Bark Butter’ has attracted 127 different bird species and is also available in bricks, bits and plugs. We also have
a large selection of tidy and convenient bird seed cylinders and suet.
The Largest Selection of Bird FeedersWe offer ‘Lifetime Guarantee’ Tube Feeders, Finch Feeders, Hopper Feeders, Fly-Thru
Feeders, Platform Feeders, Window Feeders, Eco-Clean Feeders, Dinner Bell Feeders, Cylinder Feeders, High Perch Humming-bird Nectar Feeders, Oriole Feeders, Suet Feeders, Tail Prop Feeders, Chickadee Only Feeders, Squirrel Proof Feeders and cages to allow small birds.
The Advanced Pole System (APS)Our Patented Advanced Pole System (APS) is the foundation for successfully attract-ing birds to your backyard. Comprised of interchangeable hardware, the APS lets you create and change your customized setup in minutes. All parts are powder-coated to prevent rusting and can also be used for bird houses, hanging plants and more.
All Around Nesting CareWBU Nesting boxes are designed to have the dimensions and features that appeal to specific bird species. Many of our bird houses are locally made with recycled wood materials.
The Importance of WaterWhether they’re feeder visitors or not, birds need water. Offering a reliable source of water is probably the simplest and most important step you can take to increase the
number of birds in your yard. Birds need water for drinking and also keeping their feathers clean. When it’s hot, birds will use birdbaths to keep cool and replenish fluids. In winter, clean feathers help birds stay warm. We offer a variety of bird baths for all seasons.
We also specialize in the following nature products:• Window Alerts (prevent bird collisions)• Bat Houses• Garden Accents• Great selection of Nature Books and
