THE OPENING // 5

And spring is here, or so they say. Well, it was definitely summer season in Zambia. We averaged 35 degrees. I recently returned from a site visit to Zambia, Africa and am pleased to say that it was an utterly remarkable trip. It is one of the safest countries in Africa to visit and the incredible Royal Livingstone Hotel where we were hosted lived up to the hype. It is the perfect location from which to experience this amazing country. Situated on the Zambian side of the Victoria Waterfalls, this hotel is utterly surrounded by natural beauty. It was my first time experiencing the Victoria Waterfalls, and everything you have heard is true….it is absolutely magnificent. The first night I only realized around 19:00…during my second glass of wine…that I was actually sitting next to THE Victoria Waterfalls; one of the most awe inspiring natural wonders I have ever experienced. Just shows that everyone is entitled to the odd blonde moment…and yes, most of us in The Aleit Group offices, do colour.

Johnny and I achieved what we set out – a site inspection for a wedding we are coordinating at the Royal Livingstone in January for an absolutely inspiring couple from Australia. After twelve meetings over the two days, we are now beyond excited; it is most definitely going to be the African wedding of the year!

Back home we are heading full steam ahead into the busy season. Every day is a flurry of flower mocks, site inspections and signing of new bookings. I am thrilled to say that we are taking the Johannesburg market by storm - not only on the events side but also weddings…we have some extraordinary weddings coming up in Johannesburg over the next few months. This influx of Johannesburg weddings is certainly brought on by our Johannesburg office, which is doing exceptionally well, so is our Cape Town office. Our head office in Stellenbosch however still remains the heart of the company.

As far as the Academy, I am so proud to announce that we are entering into a new partnership with ICA and CATHSETA which is a very exciting step for the Academy. Intake for 2013 is also going incredibly well and we look forward to welcoming all of the new faces next year.

THE OPENING Sixteenth Edition – October 2012

We have hosted some amazing events at my very own home lately. Early in October I hosted an art exhibition there with four amazing artists, Marieke Kruger, Joubert Stander, John Bauer and Kurt Daniel. It was a magical evening with old and new friends coming together to experience and appreciate the arts. My house has also been chosen as a preferred location for film shoots and in December I will be hosting a Christmas Market there…watch this space for more updates on all of these exhilarating developments.

A not-to-be-missed event on the South African calendar is most certainly Kamers Vol Geskenke. At first it was only held in Cape Town and Irene, but now it also visits Bloemfontein once a year. It most certainly is THE décor event of the year and The Aleit Group is tremendously proud to be in association with them. The event runs from 21 to 27 October at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West, be sure to come by if you are in the area, it is an event not to be missed.

Our partnership with De Kat magazine and De Kat TV is going extremely well. The positive reviews of me as lifestyle editor and presenter, are streaming in and we are geared up to film the last few segments before this season of De Kat TV takes a break. Be sure not to miss it for the very best in décor and fashion tips as well as a look at some of the Mother City’s most exclusive events. I am happy to say that I have found my feet as a presenter and am having a fantastic time doing it.

In conclusion I am able to share a piece of my pride and joy with you, Aleit Interior will soon be launching as we kick off with a massive Cape Town interior project, in association with Kojabu Designs. Not to worry, all will be revealed in due course.

I hope you enjoy the sixteenth edition of our newsletter as much as we enjoyed putting it together. It is such a blessing to be able to share our world.

Much love.

Having grown up in an artistic environment, design comes naturally to Christo. His intuition and creativity is part of what makes him an ideal fit at A-design. Having worked with both local and international clients, Christo successfully manages to integrate the client’s ideas with modern day trends. His priceless experience comes from working with a number of successful companies, including French champagne brands, a dental practice in England, wine estates and even a furniture company. Inspired by Christo’s unique talent, together Aleit Swanepoel and Christo started what is now the well-established company A-design.

Page 7: Aleit Group Magazine Sixteenth Edition

How did you get into design?

It was a natural progression for me really as my father is also in the design and packaging industry. Initially I was encouraged not to go into the same industry, so I started studying engineering. After a year I got bored of it and wanted to be more creative so started on the design side. I have always been interested in exploring my creative side and it has always formed a massive part of my life. From a young age I already knew my way around most design programs as I was always helping out my dad in holidays - I have more design time in me than most people my age!

What interesting projects are you currently working on?

At this stage we are working on a project with Evo Bikes which is really cool! My two biggest personal interests are obviously design and then also cycling – so this project is two exciting worlds coming together in one for me. It is still at the beginning stages but has great potential for growth as e-commerce is becoming a big industry in SA.

We have also started a Travel project with a new client which affiliates with the Travel industry. It creates an opportunity for amazing deals, but again what is most exciting is the potential for growth.

The other intresting project is the Franschhoek Wine Tram, – it is this wine tour that you go on a tram and you don’t have to drive, its starting in a few months time actually When we started A-Design we worked on a lot of small projects for individuals starting a business, i.e. a flower shop, brewery, etc. Now we are starting to work with bigger companies and more complex projects, which produce more rewards as well.

The most satisfaction comes from the small guys though. People that come to us with an idea or a product and we help them to establish the brand and succesfully grow their business.

So you are recently engaged – how did you pop the question?

I am quite a shy guy so bear with me... I don’t plan ahead ever so two weeks before our holiday I decided “Hey, let’s get engaged”! I had no plans

CHRISTO TOUAwhatsoever though... I decided to book one night away and from there on we winged it and ended up in the Baviaanskloof, near Patensie, inland somewhere... It was very cool and we camped and just asked around as to where to go - someone told us to drive another 500kms up which was a bit further than we expected to go but so worth it!! I was very nervous – I am a nervous guy… Eveleen didn’t expect it at all! I did check with her parrents the week before via a Skype call as they stay in England. I asked her next to a little stream in the mountains down on one knee. It was very romantic in our own way. The date is set for next year sometime – very exciting!

What has been your favourite project to date?

I am so involved in all our projects though that every single one swallows me whole and becomes my favourite. If I had to choose one it would have to be working with The Aleit Group itself and helping to build our own brand. We did a revamp of the whole brand in the end of last year. It posed a massive chalange. Taking something that is already working and improving on that. I am very proud in the way it turned out.

Where is A-Design going to be in three years?

IIt is now two and half years old officially and started with approximately five clients and now we have dealt with over fifty since then!! The growth has been insane! So in three years we hope to triple this but sustaining 50% of the growth would be awesome. However that said, the team is amazing and really talented. The strength and synergy is great and we constantly have five or six projects going at the same time so a massive part of my job is to ensure that the management thereof is good. We have a strong team of four people at this stage – my idea from the beginning was to appoint one new person a year and we are sticking to that and more! I really couldn’t do it without the team!!

Your creativity is constantly in demand, what do you to just chill out?

Spending time with friends and family – there is not much of that but there is hoping!I always try to make time to spend with Eveleen, my fiancée. Arbitury things done together always turn into some sort of adventure. Other than that I am an avid mountain biker, anything active and outdoors excites me.

How did you meet?

I was still studying and he was in Cape Town for business.

Your best moment of the day?

Bride: Exchanging vows in front of family and friends and putting the bling on his finger.

Groom: Seeing my wife entering the venue on a horse and carriage and walking up to the ceremony area. It was like seeing her for the first time…

Your Aleit Group experience.

Wow! I don’t know where to start to thank you for organising such a wonderful wedding day for us. You’ve given us the dream wedding we never knew we wanted. We had the most magical day with memories to last a lifetime. Our friends and family have not stopped talking about our special day and have all said it’s been a highlight of the year. Some even said that it was not a wedding, but an experience! You really got everything right and that is certainly down to your fantastic planning, ideas, professionalism and support. We know how hard you worked on it and we greatly appreciate everything.

Tell us more about the honeymoon.

We did not go away for honeymoon, we moved into our newly built house. Advice to other couples tying the knot soon.

Hire a wedding planner. It is most important thing to do at this time. They are there to help YOU design your big day and ensure that YOUR big day is everything you dreamed of and more and that you have a stress-free experience.

How did you meet?

We first met on holiday through a group of mutual friends in Inhambane, Mozambique. We had a brilliant holiday, followed by a multitude of “Mozambique Holiday Reunions” and started dating about a month later. Lots of good times, we got on really well and continue to have lots of fun together. How did he propose?

We were moving from Johannesburg to Melbourne for a job opportunity and things were a bit chaotic. We decided to go away to The Oysterbox Hotel in Umhlanga for the weekend and Thinus thought that it would be a great opportunity to propose before we left for Australia. We went for an early morning run along the beach and he proposed then. I was elated!

How did you experience your wedding day?

We had the most incredible day from the time we woke up, spending the morning with our closest friends and family members; to the ceremony where the celebrations started, to post-ceremony drinks and finally the reception where we danced until the very end. Our guests couldn’t stop telling us how much fun they had and that was all we hoped for, so all round the day was a success. Your best moment of the day?

Thinus: Seeing Lauren coming down the aisle. She looked absolutely beautiful and she was glowing and had the biggest smile on her face. I felt ecstatic!

Lauren: Arriving at the ceremony, seeing Thinus smiling and waiting for me and all our family and friends (some of whom we hadn’t seen in over a year). It was the most incredible feeling.

Something nice about us.

We owe the success of our day to Johnny, Aleit and the rest of the Aleit team. Living abroad meant that it would have made it difficult to get most of the organisation done; however with the professional help of The Aleit Group, we were able to have the perfect wedding. Their attention to detail was unbelievable and even we were treated to some delightful surprises throughout the day. The Aleit team did an outstanding job and delighted us as well as our guests.

Tell us more about the honeymoon.

We had the most amazing honeymoon. The morning after the wedding we flew out early to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The following day we started on our climb up Kilimanjaro. Walking through five ecological zones and learning about the history of the area was fascinating. The climb was tough but so worth it, standing on the highest peak of Africa, surrounded by glaciers. After the climb we flew to Ngorongoro Crater to indulge at a luxury resort and enjoy the beauty of the wildlife and amazing picturesque setting. Next we spent a couple of days in the Serengeti and watched the Wildebeest migration on its way up north which was spectacular to see.

Advice to other couples tying the knot soon.

Don’t sweat the small things; everything will fall into place on the day. The day goes by so quickly, take time throughout the day to reflect and the most important aspect is that you and the guests have fun and enjoy the day.

How did you meet?

Darren, originally from Joburg, was coaching tennis at a Yacht Club in Port Washington, NY in the summer of 2009. This was after he had graduated from University in Charlotte, North Carolina. We met at a local bar “Sullivan’s Quay” in Port Washington. It was my friend’s birthday celebration and Darren was also there with his friend for a couple of beers. Since the pub is a somewhat intimate (locals only) venue, it was easy for us to spark a conversation and become friends. After that summer, Darren moved to Dubai for almost a year and returned to NY in 2010 to coach tennis for the summer, after that he never left... we were inseparable from that point.

How did he propose?

During a safari trip at Lion Sands Private Game Reserve in SA. Darren had originally wanted to propose during a night’s stay in an outdoor tree house at the Reserve, but due to rain, he had the entire suite decorated with rose petals, candles and had champagne on the rocks. After a private game drive, we arrived at the suite and Darren proposed on one knee. We later had a private dinner at the resort. It was beautiful and romantic and everything a girl would dream of for a proposal.

How did you experience your wedding day?

It ran so smoothly. Everything was so perfectly coordinated that all we had to do was show up! Our guests felt the same - no complaints!

Your best moment of the day?

When we read our personalized vows to each other.

Something nice about us.

Our wedding day was absolute perfection. It was difficult to envision what the venue/wedding would look like 8,000 miles away, but Johnny and the Aleit team brought every fantasy to life on our actual day!

Tell us more about the honeymoon.

We stayed in the Maldives for seven nights on a villa above the water. It was pure seclusion for our romantic get-away. The water - crystal clear, the service - amazing, the food - delicious. It was very romantic and peaceful which was perfect after traveling all over the world with many family and friends.

Advice to other Bridal couples tying the knot soon.

Don’t get caught up with “tradition” and what your guests expect in a wedding ceremony or reception. Do whatever you want. You’ll be surprised how much you and your guests will appreciate a wedding that is simply “yours.”

This exquisite dinner was hosted at the premium Bentley Dealership in Sandton, Johannesburg. The majestic building with its glass walls was a vision from all sides; exclusive sports cars were flooded with lights attracting each passerby, each demanding more attention than the next. The true beauty of these cars lay in the design and curve of each and every part. To match this, the theme of the evening was set as sophistication, deep gold, royal blue and touches of white were used to set the tone.

As the sun set on a perfect Jozi day, the esteemed guests arrived one by one. Attendees were welcomed by a glass of ice cold Marguet Pere Et Fils Champagne while wondering through the whole dealership, in awe of the beauty of the motor vehicles. The Champagne was in perfect balance with the Peking duck pancakes and crumbed artichoke canapés. While networking with their colleagues the boys couldn’t get enough of their toys and even the only lady in attendance was admiring the sleek cars.

Guests took their seats at a long elegant table, draped in a silky champagne cloth, menus laid on top of crisp white napkins and the King Silver cutlery was placed vertically ascending from starters to main course. The table was covered in blue and transparent vases with a selection of fresh inviting flowers. Votive candles were spaced meticulously at the table to ensure enough lighting on the table reflecting on transparent ghost chairs.

A cold Vichyssoise (that’s French for potato and leek soup) was served in an espresso cup with a crispy crouton and paired with the Champagne. Our Champagne Expert then shared his knowledge and thoughts with the guests about Champagne and the houses to be tasted during the evening. All the guests were intrigued as they began to understand the processes and why Champagne paired so perfectly with each item as the night followed with each course. Ricotta gnocchi with pine nuts wrapped in grilled aubergine was served as starter and paired with Larmandier Bernier.

For the main course, Pol Roger was paired with spiced blackened salmon with citrus salsa, waffle potatoes and seasonal greens. Cake stands filled with macaroons, golden apple tartlets, dark chocolate tartlets and lemon zest tartlets were placed on tables to finish of this exquisite evening.

Guests not only left with full tummies but also a head full of ideas as to the cars they aspire to drive!

CHAMPAGNE EVENT 2012

This year marks the 11th Annual Absa Capital Champagne Festival taking place in South Africa. Needless to say we were very excited when the time came for us to begin the planning for this special event...

The event was to be held once again at the beautiful Summer Place in Johannesburg. Such a versatile venue and perfect for the theme we had in mind for this year’s festival! We decided to go green - literally!! Think masses of white blooms poised beautifully in various shaped clear glass vases with bright green additions as the perfect splash of colour.

Not as with the past years, we were due to have some rain so we erected two beautiful chino coloured Bedouin tents over the emerald green lawns and pulled the sides down just enough to shield the weather but to also allow for a perfect view of the famous fountains in the pool... We then brought in a very chic but fun harvest festival vibe and achieved this by using custom made furniture which spoke to the theme perfectly. Quirky ottomans made from raw pallets with plush white cushions were placed with ornate white iron side tables on the green lawns. We also created an elegant white eight meter long banquette couch down one side of the Bedouin giving an opulent air to the day. Airy white day beds were dotted about the pool with white cloth billowing in the breeze and circled by high turned cocktail tables and attractive chairs.

Guests arrived to a perfectly chilled glass of French Champagne and moved into the Tasting Room to start their rounds armed with their tasting notes and sharpened pencils. Spoilt for choice with brands like Taittinger, Billecart-Salmon and Pol Roger to name only three of the twenty eight houses on display. Each house was manned by an expert to take the guests through the motions when it comes to Champagne and its history. The ever beautiful Jo-Ann Strauss was onsite as the elegant MC for the day and regaled guests with information on the delicious drink of choice for the day.

The Oyster King spoilt guests with freshly shucked oysters while four brand new Weber braai’s were also on the go manned by our Chefs grilling mouth watering delights to not only entertain guests but fill their tummies too! Let’s not forget the extensive Dessert table which boasted several different types of sweet treats. To put the literal cherry on the cake, Godiva Chocolates and biscuits were also available to taste – what an indulgence!

We were also treated to a display of the top of the range Bentley’s which were parked for all to see and have a seat in should they wish. Nothing quite like an up close and personal with a car of that calibre with a hand full of French Champagne and guests were clearly in love with the car of their dreams!

PAUL ROOS GYMNASIUM MATRIC FAREWELL

FEATURES // 45

Your Matric Farewell is always a night to remember – looking back, we can all remember that special night in vivid detail. So when Paul Roos requested this year The Aleit Group to be involved, we jumped at the opportunity to make Paul Roos’ Matric Farewell one for the record books! This was to be a real out-of-the-box event...

Paul Roos is one of the most prestigious boys schools in South Africa situated next to the Eerste River in Stellenbosch and established in 1866.

Approaching Old Boy’s, Hans Roosenschoon and Gustaaf Boshoff, with a brief, they explained that they want to move away from the typical themed events that turned out to just be copies of previous years’ farewells. Looking at traditional American proms, they decided to incorporate these ideas in the decor by having the hall filled with lights, balloons, neon paint and confetti canons to name a few elements.

The whole of the Paul Roos grade 11 group jumped in with the creative and economic idea of each mother providing one white flower arrangement to be used as décor, while the rest of the budget was kept for hiring in elements like chairs, cutlery and glasses. Keeping up with a 1st world country such as America, production was the focus of the evening, with exceptional lighting giving the room that ultra cutting-edge look.

Fulfilling any parent’s dream, we have successfully reached the overall goal of keeping the scholars safe by keeping them at the venue as long as possible. As opposed to the students going out on the town after the formalities were done, they were keen to stay in the stunning venue and dance the night away in true style!

It was an honour for The Aleit Group’s Old Boys to give something back to their school and relive the night with the Executives of the future – the Paul Roos Matric’s of 2012.

Page 51: Aleit Group Magazine Sixteenth Edition
Page 52: Aleit Group Magazine Sixteenth Edition

SPRINGBOK ENGAGEMENT SESSION - JHBAfter the Cape Town leg of the Springbok Engagement Sessions we were excited to get started with the Jozi version!

The venue for this one was Shine Studios in Braamfontein – an industrial gem overlooking the old railway and the famous Jo’burg skyline. In Cape Town the focus was on the ocean as a perfect addition to the decor so in Jo’burg we brought the skyline inside by projecting it up onto the large white wall of the venue to set the scene.

With floor to ceiling glass windows, the venue was light and airy and we decided to go with the same decor and feel as Cape Town to allow for elegant continuity... Once again the Bokke arrived in style with a police escort in their massive green bus, excited for the night ahead. These rather large gentlemen, dressed to kill in fitted black suits with striking green ties, made their way up the three flights of stairs to the main venue... They were going to have to wait a while if we were to get them all into the lift in turns! The Team of Millions walked in to an eruption of applause from the energized guests who couldn’t wait to see who would be sitting with them at their table...

The players were the perfect addition to the tables adding to the masculine wooden elements set off by the generous and striking flowers and decor pieces. The venue was lit up in various shades of green and ambient gold with the glow from the city centre. Matthew Pierce again graced us with his knowledge and excellent humour as the MC for the evening. Matt’s genuine knowledge of not only the game, but the players, was evident throughout the evening!

After the Cape Town event, Gustaaf of Stir Food was up to the challenge of feeding the Bokke! A sumptuous three course meal was prepared and Lamb Shank was on the menu for the main course. Where all guests got one exceptionally prepared and plated Shank, each player was given two. Yes, that’s one kilogram of meat each! But if you are Tendai “The Beast” Mtawarira, you need three Shanks to keep you going we found out!

Striking – the one word on everyones lips this month. The Oxford Dictionary has many explana-tions for this word, but three really seem to stick with me. The first - refuse to work as a form of organized protest, typically in an attempt to obtain a particular concession or concessions from their employer; the second - attracting attention by rea-son of being unusual, extreme, or prominent; and lastly - a thought or idea come into the mind of someone suddenly. Fortunately for us, the wedding and events indus-try is one that is not striking this month. Firstly, we do not have the time, and secondly, it’s the furthest thing from our minds! That being said, it does not mean we are not affected by it. Just recently, dur-ing an event in Johannesburg, a couriered ship-ment of beverages could not be delivered to us as our venue was right in the city centre, not too far from the stone-throwing truck strikers of Market Street. Crisis management, numerous phone calls and plan B’s, C’s and D’s were in full swing, and luckily our clients and guests alike were treated to crisp wines and cold refreshments with absolutely no knowledge of the dilemma we had during the course of the day.

TO END IT OFF

Silly season may be only in December for some, but it hits us a few months earlier every year. October is the time of year when we start thinking of corporate year-ends. Myself and my team are currently working on new, fresh and thrilling themes and concepts for numerous corporate celebrations at the end of this year. We pride ourselves in coming up with contem-porary, stylish events, attracting attention by reason of being unusual, extreme, or prominent. Although our clients have opted for less lavish and over-the top parties, I am exceptionally excited to share the new ideas we have come up with, to absolutely blow you away with striking visuals and media updates. On a personal note, this month I celebrated my first wedding anniversary – how time flies! I cannot be-lieve this time last year I shared my vows with my strikingly beautiful wife, Babette. When the hustle and bustle of daily work gets too much, she is defi-nitely my “thought or idea that comes into the mind of someone suddenly”.

Kind Regards,

Hans Roosenschoon - Managing Director - The Aleit Group
