You have heard a lot about ASID 2.0 and the idea that

ASID encompasses ALL facets of interior design. Your

state board is a representation of that movement. We

have students, professionals practicing in all scopes of

design, industry partners, and a university professor. It

is our goal to ensure every member’s voice is heard

and every member’s needs are met. With our diversity

comes innovative thinking, which will lead to new and

exciting opportunities for the chapter. Remember: we

are #notjustresidential and ASID is ready for the future of design.

An idea we came to together as a board that we are excited to share with

everyone is to separate the State Conference and Annual Meeting, and

have 2 different events each year. The State Conference will still be held in

the fall and will always be in Birmingham. The Annual Meeting will be held

in the spring and the location will change each year in order to showcase

all of our design communities. For our first year, we will be having the

Annual Meeting in Huntsville. Many more dates and details will be given

soon, but I want to go ahead and begin encouraging everyone to plan on

attending. We will have a speaker, activities, and a reception.

Along with the Annual Meeting event, we have many more new and fun

ideas and events we are excited to share with you. But we need your help!

If you are interested, please contact myself or any of the board members

about joining a committee this year. The committees are:

Recruitment and Retention Committee

Student Affairs Committee

Emerging Professionals Committee

IP Support Committee

PR/Community Outreach Committee

State Conference Committee

Strategic Planning Committee

I want to end this letter with a huge THANK YOU to you all for believing in

me to lead this amazing chapter. I also want to thank the previous boards I

served on under Richard Cable and Bradley Logan, and our amazing

administrator Bryant Williams for showing me the ropes. It is going to be a

great year, and I cannot wait to go on this journey with you!

In 2011 the ASID Alabama Board of Directors set in motion an initiative that would expand the chapters’ support of, and benefits to, interior design students in the state. The initiative continues to be a concerted effort, an ever-evolving and growing strategy, with the goal of ensuring our future interior designers are provided with the very best foundation on which to succeed. ASID Alabama has long placed emphasis on our student members, and that emphasis endures and indeed intensifies with each year.

One of the many strategic endeavors the Board launched in 2011 was to establish endowed scholarships at the state colleges in the name of our beloved benefactor, Daisy Houston Bond. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of representatives from the Board, Susan Pendleton, Betsy Keller, and Suzanne Barnes, the idea became reality. Auburn University quickly embraced the scholarship, offering to match any funds ASID Alabama donated, through their Spirit of Auburn Scholarship program. The combination of funds from ASID and Auburn placed the Daisy Bond—Alabama Chapter ASID Endowed Scholarship on a fast-track to maturity, and the first scholarship was awarded in 2011.

The 2014 Board of Directors is proud to announce this past month they were able to bring to fruition the dream which began three years ago, and presented the University of Alabama with the final installment that would formally establish the Daisy Bond—Alabama Chapter ASID Endowed Scholarship. On September 23rd Beverly Kissinger, Allied Educator ASID, Financial Director for ASID Alabama, presented the final check to Amy Parton, Director of Development, CHES at the University of Alabama.

Even though this small part of our outreach to the students has been completed, the Board of Directors has already identified several new strategies and goals, and has begun refining their ideas including suggestions for the recent Past Presidents’ Council meeting. Stay tuned for more exciting developments that will greatly benefit our amazing student members!

good-bye to a long-time friend. September 17, 2014

brought the passing of Doris Plagge Burton, age 93,

of Birmingham, Alabama. Doris was a graduate of

Iowa State University and Purdue University. After

teaching design at Purdue during wartime, and

working in Chicago at Peoples Gaslight and Coke Co.,

she moved to The University of Alabama sight

unseen in 1949, where she fell in love with her future husband and the

University. At the request of the Dean, she began the Interior Design program,

and today this program is a leading interior design program in the country,

being nationally accredited since 1975.

While teaching interior design for 37 years in the College of Human

Environmental Sciences, Doris also produced and hosted over 150 University-

sponsored, half-hour programs on home economics in the early years of

Alabama Public Television. In 1983, Doris was awarded the UA National

Alumni Association Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award. She retired

from the University in 1986 as Professor Emerita.

Doris was a member of several national interior design organizations, including

as a Fellow member of the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), and

Chairman of the New York-based Foundation for Interior Design Education

Research (FIDER), where she also served as Trustee, Chairman of the Board,

and later as Acting Executive Director upon her retirement from the University.

An avid reader who enjoyed traveling and teaching, Doris always enjoyed

seeing former students succeeding in their design careers. As a subtle

feminist, she reminded people on occasion that she once climbed Colorado's

14,000-foot Long's Peak while wearing a dress.

A memorial has been

established to honor Doris

in the form of a scholarship

at the University of

Alabama. Anyone wishing

to make a donation may do

so at The Doris Burton

Parton, Box 870158,

Q. What do you think is the most important aspect of the relationship with a client?

A. Communication, fiduciary responsibility, listening to the client, and attention to detail. Q. What tips would you give a recent interior design graduate?

A. Community involvement, explore design and supply resources, be confident and deliberate in

your design choices, be judicious with your client’s assets. Q. What is the first thing you ask a client?

A. With Commercial clients, tell me about your business and what are the design needs of the end user. For Residential clients, what is your lifestyle in the home, what is your budget and

scope of work, and what are your style preferences. Q. What are your favorite design resources? A. High Point Market, AD, local design centers, literature and the internet.

School: University of Alabama

Graduation Year: 2015 Hometown: Huntsville, AL Intended Area of Specialty: Residential

Hobbies: I enjoy traveling, singing, baking, dancing, and any hands-on project. Q. What made you choose interior design as a career?

A. I started off as a pre-medical/nursing major and I was severely unhappy in all of my classes. A friend of mine who was already a interior design major suggested that I take a one design class and see how I liked, and use it as an elective just in case I did

not. It was right after my first week that I fell in love with design and I immediately changed my major to pursue a career in interior design. I finally had a major that made me feel at home and one of the requirements was to bring all of the creativity

that I had taught myself to tame to surface. Q. Who has been the biggest inspiration or influence on you in regards to interior design?

A. Some of the biggest inspirations and influences in the industry or interior design have been Nikki Chu, Jeff Andrews, Kati Curtis, and Charles Neal.

Q. What are your hopes and dreams for after graduation? A. My hopes and dreams after graduation are to obtain my M.F.A. in Furniture design, work to get my NCIDQ certification, start my own interior design business, and design my own furniture, textiles, and home decor on

the side. Q. What has been your most memorable moment in design school so far?

A. My most memorable moment in design school do far would have to be taking CTD 301: New York Study Tour, an Interim course, where I had the opportunity to Visit, other designers, go to ICFF, and visit the offices and showrooms of Herman Miller, Knoll, Holly Hunt, Ralph Lauren, and Stark Fabric.

Q. How would you describe your design style? A. I would describe my style as contemporary. My ideal space would have clean/sleek lines, neutral modern

furniture, and the incorporation of color and cultural infusions.

A s ASID members we are both commercial and residential designers. Let us

look at the numbers a bit, 3,000 commercial designer, 5,000 residential designer and 8,000 that do both commercial and residential. In my opinion that makes us a force to be reckoned with. That is 16,000 interior designers strong across this

nation.

As a state we have grown in the number of members according to our numbers

from this time last year. At September of 2013 we had 266 members and as of September 2014 AL ASID has 290 members and that is because of our members.

Let’s keep working towards this forward motion.

So if you have any suggestions on how you think we can grow our membership, please feel free to email me at [email protected].

Student Perspective

Beverly Kissinger, interior design instructor at the University of Alabama, was

awarded the Dr. Mary Ann Potter Outstanding Educator Award during the

chapters’ annual awards banquet on September 12th. Beverly was unanimously

chosen to receive this prestigious award in part for her dedication to her students,

ASID, and the interior design profession. Through the years she proven to be more

than an professor; she’s a mentor, a friend, and one of the most inspiring people

you could ever hope to meet.

In the letter nominating Beverly, Bradley Logan, ASID, RID, wrote “She never forgets the students

that she has instructed from year to year. It has been a wonderful experience to have learned from

her as a student as well as a practitioner outside of the academic world.” No one can dispute

Bradley’s sentiments, but we’d also like to add that Beverly has so often, and generously, shared her

talents and time with everyone, asking for nothing in return. In addition to her expertise as an interior

designer, she is also an accomplished artist; many of her works were recently presented at the

university in a show entitled “A Creative Life”.

The annual Dr. Mary Ann Potter Educator Award honors the educators in our state who have shown

outstanding and significant contributions to interior design education and/or the Alabama ASID

chapter.

Auburn ASID and USGBC Chapter Members Team

Up

For the past few months one of our Auburn ASID Student Chapter

members, Rachel Ohly, has been working with one of our fellow student

chapters on campus, U.S. Green Build Council Auburn Chapter, on a competition project.

The USGBC Auburn Chapter team received honorable mention for their design and was

placed in the top two in the USGBC Alabama competition. Their design will be displayed at

Greenbuild in New Orleans on October 22-24, 2014. The team members were Hannah

Jagadowski, USGBC Auburn president, Jessica Been, Rachel Ohly, Student ASID, and Jacob

Gorman, a building science major, with faculty mentors, Amanda Gale, ASID Student

Chapter Advisor, and Darren Olsen.

The competition goal was to design a small exhibit for children, that teaches them about sustainability in

interior design, architecture, building science, urban planning and other areas. The team designed a mobile

learning center named "Progress On Wheels", which utilized interactive games, educational graphics, an

indigenous plant exhibit, and a display of sustainable materials. The team’s goal was to educate children on

the importance of water conservation, recycling, and sustainable landscaping, construction and urban

development.

Our first meeting was during the 2014 Annual Conference and it was agreed that the immediate past-president would preside over the council each year in order to be the most familiar with activities of the current board.

The role of the council is to keep our past-presidents involved; allow them to have a voice in the continued success and also just stay in touch with one another. We are merely an advisory group. We do not have the ability to make decisions but only give recommendations to the current board if and when they need them. It was great to have 10 past presidents including myself working on topics that could help the chapter continue to prosper.

A few of the items that were discussed and recommendations made were The William Dry Donation Student Competitions (Daisy Bond, Student Design Competition) Annual Meeting How to promote our chapter by getting our name in front of

Architects and Professors at the Universities.

During the first Board of Directors meeting for the fiscal year, after handing the gavel over to Stacey, I gave the report as recommendations from the Past-President’s council. See each of you at our annual meeting in the spring.

Greetings from the Past Presidents Council.

Over the past two and a half

years, ASID has undergone a rigorous assessment of the

Society’s vision, goals, offerings and operations. Acknowledging gaps in the

organization’s structure, ASID leadership realigned several existing positions and created a few new ones to

better serve the needs of members, colleague institutions and the design community as a whole. An extensive

search has yielded the right combination of skills, experience and passion to advance the profession and to

communicate the ability of interior design to improve lives.

Five new members have been appointed to the senior leadership team: Laura Horsley, vice president of

Communications and Marketing; Karol Kaiser, vice president of Education and Engagement; Christopher Wojcik,

vice president of Membership and Industry Development; Fernando Arias, director of Strategic Initiatives; and

Reed Kroloff, strategic partnership consultant.

“This is an exciting time for ASID,” said Randy Fiser, ASID CEO. “These three talented vice presidents are new to

ASID but not to the areas they will lead. Laura, Karol and Chris possess a depth of knowledge that will strengthen

the whole of ASID. Plus they are team players, eager to use their experience for the greater good, and passionate

about the work they do. Their collective insight will enable ASID to foster an understanding of design’s impact on

the way we live, work, play and heal.”

“I had the pleasure of working with Fernando on the Society’s Clinton Global Initiative commitment to develop

‘ASID Protocols for Health and Wellness in Design,’” said Fiser.

“His expertise in architecture, sustainability, project management and bringing people together will be critical to

creating this industry tool. Meanwhile, we’re delighted to tap the industry insights and analysis that Reed brings to

the table. With his guidance, we are sure to fill the gaps in interior design education with programming that will

benefit the whole design community.”

ASID released a new interactive tutorial

At their recent meeting the Board of Directors voted to approve a

few changes to the Design Excellence Awards. Exciting changes!

In addition to the small changes below, we are currently working

on a system to allow the entire competition, project submission

and judging, to be done online.

For both residential and commercial, a single project can be

entered in both a small or large project category AND the single

space category. If you have a large commercial space, you can

enter it as a whole project in the Large Commercial category,

and you can also enter any of the rooms you are especially

proud of in the Single Space category.

Emerging Professionals will now have two categories; Emerging

Professional-Residential, and Emerging Professional-

Commercial.

There will be a new category added; Innovation in Lighting.

The “Best in Competition” award is being brought back by

popular demand.
