Figure 2. DSL Forum Standards for CPE Management

Remote Device Management Based on DSL Forum TR-069

The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM implements the WAN-side managementprotocol described in the DSL Forum TR-069 standard. TR-069 specifies a protocol stack, connectivity and object model for the management of modemsand residential gateways. The TR-069 standard has been extended with TR-111to allow management of devices behind a NAT residential gateway. Connectivitybetween the Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM and home devices is established basedon HTTP and IP protocols, making the link-layer independent and suitable forany service provider (access provider, Internet service provider [ISP] or appli -cation provider).

The TR-069 protocol is CPE-driven, as the CPE connects periodically to themanagement system. The CPE also contacts the Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNMon specific events such as reboot and IP address change. This communicationis complemented with a connection request mechanism, permitting theAlcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM to contact the CPE at any time.

Intelligent Policy EngineAn intelligent policy engine is imple ment ed to provide a high level ofautomation for day-to-day opera tions, including initial device activa tion and configuration, configuration updates, proactive maintenance and trou -bleshooting. Detailed reporting is provided to inform operators of the state of a given policy — typically sta tistics on successfully executed actions, aborted actions or on-going retries.

Multiple Device Activation Scenarios“Zero-touch” activation offers your subscribers the ability to activate newdevices simply and easily. The objec tive of the initial device activation is togive the device access to your Internet network, configure the device forthe services subscribed and enable the Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM to take overdevice management.

The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM sup ports three main device activationscenarios, allowing you to choose those that best suit your needs, with easyadaptation as your services and processes evolve.

Managing New Devices on the Fly The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM canmanage new device types or releaseson the fly. For that purpose, you cansimply load the object model of thedevice in an XML form. The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM will take overmanagement of the device with noneed for further adaptation.

Interaction in Your OSS EnvironmentThe Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM pro -vides a northbound interface to com -mu nicate with higher level OSSs. Thisinterface is implemented through a setof high-level primitives covering serv -ice provisioning, device configuration, software management, etc. These

primitives provide a powerful meansfor OSS applications to performmanagement operations on one orseveral devices with a single command.

System ArchitectureThe Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM hasbeen developed as a J2EE application, making it independent of the under -lying operating system. The JavaVirtual Machine shields the applica -tion server from the underlying hard -ware. The Alcatel-Lucent uses BEAWebLogic, but owing to the use ofJ2EE, it can be easily adapted to othermiddleware systems (e.g., Jboss).Hibernate provides the same inde -pendence for the database technologyand enables smooth migration fromOracle to any other database system.
