ALBURY PUBLIC SCHOOL PROUD Member of the crossing point learning community Week 1 Term 2 2 May, 2018 Welcome back to Term 2. An especially big welcome to our new families who started with us at Albury PS. This week we welcomed 11 new students to Albury PS. We hope that you enjoy your educational journey with us. We have a huge term ahead of us again with camps, NAPLAN, school photos, cross country carnival and written reports, just to name a few. Please keep a close eye on the newsletter and Facebook to ensure that you are aware of all the happenings. We make every effort to ensure communication is smooth and seamless. I look forward to attending the Cross Country on Monday and want to remind everyone about school photos next Thursday and Friday. STAFFING: I have been given permission to form a panel and advertise for a permanent classroom teacher. This process is quite lengthy but I hope to have an outcome by the end of this term. Miss Stephanie Redgment is, unfortunately, not returning to Albury PS and 1/2MR. Mrs Taylor Dickson will teach 1/2MR until School Staffing makes a decision about filling the position with a permanent teacher. Once again, this process can be lengthy and I am aware of the potential disruption to students but every effort has been made to minimise the disruption and to continue the quality student learning opportunities. We welcome Mrs Karen Tanner to the Administration Manager position for this term. Mrs MacKay has returned to her substantive position at Thurgoona PS and we thank her sincerely for her contribution to the school during her time here, in Term 1 and in 2017. The School Administration Manager position will also be recruited this term as Mrs Clarkson has retired from the Department. We wish her well in retirement and I am sure she will thrive in her new phase of life. ANZAC Day 2018: It was terrific to see so many students, parents and staff attending the ANZAC Day march last Wednesday. It was the first ANZAC Day march for me and it was an absolute pleasure to be able to march with the APS students and staff. Following the march, the school captains, their families, Miss Brooker and I headed up to the monument for the 10:00am service and wreath laying. It was a lovely way to commemorate ANZAC Day. The school ANZAC service was held on Friday 13 April, prior to the school holidays. The school leaders were our hosts, with Peter Travassaros playing the Last Post. A huge thank you to our Guest Speaker, Glen McFarlane (father of Finley), Mrs Woodward and Ms Griffiths for their organisation of the school service. NAILCAN: The 2018 Nail Can Hill Run will be staged in Albury-Wodonga on this Sunday 6 May. Albury PS students are encouraged to register for and complete the Half Can Run. This event is over a shorter distance of 4.3km and is designed to encourage younger participants as well as casual joggers/walkers. In 2016 the Primary School challenge was introduced, with prizes paid directly to the winning schools. $500 will go to the school that wins the event, this is based on the combined times of the first 6 runners in that team. There is also a $200 prize available for the team that takes second place. A further $300 will go to the school team with the largest number of entrants. Last year, Albury Public School received the prize for being the school with the most competitors entered in the Primary School Can. To register for either Nail can Hill event, please visit nailcanhillrun.com.au/registration. Wishing you a happy and productive week. Lianne Singleton, Principal (Rel) WINTER UNIFORM- With the changing of the season and weather, comes the changing of school uniforms. A reminder that blue windcheaters and spray jackets are part of the uniform, other colours are not. School hats are optional during Terms 2 and 3, however we recommend that students do continue to wear them when outside, especially on sunny days. There are quite a few second hand uniforms in our uniform shop. If you wish to have a look please see the office staff. We welcome donations of any uniforms of good quality your children have outgrown. Please drop the clothing into the Front Office. A reminder that our formal winter uniform will be required for School Photos which are being held in Week 2, Thursday 10 and Friday 11 May.

This term we have had a surprising addition to our playground, a Playground Piano. The playground piano has been inspired by Luke Jerram's international public art project, Street Pianos. You can read more about Street Pianos at http://www.streetpianos.com/about/. The piano will enrich our students' school experience, support their learning and enhance their wellbeing in myriad ways:

Providing a focal-point for social interaction

Allowing all students hands-on access to a musical instrument

Enabling students with musical skills the opportunity to perform for their peers

Fostering curiosity about music and the arts

Offering an opportunity for students to demonstrate care and respect for peers and property Mrs Power and her talented visual art students also plan to make our Playground Piano a work of visual art as well.

Jericho Ellao held an impromptu lunchtime concert on our Playground Piano which was very well received by his rapt audience.

CANTEEN MONITORS- Thank you to the students who assisted in the Canteen in term one: Kirra Blackmore, Tahlia Stain and Piper Harvey. Congratulations to: Rory Cosgrave, Bertie Doyle, Brayden Lindsay, Hayden Langston and Ned Haebich who will be helping in the Canteen in term 2. Well done, senior students! Christel Pargeter

You can do so by taking a small box with a few books, supplied with pre-cut contact, from Mrs Pargeter in the Annexe. Thanking you in advance, Stage 3 staff and students.
