Playoff spots still up for grabsAlberta’s Carey catches a break and cruises to 1-2 spot

After 16 draws it will all come down to this morning’s final draw of the round robin to determine the playoff teams for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

There are only two certainties. One, Chelsea Carey and her Alberta team, which finished

9-2 after escaping with a 6-5 win over Jolene Campbell of Sas-katchewan Thursday evening, will play in tonight’s Page 1-2 playoff game.

Two, Jennifer Jones and Team Canada, 8-2 after their 7-4 win over Jenn Hanna of Ontario, will advance. But they could be in the 1-2 game or the 3-4 game, depending on the results of the final draw.

The rest depends on what Kerri Einarson of Manitoba does in her final game against New Brunswick. Einarson stole two in the first end and added three in the third to beat Suzanne Birt of P.E.I. 8-7 Thursday evening at Revolution Place.

A Manitoba win this morning would mean she advances to the Page 3-4 game, but a loss brings three teams – Ontario, Sas-katchewan and Nova Scotia – back into the mix for possible tiebreakers.

Campbell had at least a tiebreaker spot in her hands with the final stone of her game but lost it when her stone rolled out on a hit-and-stick attempt. That let Alberta steal two for the win and left Campbell in tears long after the game.

“I feel for her,” said Carey. “I feel like we didn’t get a lot of breaks in that game overall. But then, well, obviously nobody wants to win like that. We hurt for her.

“You take it, but we would have liked to have won in a more,

‘we won’ fashion.”Jones, the defending champion, definitely won in a positive

fashion. They scored two in the first end, two more in the fourth and stole singles in the fifth and sixth.

“I’m feeling we’re playing well,” said Jones. “We’re mak-ing big shots when we have to … and getting better each game.

“We’re getting rocks in good spots and the girls are play-ing well in front of me. Trying to make our opponents shots as tough as we can and it’s working for us.”

The top four teams make the Page Playoffs. The first and sec-ond place teams play today at 6:30 p.m. with the winner advanc-ing to Sunday’s gold-medal game. The third- and fourth-place teams meet Saturday at 1:30 p.m., with the winner moving onto the semifinal Saturday night at 6:30. The loser of the three-four game will play the semifinal loser in the bronze-medal game on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Ontario third Brit O’Neill calls the line against Team Canada’s Jennifer Jones (right) on Thursday night. Ontario lost but remains alive in the fight for a playoff spot.

Each year the Scotties Tournament of Hearts has its share of rookie curlers and for most of them it’s

an experience they may never forget.Getting the provincial jersey with

their names on it, being piped into the arena for the first time, loud fans in the stands, media interviews, being on national television … it can all be overwhelming. Yet joyful.

“Oh my gosh, it’s been awesome,” a bubbly Carrie Vautour said of her first Scotties experience. “It’s been what I’ve wanted to do since I was like six or seven years old. So very happy to have opportunity to finally be here.”

This is the first ever national championship event for the 31-year-old lead on the Newfoundland-Labrador team skipped by Stacie Curtis.

She never played juniors, didn’t even start curling until her final year of high school and didn’t get into the competitive side of the sport until she had graduated from university with a Bachelor of Science degree followed by her Masters and Doctorate.

So the audiologist is loving every minute of the experience.

“It’s awesome. It’s so nice to have everyone kind of cheering for you, to be under the lights, to not have to wear my jacket when I’m curling because it’s so warm. It’s such a totally different experience and one I’m very privileged to have.”

For B.C. lead Trysta Vandale, her first emotional moment came when she got her B.C. uniform.

“When we first walked into our hotel rooms we kind of expected them to be on our beds but they weren’t there,” she recalled. “When we got them for the first time we kind of shed a quick little tear to have the B.C. flag and name on our back. That’s always been a dream.”

The petite Vautour was equally excited to get her jersey, even though it didn’t fit.

“I was so excited. I put it on, it was way too big. I had to have it altered, but that’s okay. I just had to wait an extra day, but it feels awesome to have a jersey, and the necklace of course.”

For Northern Ontario third Kendra Lilly, who played in four Canadian juniors, it’s the fans in Revolution Place who have impressed her.

“It’s so loud in here, it’s awesome,” she says “The ice is fantastic. And everything that goes on around it, the autograph sessions and even doing interviews, it’s just a whole different experience and I’m loving every minute of it.”

She and B.C. second Tracey Lavery have been able to look back on previous national championship experiences to help deal with the Scotties.

“Oh yeah, definitely,” said Lavery, at 41 the oldest rookie here who played in the 1992 Canadian juniors and two national mixed championships, in 2012 and 2014. “I think my muscles remember, today especially. It was like, oh

yeah, you did this before, remember?”Lilly said her junior experience taught her to not

to get too involved in everything going on around the curlers and the games.

“I know the first few times at (junior) nationals it was easy to get wrapped up in the media and the fans and all the cameras around so that experience helps to keep me focused here.”

And then, of course, there’s the first-time experience of being piped into the arena, often an emotional moment for rookies.

“It was pretty exciting,” said Vautour. “I was nervous the whole day leading up to it and as soon as we walked into the arena my butterflies went away.”

To help prepare first-timers for the event, teams often bring in veterans to help, as B.C. did when they added Sasha Carter, who played in eight Scotties with Kelly Scott and won twice, in 2006 and 2007.

“We needed someone on our side who could show us about how long the days are, how many games you need, how much time you need, the type of nutrition you need to make sure you’re ready for back-to-back games, piping you in every game, having the fans so close,” says Vandale. “So she’s been great giving us those pep talks and preparing us.”

In the end, however, all the preparation and planning won’t help if the players can’t execute on the ice. That, after all, is why they’re here.

“I’m pleasantly surprised that I’m curling fairly well for my first time at the Scotties,” says Vautour. “I thought I might crack a little under the pressure, but I think I’ve kind of held it together.”

And that makes the first-time experience even more memorable.

Love you auntie, but this is war!

Family is family and curling is curling. Aunt Jill Officer and her niece Kristin MacCuish heartily cheer each other on,

except for those rare occasions when they play each other … like Thursday afternoon at the Scotties.

It was Officer and Team Canada, still looking for first place in the round-robin, playing MacCuish and Manitoba, desperately seeking a win to keep alive their slim playoff hopes

So did Officer and her teammate show any sympathy to MacCuish and her mates? Not a chance.

“We both know and are well aware that when we go out on the ice it’s purely business and when we’re off the ice we’re family and still love each other,” Officer said after Team Canada’s 8-4 win. “But I will say it does not make it a whole lot easier.”

MacCuish, who was an alternate for Team

Canada in the 2013 Scotties, agrees it’s just like playing any other team.

“We kind of stick to ourselves,” she explains. “There’s a few moments before the game when we’re chit-chatting, but once we’re on the ice we’re in our own zone … just another competitor that I want to beat. It will happen.”

The two have rarely played each other – Officer thinks the last time was at an event this year in Portage La Prairie but MacCuish recalls it being in last year’s provincials. What they do agree upon, is that they enjoy watching curling together and chatting about the game they both love.

“We still watch curling together and talk strategy,” says Officer. “And I was there in full force at provincials (this year) cheering and hoping she would be here. Now that we’re direct competitors there are certain things that are a little more off-limits because neither one of us wants to give away secrets to our teams.”

Kristin MacCuish, left, and aunt Jill Officer.

SCOTTIES SCOREBOARD

Tickets from $20 curling.ca/tickets Page 15

They say there is no such thing as a bad Brier, but there are some better than

others. And some of the best have

always been held in Atlantic Canada, which is why curling fans have already responded with their wallets to buy full-event passes for next year’s Tim Hortons Brier in St. John’s.

It will be a curling party to end all curling parties.

“People will have a good time and St. John’s will put on a great Brier,” says Eugene Trickett, who is co-chairman of the event and

doubles as the coach for Team Newfoundland/Labrador here at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

This will be the first time the Brier has been held in St. John’s since 1972 when it was staged in the antiquated Memorial Stadium.

The old building was not suitable for another Brier visit, but with the beautiful Mile One Centre now in place, the time was ripe for the event to return to The Rock.

And St. John’s went after it aggressively.

“We wanted to be sure we could fill the building,” said Trickett, who chaired the bid committee. “So we went out and asked people to put down a $50

non-refundable deposit a year ago for a full-event pass.”

A total of 2,187 people put down deposits, and about 1,700 of them bought the tickets. And some of them, given the opportunity to buy more tickets, gobbled them up.

“When you throw in Curling Canada’s commitment for family and curlers, we’re around 2,200 full-event passes committed right now, and that was before tickets went on sale across Canada.

“It’s certainly encouraging for us,” says Trickett.

Tickets officially go on sale today. Tickets are available

at www.curling.ca/2017brier/tickets/

Trickett says St. John’s is ideally suited to host the Brier, much like it did for the 2005 Scotties.

“Everything is right there in downtown St. John’s,” he says. “Hotels, the convention centre and arena are attached, there’s famous George Street and Signal Hill is there right around the corner.

“We feel we have a real ‘destination’ to offer fans.”
