Guest Speakers Continued...

Steve Atwater, Ph.D., Dean of School of Education, UAFDr. Atwater joined the University of Alaska in Nov. 2014 after five years as superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District (KPBSD), where he was named Alaska’s 2013 Superintendent of the Year. Prior to his work for KPBSD, Atwater taught secondary education and served consecutively as head teacher, curriculum coordinator and superintendent for the Lake & Peninsula School District in King Salmon, AK.

Atwater’s experience with the Alaska education system extends to his own professional training, as he earned both his master’s in education and his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Amanda Friendshuh, EdRising AK 2017 Student Pres.Educators Rising Alaska 2017 student president Amanda Friendshuh was awarded one of seven Teach for Alaska Presidential scholarships for this year. The scholarship is the first for the University of Alaska (UA) and was awarded by UA President Jim Johnsen in May.

Amanda had been active with Educators Rising Alaska at CTSO events since she was a freshman in high school. Outside of CTSO, she encouraged fellow students in her school in Kenny Lake to become members of Educators Rising Alaska. She is an outstanding student, former CTSO officer (vice president and president), and role model. Her amazing leadership skills made her an excellent CTSO officer. She encouraged and motivated her fellow officers.

Amanda is a current education major at the University of Alaska Southeast campus. Alaska is in serious need for excellent homegrown Alaska teachers and Amanda will give future students a particularly meaningful education.
