Whenever you purchase a car, whether it is new or used, you must register the vehicle in order to be able to legally drive it in Alaska. Also, when you change your residential address to another state, you will have to follow the procedure to transfer your registration.

The entire process may seem quite complicated, but if you follow the steps carefully and gather the necessary documentation, you will be able to complete any necessary process relatively easily and quickly. This guide will provide you with step-by-step information on how you can register your vehicle. Learn how you can also transfer your out-of-state registration and renew proper credentials at the appropriate time. Additionally, the following sections will ensure that you have all the necessary forms you will need in order to complete the various DMV-related processes discussed here.

Vehicle

Registration

Getting a vehicle, whether new or used, is an exciting experience. Whether the vehicle is your first car or you have purchased multiple cars in the past, making the decision to obtain a car is a big step, and it must be taken carefully to avoid any inconveniences.

Registration Insurance

Requirements

When you register your vehicle, you will be required to obtain insurance before you are allowed to complete the registration process at the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This is a necessary requirement in order to help reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road, which can often result in high costs if you are involved in any vehicle accident.

Page 7 | Car-Registration.org

If you are looking forward to applying for your vehicle registration, it will be required that you obtain liability insurance for your automobile before you can register and legally drive your car without any penalties. Liability insurance is designed to help you pay for damages or injuries you caused to someone due to a car accident. The coverage plan must be acquired in Alaska from a licensed insurance company. Out-of-state insurance plans are not accepted in Alaska. You must comply with the following liability coverage minimums:

For property damage per accident: $25,000

For bodily injury or death of one person per accident: $50,000

It is important to always carry proof of insurance when driving, in case a police officer or any other authority requests it. The documents must be legible and show that the car is properly covered. Failure to keep valid car insurance may result in a license suspension. You must carry proof of insurance with you at all times when driving a motor vehicle.

For bodily injuries of one or more persons per accident: $100,000

Registering Your

Vehicle in Alaska

Whether you are submitting a request for a new, used, out-of-state, military or special type of vehicle, you should review the specific instructions to correctly register your car so you can make sure the process is as easy and quick as possible. In order to this, simply review the steps below to better understand the steps you must take in order to begin legally driving your vehicle in Alaska.

One of the most important parts of the vehicle registration process in Alaska is taking a look at the requirements you will need to meet, as well as the steps you must follow depending on the type of car you own.

Usually, if you purchased a brand new car at a dealership, you do not have to worry about registering it, since the dealership will take care of the entire process.

Payment for fees

• Fees will vary depending on your vehicle’s weight and other factors. You can find out the cost to register your vehicle here.

Nevertheless, in case your dealership did not register your vehicle for you, or if you happened to buy a new vehicle using a different method, you will need to register it yourself within a certain number of days after purchasing the automobile. If you have purchased a vehicle, you must apply for a title in your name within 30 days after the purchase.

If you have to register your new car, present the following information to the closest DMV office:

When you register your vehicle, you will need to present your driver’s license, and you may also need to provide proof of car insurance. Additionally, you may be asked for an Odometer Disclosure Statement.

An Odometer Disclosure Statement

• This is required for vehicles under 12,000 pounds and less than 10 years old.

Payment for the required fees

You may also need to present proof of your car insurance.

When you move to Alaska or acquire a vehicle out of state, you have 10 days to register it. Once you obtain your Alaska driver’s license and car insurance, you are ready to register your automobile. You will need to present:

Register an Out-Of-State Vehicle

Proof of ownership of the vehicle, such as the signed car title

An Odometer Disclosure Statement

• This is required for vehicles under 12,000 pounds and less than 10 years old.

Renewing Your

Vehicle Registration

As with many DMV documents, such as your driver’s license, your vehicle registration will eventually expire and require that you renew it. However, you should make sure to renew your registration before its expiration date if possible, as waiting too long to renew your vehicle registration may cause problems. An expired registration make it illegal for you to operate your vehicle, and if enough time passes after your vehicle registration expires, you may be fined or even charged with a crime, depending on how long your registration has been expired.

When your vehicle registration expiration date is approaching, you will receive a renewal notice. The notice will arrive approximately two months before your vehicle’s expiration date. All registrations expire on the last day of the registration month. You can renew your vehicle registration in person, by mail or online. When attempting to renew your registration, you must make sure all your documentation is valid and up to date.

Online

The online vehicle registration renewal method is the easiest option for renewing your registration. However, before taking advantage of the online renewal method, you will need to make sure you qualify to submit your online request. First, it is necessary to have a credit card to pay

the fees. Next, you can access the Online Registration Renewal site and follow the on-screen directions.

To renew online, you will need the registration renewal number (RRN) in your renewal notice. If you do not have the RRN, you will be able to use your license plate and the last two digits of your vehicle identification number (VIN) or hull identification number (HIN).

Replacing Your

Vehicle Registration

If your vehicle registration was recently lost, stolen or damaged, the Alaska DMV will help you in obtaining a new vehicle registration as soon as possible. According to Alaska law, you need one license plate on motorcycles and trailers, but you need to have two license plates for all other vehicles. Additionally, you need to place one registration tab on the rear license plate of your motor vehicle.

For you to be able to replace your vehicle’s decal or license, you will need to follow these steps:

Visit your local DMV office

Provide a copy of your previous vehicle registration certificate

Bring a copy of your vehicle registration, provide a license plate number (include your VIN number and a description of your vehicle) or complete form 812.

Pay the necessary replacement fee:

• Replacement Registration: $2

• Replacement Registration and Decal: $5

• Replacement License Plate: $5

• Personalized Plates: Varies

Page 17: Alaska Car Registrationcar-registration.org.s3.amazonaws.com/pdf/checklist/... · 2018-12-13 · When out on the road, you will know that you are covered and protected by an organization

If you are out of state or unable to visit your local DMV office to replace your registration, you can instead mail in the above documents and fee to the following address:

State of Alaska DMV 1300 W. Benson Blvd., STE 506 Anchorage, AK 99503 TTN: Correspondence

Alternatively, you can send an email requesting a duplicate car registration to [email protected]. Be sure to include information about the missing item, as well as the vehicle license plate number, the car’s VIN and its make and model. Finally, include your name, phone number and current mailing address.

Make sure you report your license plate when it is lost, damaged or stolen and you seek to replace it. Obtaining a police report stating your registration was lost due to a crime will alert authorities to search for the criminal and will help to prevent identity theft.

Whether you are moving homes to a new city or making a major change that requires you to change your name, you will need to consider how these changes affect your legal documents. When you move to a new residence or change your name for any reason, you will need to notify the Alaska DMV as soon as possible. Review the following sections to learn what steps you must take.

According to the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website, in order to change identification details, you will also need an updated license, which will require you to submit a driver’s license application form, pass a vision test and pay the license fee. You may also need to update your name on your car title, which will incur a $15 duplicate title fee.

Updating Your

Changing Your Name Making any type of change to your legal name will have a major effect on your documentation, including your vehicle registration. If you have officially changed your name, then you will be required to update it on all of your identification documents and cards, including your vehicle registration. You must notify the DMV of your name change within 30 days of the change.

Make sure you change your legal name with the Social Se-curity Administration (SSA) at least three days before you change your name with the Alaska DMV office. Your legal name must be valid with the Social Security office records in order for you to change your name with the DMV.

Changing Your AddressIf you have recently moved, changing your address on your vehicle registration is quite simple. Once you move, you will be required to change your address either when you go to renew your vehicle registration or when you go obtain a duplicate vehicle registration.

There are multiple methods for updating the address on your vehicle registration.

In Person or by Mail

To change your address either in person or by mail with the DMV office or kiosk, make sure to take the following steps:

Fill out the Notice of Change of Address (Form 401) or write a request to change your address providing the following information:

License

Plates

When you register your vehicle at the Alaska DMV office, you will automatically be assigned a license plate number. This will mean that every time you go to renew your vehicle registration, your license plate will also be renewed. The DMV office will provide you with a decal to attach to your license plate.

The decal, also called a tab, will state the date of expiration. You will be responsible for keeping your license plates valid at all times in order to legally drive in the state of Alaska.

Page 21 | Car-Registration.org

Getting your personalized license plate will cost you a standard fee. Any other custom license plate’s fees will vary and may include an additional renewal fee. A standard gold personalized license plate costs $30. The cost for other specialty license plates ranges from $30 to $100.

At the DMV, you can pay with cash, check or money order. However, when you pay online you must pay with a valid debit or credit card. Finally, all payments sent by mail to the DMV office must be made with a check or money order only.

Fees

Although motorcycles and trailers only need to display one license plate, all passenger vehicles, motor homes, trucks and vans need to display two license plates. You can obtain standard Alaska license plates when you register your vehicle for the first time. However, you can also choose to get a plate that best fits your tastes either in design, message or both. In the state of Alaska, you have the option of obtaining a license plate that fits your personality, hobbies or interests if your request is approved by the DMV.

You can have a personalized license plate with up to six characters, except for the “Support our Troops” plate, which may only feature five characters. With these characters, you can include alphabet letters from A to Z, numbers from zero to nine and spaces.

Vehicle Safety

Tips

The most important consideration to keep in mind before you begin driving any vehicle is that both you and the vehicle are well prepared for any trip you make. This means checking and making any changes to your vehicle or your behavior to make sure that you are able to drive safely at all times.

One of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include basic items such as water, extra batteries, rope, a first aid kid, matches, a whistle, etc. During winter months it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves, socks and a shovel.

Emergency Kit

One of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area where it snows. Therefore, it is best to consider these tips to drive safely during the winter.

Winter Driving

Page 25 | Car-Registration.org

Page 26: Alaska Car Registrationcar-registration.org.s3.amazonaws.com/pdf/checklist/... · 2018-12-13 · When out on the road, you will know that you are covered and protected by an organization

Avoid Rushing

Roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows, so instead of driving fast and risking an accident in a rush to get to your destination, try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive slower and help you avoid rushing other drivers by not tailgating them if they are going slower.

Do Not Panic If You Skid or Slip

In the case that your vehicle skids or slips while driving, make sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes. Instead, all you need to do is apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out of control.

Check Your Vehicle

Before you even leave your house, make sure your vehicle’s controls, brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze, exhaust, etc. are all working properly. It is also important that you remove all ice and snow from your car before you begin driving. This prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive.

Page 26 | Car-Registration.org

Page 27: Alaska Car Registrationcar-registration.org.s3.amazonaws.com/pdf/checklist/... · 2018-12-13 · When out on the road, you will know that you are covered and protected by an organization

Driving while using your cellphone is one of the most dangerous actions you can take because during the few seconds your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. Therefore, make sure you do not text, use the internet or make calls while you drive to prevent accidents.

Using Your Cellphone

Every year, thousands are killed as a result of drinking and driving. These deaths can be very easily prevented. It only requires that you plan ahead of time by taking certain steps.

Even before you begin drinking, you should arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. In the case that your designated driver also becomes intoxicated, it is important that you arrange to take a taxi or another safe form of transportation. If you see someone who you suspect is drunk, and that person exhibits signs of intoxication while driving, such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, braking erratically, turning abruptly, etc. call 911 and notify the proper authorities about the drunk driver. Also make sure to avoid drunk drivers on the road to ensure your own safety.

Drinking And Driving

Driving is not always a relaxing experience. There are certain actions that can be both an annoyance and dangerous to you while on the road driving. These things are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary steps towards preventing them, as well as stopping them after you discover them to be occurring.

What to Avoid

Page 27 | Car-Registration.org

Page 28: Alaska Car Registrationcar-registration.org.s3.amazonaws.com/pdf/checklist/... · 2018-12-13 · When out on the road, you will know that you are covered and protected by an organization

Car Accidents

The best way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this, you only need to regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are inflated and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions are maintained regularly by a mechanic and will not fail while you drive, especially at high speeds.

Wasting Gas

Due to the price of gas, you may begin to start looking for ways to save on expensive trips to the pump. Fortunately, saving on gas is possible if you take a few steps toward ensuring that you waste less gas.

Some of the ways you can start saving gas are by not using air conditioning, not leaving your engine running and avoiding driving above 60 mph. These actions are preventable and not necessary for you to drive. Therefore, you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste.

Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly. You can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated and that you keep to car’s maintenance schedule.

Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving and drivers should both be avoided to prevent any on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is categorized as exhibiting behaviors such as tailgating, verbal or physical harassment of another driver, preventing another driver from merging or passing, etc.

If you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. If you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment to breathe and relax before moving on.
