CAREER HISTORY

FALK AUSTRALIA Nov 2009 - July 2015Technical Writer, with occasional Mechanical Engineering and Drafting

1 Preparing, writing and collating of all installation and operating manuals produced by Falk Australia.

2 Preparing, writing and collating of manufacturing data reports & load test reports produced by Falk Australia.

3 Some detail design of reducer secondary components.4 Autocad and a bit of Solidworks drafting of pinions, gears, reducers, and drive

assemblies.

I was re-employed by Falk Australia as their technical writer on a short-term contract basis. Unfortunately the reducer sales and installations have been adversely affected by the downturn in the minerals market, and the available work has run out.

FALK AUSTRALIA Aug 2005 - Jan 2009Mechanical Engineer and Drafter

1 Design and sizing of gearbox lubrication and cooling systems.2 Sizing and evaluation of large pinions and gearwheels.3 Sizing and selection of reducers, couplings and other drive components.4 Collation and writing of all operating manuals produced by Falk Aust from

2006 - 2009.5 Autocad drafting of pinions, gears, reducers, and drive assemblies.

Originally employed as a short-term contractor, I worked there for a year before being made full-time. Eight of us were made redundant as a result of the economic downturn in January 2009. I was told that I should stay in touch, as contracting work will be available from time to time.

SKM May to June 2005Design Drafter (Short-term Contract)

1 Autocad Drafter with some engineering input. 2 Tasks included drafting of a dust extractor in a grain chute, design and

drafting of a double monorail crane to handle and store tarpaulins, design of a conveyor counterweight, as well as information-gathering and costing for a finished conveyor design.

United Goninan March to April 2005Drafter (Short-term Contract)

Involved the drafting for a redesign of the train driver's dead man's pedal.

Worley (Tomago Alliance) May 2004 to February 2005Design Engineer (Contract)

1 Designing, calculating and drafting both new items and modifications toexisting items to increase operator safety in the Liquid Metals department ofthe Tomago Aluminium smelter.

2 Tasks included platforms, stairs and ladders, handrails and guarding, and some work on machine operational requirements.

Sudholz Pty Ltd April to May 2004Draftsman (Fill-in Contract)

1 Worked as a subcontractor filling-in for their Autocad Draftsman who went on holidays.

2 Involved civil engineering drafting, mainly on residential subdivisions including drainage, piping, power pole projects and pre-fabricated bridge designs.

Ironbark Fabrications October 2003 to March 2004Draftsman (Contract)

1 Autocad drafting in 2D and 3D2 Involved quote drawings, and completion of workshop drawings for cable

trailers and cranes.

Private consulting jobs, Moree November 2002 - August 2003

1 Completed the calculations for determining the load capacity of a range of existing cranes at various businesses and cotton gins. This was the mainstay of my business, and involved careful measurements of everything from beams to the fixing detail, calculations of safe working loads, then writing a report containing recommendations and drawings of design improvements if applicable.

2 Design and calculations for a hand-operated girder crane.3 Detail design and Autocad drafting for a Pumpstation with an approximate

capacity of 3200 L/sec. This was as a contractor for Irritek.4 Design of large mobile chicken sheds which were designed to be dragged a

distance of 12m by a tractor every week to enable the chooks to get fresh pasture. These sheds were required to be flat-packed for ease of transportation, with final erection the responsibility of the customer. This work included the collection and collation of information, structural calculations and conceptual design, and detail design and drafting to the point of manufacture.

5 Autocad drafting of Pipes and headwalls.6 Calculations of the estimated strength of concrete walls in a grain bay. These

were hampered by lack of exact knowledge of the internal reinforcement.7 Autocad drafting of a proposed floor plan of a factory office.8 Rating of and design for a second-hand gantry crane for a ship, to be erected

at a local business.9 Design of a tarp-layer to fit a bale-grab on a forklift. 10 Inspection of a 45-tonne crane after an incident – found no damage and

provided a report.11 Performed column bending and strength calculations for an existing cotton gin

and its columns/machine supports. Designed and drafted a retrofit to solve the problem.

12 Various Autocad drafting jobs for Irritek, mainly involving quick drawings of proposed pivot and lateral installations for large farm sprinkler systems.

Irritek June 2000 to November 2002Design Engineer

1 Required to perform a wide range of design and drafting tasks, often under the pressure of deadlines.

2 Work included pipe flow and friction calculations, pipe system design and analysis, and the preparation of system performance predictions.

3 Other tasks included selection of pumps, engines, belt drives, clutches and drivelines, as well as detail design and Autocad drafting of supporting frames, etc, for the above.

4 As well as pipe systems and pump stations, I also designed, performed stress calculations for, and drafted walkways, staircases, beltguards, shaftguards, trash elevators, trash conveyers, roofing and shedding, 3 small cranes, a rotabucket, a rolling shed and various other things.

5 I have designed concrete slabs, including selection of and calculations for reinforcement bars. Further duties involved site visits, evaluations, and surveys and measurements, as well as occasional customer liaison.

6 I drafted almost every Irritek-manufactured product in my time there, and compiled a Autocad block library for the future use of Irritek.

7 Developed a spreadsheet to calculate water velocity and pressure in piping systems, as well as pump performance. This was very useful for a range of purposes including calculation of fuel consumption and determination of dam filling times.

Hunter-Douglas September 1999Engineer/Drafter (1-month Contract)

Planned and drafted a window and blind factory rearrangement, including measurement, Autocad drafting, and some design of factory, machine position and materials storage, as well as suggestions for optimum space utilisation.

Bathurst Council March to August 1999Autocad Drafter (5-month Contract)

Conducted a major updating of Council's computerised reticulation records, involving mainly Autocad drafting work of water pipes and sewage, and included detailed examination, correlation, updating, and some correction of BCC records.

2 Second contract was to advise on the best methods of changing lake lane cable widths, as required for different events.

Cool Design, Alice Springs February to September 1997Drafter (Contract)

1 Predominantly Autocad drafting with some air conditioning design. 2 Assembled an Autocad block Library.

Forrester's, Alice Springs June to November 1996Drafter (Contract)

1 Autocad drafting with calculations, costings, and design of refrigerative air conditioning and evaporative cooling systems, ducting, and some piping.
