Latent PowersThe Last Great Conflict----A. J. Tomlinson

Within the breasts of the people of this generation dormantly lies possibilities, which ifnot discovered, brought forth and utilized will rob mankind of much good. Men of science teach and believe that there are great stores of treasures hidden in theearth and sea and sky, for the use of man, undiscovered and undeveloped, and are

proving their belief in this by making continuous research. Holes are being drilled in the earth beneath; soundings and searchby means of divers and glasses are in constant use, seeking for the discovery of the unknown in the sea. Men are not only looking at the material within their reach on the surface of the earth and below the surface, but they alsohave a distinguished upward gaze. We are told that powerful guns have been dragged up the mountain sides to highest peaksand placed with the muzzle upward, heavy charges poured into them, which when discharged hurled the balls with suchvelocity, that they pierced hole in the sky to an unknown height. Plans have been formulated for attaching wires to these ballswith a hope of forming a channel or medium by which something of the unknown could travel like a flash of lightening downto the home of man, while the ball was at its greatest height. For years balloons have been harnessed, and loaded with human life, cleaving the sky to a great height, the inmates riskingtheir lives in a little basket hung to a mere canvass loaded with hot air or gas; all with the hope of discovering that which isout of reach of the ordinary walks and attainments of life. In recent years the airships, or flying machines are making theirway through the upper regions carrying their load of precious freight in the form of human flesh, the intellect of which haveambitions pent up within their own knowledge, with a hope of discovering something of the unknown to harness it for theuse and development of man. As Columbus ventured out from pleasant surroundings into the high seas in search of a shorter passage to the rich spicesof India, and instead brought to the knowledge of the inhabitants of the eastern hemisphere the rich country in which wedwell, which has proven to be the best and grandest country of the world, so men are looking downward and upward. Theyare bounding and plowing through the unknown above with aspirations no doubt in many cases that are never whispered tothe dearest friends, lest they should be mocked or met with attempts to discourage. Astronomers are not idle in their sphere of discovery, but are constantly producing new and more powerful glasses for thepurpose of discovering, if possible, new worlds with their inhabitants and peculiar genius that even if there may be no wayof communication, their system, plans of customs might be discovered and brought down to our world for use. Wireless telegraphy is another factor, in the hands of men by which it is hoped that they may be able to so attune theirinstruments that they will harmonize with and cause to vibrate the chords of a similar instrument operated by the inhabitantsof Mars or some of the other planets. In the physical world men are spending sleepless nights and hazarding their lives with a hope of making some valuablediscovery. Men of inventive genius have shut themselves up with no food or companions, while they engage their mind onsome scheme while the disconnection and the whole train of thought be cut asunder and the model in the mind entirely lostbefore it could become a literal fact that had form and could be onserved. No disturbance is raised; no umbrage is taken against any of the aforesaid ventures, no matter how insane the views andundertakings, but the world looks on with admiration and applause. Even great rewards are offered for new and valuedinventions. Thus the physical dynamite are brought into use to unearth the unobserved. Diving bells and torpedo-boasts areassisting men down in the depths of the sea. Balloons and airships are carrying them above in the air, all in search of theunseen and unknown. The physical world is full of excitement, wild prophecies and projects. Should the spiritual world allow their contemporaries to outwit them? Should the Christian world fold their hands inslumber, sleep long and eat plentifully, and allow the world by going hungry and arising early, to win the prize for energy, wit, longsuffering, perseverance, grit and determination? Jesus said, “The children of this world are in their generation wiserthan the children of light.” But should it be so? With the same untiring effort on the part of the Christian world, many ofthe unseen and unknown blessings in God’s store-house might be discovered and harnessed for the glory of God, the use ofman for the hastening of the return of our Lord. Latent powers are now lying dormant, unused and unknown in the bosomsand within the reach of many, many today. Within the grain of wheat is a germ of life, fraught with great possibilities for the sustenance of man by a continual growthand increase as it is placed in the soil, where that germ of life will burst forth into real action. I just feel so with many younglives of today. With proper environments and under certain conditions, those latent powers will spring into use, and not onlysurprise friends and acquaintances, but will in many instances surprise even the persons themselves, because of the successesand exploits wrought.

Page 7: Alabama Update August/September 2013

The grain of wheat, though in it is that germ of life, can lie dormant in the dry granary, and finally wither, dry up and blowaway as dust. So with men and women in the Christian world today. Men and women love their homes, their friends andcompanions; and it is almost impossible to get them out of the old family customs and ruts. Like the grain of wheat, althoughthe possibilities and powers for great achievements and exploits for God are in their breasts, yet they can stay at home, andfollow in the common rote of life, and finally wither away spiritually, dry up and blow away. Peter and John ran to the sepulcher, when they heard that Jesus had disappeared, stooped down and entered in and sawthe linen clothes and napkin, but afterward quietly came out and walked away to their own homes, and Mary alone tarrieduntil she saw the vision of angels, and a little later the Lord Himself, and held a conversation with Him. There are gigantic possibilities within our reach in the vast illimitable and immeasurable realm of grace, if we will onlyput forth as much energy and effort to explore and search after them as men do in the physical and scientific world. We areaccorded the privilege of looking through a more powerful lens than astronomers have ever invented. We can look, if weclose our eyes from the seeing of evil, until we can behold the King in His beauty. The wireless telegraphy and other wonderful and marvelous inventions of man are only mere specks in comparison to thatwhich is attainable by the people of God in this generation. Read the wonderful words of promise: “And to make all mensee what is the fellowship (partnership, familiar intercourse) of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath beenhid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto principalities and powers in heavenly placesmight be known BY THE CHURCH the manifold wisdom of God, according to the eternal purpose which He purposed inChrist Jesus our Lord: in who we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him...that ye being rooted andgrounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what if the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and toknow the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Eph. 3: 9-19) Farewell scientists. Farewell astronomers. Farewell philosophers. Farewell inventive geniuses, explorers and searchersafter the unknown; men of worldly wisdom, wit, ambition and grit. “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantlyabove all that we ask or think, according to the power (latent or unused; germ of life like is in the grain of wheat) that workethin us, unto him be glory IN THE CHURCH by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end.” (Eph. 3: 20, 21). We should certainly aspire to that high position spoken of and described by Paul, that we might attain to that height in therealm of grace that Christ has obtained for us; that He knows we can reach through Him if we bestir ourselves as He knowswe can, and that has been placed within our grasp. “Not as though I had already attained (says Paul), either were alreadyperfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 3: 12). If people would engage themselves in constantly moving on to these higher plains of experience there would be less timefor criticism fault-finding, backbiting, caviling over doctrines, and divisions. It is always those who are behind in the racethat can see the mistakes, miss-steps and faults of others who are ahead of them. Those who are ahead are so bent on winningthe prize that they have no time to look at the faults and mistakes of others, and they are far ahead in the race that they do notfeel the coldness that surrounds the lukewarm and fault-finder in the rear. This world must be evangelized. “This gospel of the kingdom (power) must be preached in all the world,” in our day. We must not shift this responsibility to a future generation as all other generations have done. There is enough latent powernow in men and women, if brought into use, to evangelize this world in five years and usher in the coming of our King. Thereare possibilities in our young men and young women, and the middle-aged as well, if we were not quenched and locked downby the worldly environments, idle matrimony, ungodly and ‘unequally yoked together’ marriages, to fire this world with afear of God and His power, as Sampson’s foxes fired the corn fields of the Philistines. Oh for a million men and women to burst forth, with such holy ambition, with every unused power in full use, like mad-men to strike terror and fear to all the half-hearted religionists of the day! John Brown, who with only eighteen mendetermined to abolish slavery by seizing the arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, lost his life, but won a place in history because of hisboldness and bravery. General Grant rode back and forth on his gallant steed before his great army, and cheered andencourage them on in the battle until the victory was won, although scores and hundreds of his soldiers fell on the fieldweltering and perishing in their own blood. Should not these daring deeds of reckless bravery put to shame our weak-kneedreligious enthusiasm? Isn’t our cause of far greater importance? Shouldn’t we be stimulated to thevery highest pitch to fight in this most glorious of all battles? Now while we arein the last great conflict can we be satisfied to remain behind where we can seeothers trudging on in advance, or rushing heedless and reckless into the thickestof the fight? Rouse, ye people! This is the last great conflict! The battle is on! Rush into it to win or die on the field! Look ahead! See the red flag as it wavesin the breeze! Behold the enormous possibilities unused within your own breast! “PRESS TOWARD THE MARK, FOR THE PRIZE OF THE HIGH CALLINGOF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS!”

God’s love is still reaching

out to our Dakota Sioux

friends.

On June 9 and 10 the Patesth th

- Ken, Kay, Shane, Tamera,

Justin and Cory traveled to

Sisseton, South Dakota to

m in i s t e r t o t h e N a t iv e

Americans. We were able to

carry approximately ½ ton of

good winter clothing, plus,

quilts, blankets and sleeping

bags to help equip them for the

harsh winters they endure.

While we were there, Pastor

Shane was able to lead three of

the neighborhood to Christ.

There was a contact made

with one of their youth which

had been a real challenge in the

past. This young lady made a

real friend of Tamera and was

crying the night before we left

saying, “I don’t want you to go.”

The children had a good time

making crafts during a day

session of Bible story and play

time.

A huge “Thank You” to

Short Creek, Green Pond,

Haleyville and Parrish Churches

for the super support for this

trip. God bless you.

This month our church in

Berezino had evangelization.

The team from our Mogilev

rehab center came to Berezino

for two days to serve people.

They witnesses to people on the

streets, told people about God,

prayed and shared their

testimonies on how God

changed their lives. We ordered

special T-shirts for the team with

words: “Serving to people we

serve to God”. Pastor Arthur

spoke with one girl and then

prayed for her. She is 28 years

old and already has a drug

addiction for 10 years. She said

that she wants to quit but don’t

know how. His story of how

God delivered him influenced

her greatly. During that time,

our team prayed with 15 people

and 6 of them accepted Jesus

Christ as their Lord and Savior.

That outreach was so beneficial

not only for Berezino church but

also for guys from rehab center.

They were exited to go on the

streets and serve people. And

we are planning to do that more

often. And next service on the

streets will be August 16-18,

2013. Please pray for it.

Two month ago Pastor

Arthur received a notice that the

church no longer can rent that

building for Sunday services.

We prayed and God provided

bigger place in better location.

Today our new location is

almost full. We praise God for

that.

Last Sunday one homeless

guy visited Mogilev church.

Despite his bad look people

from the church serve him and

showed him love. But on the

next day he broke into the

church and stole all microphones

and some parts from the sound

system. Pastor Arthur said to

me that we never know what will

happen but we must accept and

love every body who came to

our church.

This summer we decided to

hold three camps in our three

churches. In Berezino church

the camp will be on July 20-22.

It’s going to be the kid’s camp

where the most of the children

are fatherless. In Mogilev

church camp will be in the

middle of July. The church

invites many unbelievers. So

it’s going to be outreach camp.

And in Minsk church we already

had a camp. It was a great time

of fellowship for everybody and

unity. Three people were

baptized in the river for the first

t im e . T h a n k G o d fo r

everything!

With Love,

The Hope of the world is that

the body of Christ will arise

in the strength of its Lord to

do the work of Christ for His

glory.
