Activity: Spot Premix Patching Activity Code: 6010 (Hand Operation) Effective Date: October 1, 2014

DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE Minor patching small areas of paved roadway or paved shoulder with hot or cold premix bituminous material and hand tools to minimize abrupt depressions, potholes, edge failures, upheavals, and other potential surface deficiencies.

AUTHORIZATION AND SCHEDULING Schedule the repair of surface deficiencies as soon as practical after they are discovered.

WORK METHODS AND NOTES

1. Utilize appropriate traffic control devices. 2. Clean the surface failure area and square up

depressions and edges. 3. Apply tack coat of liquid asphalt. 4. Spread bituminous material. Material should be

placed in layers not exceeding 3 inches in depth. Each layer should be tamped before the next layer is placed.

5. Compact material with hand tamper, truck wheels, or roller.

6. Final layer should be flush with pavement after final compaction.

7. Patches at the edge of pavements are not to extend beyond the original pavement edge.

8. Clean up work area. Sweep loose material off road surface.

9. Terminate traffic control.

Activity: Major Premix Patching Activity Code: 6020 (Machine Operation) Effective Date: October 1, 2014

DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE Major patching of distortions, rutting, and surface irregularities with premixed bituminous material to minimize rutting, grade depressions including depressions at bridge ends, settlements, and other surface irregularities. Includes replacing concrete surface with bituminous material.

AUTHORIZATION AND SCHEDULING Schedule this work to insure coordination with scheduled division-wide resurfacing operations.

NOTE - Extensive resurfacing of long sections is to be established as a project in the resurfacing program.

WORK METHODS AND NOTES

1. Utilize appropriate traffic control devices. 2. Mark appropriate limits of area to be leveled. 3. Sweep surface to remove loose material (as

required) Blade off high spots with motor patrol when necessary.

4. Apply light bituminous tack coat on area to be leveled.

5. Dump premix from trucks and spread with motor patrol. Each layer of premix should not exceed 3 inches between compactions.

6. Hand rake excess premix over butt joints and feather the edges before rolling.

7. Roll each layer of premix immediately after it has been spread.

8. Make sure the final layer matches the existing surface and pavement edge.

9. Clean up work area. Sweep loose material off road surface.

10. Terminate traffic control. * NOTE - Fewer trucks and employees are needed for shorter haul distances.

Activity: Skin Patching Activity Code: 6030 Effective Date: October 1, 2014

DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE Patching small sections or isolated areas of bituminous roadway or paved shoulder surface using hand tools and hot pot to apply liquid asphalt and aggregate. This application minimizes extensive cracking, raveling, spalling, and shallow surface failures and delays further deterioration of the surface.

AUTHORIZATION AND SCHEDULING Schedule this work on small areas where raveling or alligator cracking allow water to penetrate the surface. This Activity should not be performed where a structural deficiency exists or where there is sufficient deterioration to justify Strip Patching (6040) or resurfacing.

This application minimizes cracking, raveling, spalling, and shallow surface failures, and delays further deterioration of the surface.

DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE Cleaning and sealing random cracks in concrete pavement, including the edge crack between concrete pavement and asphalt pavement or asphalt shoulder. Also included are any nonfunctioning joints or cracks. (See activities 6110 and 6120 for sealing contraction and expansion joints.)

AUTHORIZATION AND SCHEDULING Schedule this work after field inspection indicates that the existing crack sealers are no longer effective or that random cracking has developed which would allow water to damage the base material.

Activity: Concrete Pavement Repair Activity Code: 6130 Effective Date: October 1, 2014

DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE Correcting and repairing broken slabs, edge failures, spalls, corner breaks, and severe cracking in concrete pavement. Includes all major work such as removing part or all of a slab section, pressure grouting, pressure jacking, joint repair, and repair or replacement of base and sub-base. This Activity includes all concrete pavement repairs not covered in Activities 6050, 6110, and 6120.

AUTHORIZATION AND SCHEDULING Authorize and schedule this work throughout the year after field inspection indicates that the severity of the defect justifies this type of repair.

WORK METHODS AND NOTES

1. Utilize appropriate traffic control devices. 2. Remove broken sections of concrete pavement. 3. Repair base, sub-base, and reinforcing steel as

required. 4. Provide for proper construction joints as necessary

by sawing or trimming existing pavement. 5. Provide from work if adjacent to paved shoulder or

asphalt pavement. 6. Pour concrete (fast setting, if applicable), finish joint,

and apply sealer. 7. Allow for sufficient curing time. 8. Terminate traffic control.
