Candidate Name Alexander MarshCandidate Number JENNI HAS THIS, YOU NEED TO ASK HER AND SHE WILL GIVE IT TO YOUPathway Film and TelevisionProject Title History of the T.I.M.E agency part 4: EarthSection 1 : Rationale (approx. 150 words) Minimum 135 Maximum 150This project is about continuing the development of the characters of time agent while also explaining the history of the overall universe while also giving some much-needed backstory to my version of time agent.I am interested in making an in-universe documentary that can be watched by new comers and fans of time agent though the audience requires very little information as this documentary will explain most the in-universe history, the characters will also be developed so new comers do not have to worry about having to watch any previous time agent works. The audience will be interested as the in-universe documentary will blend real history with a fictional one and the fact of watching a character having to recount events such as war would be interesting to watch not only from a new comer’s point of view but from a characters point of view as well.

Section 2 : Project Concept (approx. 200 words) Minimum 180 Maximum 200The format of this project would be a mix between a short film and a documentaryThe aim of this documentary is to provide some historical context using both real and fictional events to explain the previous films I have done. I’m also wanted to make an in-universe documentary as very little people have done this before and I it would make an interesting challenge.Ben Burtt (Sound design)- Burtt’s ability to make sounds in Foley and soundscapes will help in creating a soundscape for the events and planets that would be featured.Alec Peter (Screenplay)- Working on the prelude to Axanar documentary (on which my work is based) Peters script will allow to adapt the history of the time agent universe into a script. My research will consist of watching several documentaries including:

1. the war (Directed by Ken Burns)2. World war two in colour (By Johnathan Martin) 3. Prelude to Axanar (Directed by Christian Gossett

The target audience is would ideally be 15+ (due to language) who like sci-fi and drama. My role in this production will primarily be directing, screenwriter and actor On a technical level, all I need are cameras, microphones and an editing software.

Section 3 : Evaluation (approx. 150 words) Minimum 135 Maximum 150I intend on recording the work through progress trackers that would be reviewed by peers and colleagues. I will also make a production diary, that will be filled with pre-productions designs and showing what happens on the day. It will also contain post-production notes and screenshots.Proposed Research Sources and Bibliography (Harvard Format)

CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION

This project portfolio is a report of my Extended Project for my second year UAL Diploma in Film and Television, this project is an in-universe documentary set inside the doctor who universe which has been basis for my previous works and will explore the history of them. This first chapter of the project portfolio presents the background of my project starting with writing about myself, what I learned on my course and who or what inspired me for my project. This is followed by me explaining what my project is about and why it is important. The chapter concludes with my research plan.”

The Background of my Project I want to continue and create new content for my own spin off, Time agent Aftermath but this time I want to try and do something different but still with a sense of familiarity.

The idea was originally started in the first year of film and television, though the first film was less than successful, I wanted to continue it as I didn’t want to give up on the project that I had initially invested so much time into it. Despite the first film almost burning me out, I’m very much passionate about making this universe work.

The premise of my current project is basically a documentary that will explain the history of the earth branch Temporal Investigations and Migration Enforcement (T.I.M.E) Agency with using previously established characters as interviewee’s, the documentary will delve into certain events like the last great time war and of course, the most recent history of time agent.

I seek to entertain people while informing them of the history my show this will relate to my audience for people who like sci-fi and drama.

Who am I?By Alex Marsh

Before College

Figure 2 the first time agent movie also known as the explorer movie (footage taken by Tilly Penn, screenshot by me)

Before the college years and well before my ability to write good scripts, I made and stared in many ‘films’ that I had produced with my friends in the village. My most noticeable film was the explorer movie which was one of my biggest pre-college efforts at the time.

Combining the efforts of almost eight people was a nightmare but was not as messy as the editing process while filming was completed early 2015, the actual film was not fully completed until late 2017. The film would get an additional re-edit and remaster in 2018 but would not be released to the public (YouTube).

Though some of my secondary projects included a gaming series known as meanwhile battles which at the end of the day it was me pointing a camera at a TV screen and from creative standpoint, was not fulfilling.

Another string of projects was also making music, though these pieces of music wasn’t exactly any good.

Though most of what I made was disastrous, I would make several smaller projects but would eventually stop due to various issues.

10

The college years

Figure 3 the first iteration of meanwhile productions with (LtoR) Ben Smith, Sam Adams, Xander Xavier and myself (Photo taken by Ben smith)

After failing most of my GCSE’s and frankly not having much option, I enrolled at Canterbury College for the media production course. Despite my less than stellar grades, I was placed into level two (for reasons I still don’t get even today).

A few months down the line I would create the first iteration of meanwhile productions (see above), we helped make each other’s videos. On my side of things, I would have to say the most creatively fulfilling was a series of videos known as the ‘Gee Trilogy’. Until the remastered versions came out, I think these videos were best I ever made.

Otherwise, the only other work I produced were literacy based during level two.

In the first year of level three, I had made some minor videos including the experimental video the interview and an Avid video, later with the help of what now could be considered the second iteration of meanwhile productions (Kieran Buckner, Bill Hutt, Danielle Bradley and Daniel Perry), I created some more basic videos such as Hello, Equipment task, the last day and the first time agent short I created, Entering the T.I.M.E agency (Though non canon due to the quality of it).

It’s also around this time that I had re-edited and remastered the explorer movie but as previously stated, it was not released to the public.

The final big project of year one was the now infamously long, Time agent aftermath.

This project while easy to film and finalize (thanks to the experiences of the explorer movie), the editing proved to be challenge as what I promised to be a ten to fifteen-minute video had actually became a thirty six minute episode.

The tutors were not impressed.

Despite this I passed into the second year with me being at the centre of many jokes about video lengths, much to my bemusement and later amusement.

The current times

Figure 4 Screenshot taken from the time agent short 'Odyssey' (Footage by Danielle Bradley)

Despite the Luke warm reception that time agent managed to gather, I wanted to dedicate the rest of my work making this new universe work.

Though before I did any other work towards it, I did some minor lighting and audio videos which included a remake of a scene from star trek enterprise. This short while not the greatest of videos, I feel that it marks my improvement from that point.

I also did I fairly bad green screen video, which should probably never had existed but did lead onto the so-so video simply known as bread. Though I only edited and acted in the project I think it’s one of the better films I have been involved in, the bread project that I featured in, was directed and made by Danielle Bradley.

Officially the next video was a Foley/sound task which would be based on the time agent concept I had earlier grasped at. Titled ‘Odyssey’, this video while not visually fulfilling is as I’m told “would be very good if it was part of a radio play”. This video while receiving mixed peer reviews, would be the continuing steps for time agent.

The next video was an experimental task, having been placed into groups and decided to do lighting and music. This task became killer romace , this task was a group effort and did feature me as the main ‘protagonist’ it also would introduce me to the art of music remixing (which I would use a lot).

I would also help Danielle Bradley with another one of her projects known as Future omens (though this is my title for it as we had edited separately), though at this time I would also remaster three of my previous works. The Gee trilogy remastered was my attempt at remastering my favourite series of work, while the remastering’s of my work got very little attention, I feel I had done a good job re-editing the footage.

After this I was asked to make a documentary about myself to coincide with the cultural context power point that I had made. The cultural context video was me explaining what my influences were and how they guided me to wanting to make films (So basically this who am I document but with bad audio). This video is something I didn’t really care about as I rarely liking talking about myself.

Finally, I had done three more videos:

1. Distractions (by Megan’s Raines); while technically owned by Megan Raines, I had done my own edit. This film was more comedic and lighter in tone than some of my other works. This short film was entirely produced by Megan Raines and Richard Alexander, I merely edited the film on my own time.

2. Research and Experimentation ; This video showed what I have learnt from my research of sound design through the ages.

3. Asclepius ; the original video that spawned the previous one, Asclepius was the continuation of the time agent saga.

And that brings it up to now where I had to write this document explaining my journey to this point.

Skill Focus

Figure 5 A small showing of Nevidia’s theme from Asclepius which was later turned into a theme excerpt

My skill focus is sound and music, I think over the last few projects I have created, the sound design and music have been some of the best aspects of the videos.

With my FMP, I hope to incorporate the Foley skills to create some unique sci fi sounds and to make a quite realistic sound scape that would sound like it was from that time or place, for example, trying to create a sound scape for a sci fi bridge or a war.

Additionally, I’ve practiced a lot with making custom music (to varying degrees of success) and want to incorporate it into my videos (to which I have done before) but want to compose and entire soundtrack for a video rather than using copyright free music and excerpts from actual copyrighted sources.

What is my project about? The topic of this project is lore (history) and will focus on the history of the T.I.M.E agency as up to now, the in-universe history of my previous works is kind of confusing. Plus, the documentary format will allow me to give the characters some exposition without demeaning them or making it feel forced.

My role in this project is Writer, Director and actor.

Why is my project important?

This project is important to me as I want to continue the spin off that I have created and I want to flesh out some of the characters in a way that doesn’t feel unnatural.

CHAPTER 2 - LITERATURE AND MEDIA PRODUCT REVIEWS

Introduction The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter. Provide evidence that you are well informed even before you start your project.!

For example

A large body of literature (films, web pages, literature, magazine articles, etc.) exist on the short film; roles of the; writer, producer and film director; the topic of unemployment and youth crime, and professional skills and practices. My research using these sources provide a basis for my Extended Project and final short film.

This chapter will present several literature reviews on a range of different relevant subjects that I have consulted for this project. I will be looking specifically at unemployment and youth crime, particularly government statistics as to the current level of both. I will show how it influenced my further research, study and development of the final idea for the project. The chapter will start with my Practitioners Report looking at two prominent film directors. I will also look at similar Media Products that have helped me to consider my project and its relevance to my target audience and my skills based. The chapter concludes with ideas and key conclusions of all the resources used and research sourced in this chapter.

Literature Review Examine and explore existing media products, practices and ideas in spirit of creativity and imagination

A Literature Review starts with your research question – What are you trying to find out? Once you have your research questions, you can start. A Literature Review enables you to gather information, knowledge ideas etc from existing media sources, such as books, articles, journals, podcasts, web sites, documentaries etc. As you gather this information, it will either support your original research question, or provide you with new areas to research, or even make you consider an alteration in your research plan, and a change to your research questions. As you read and analyse the different source material, you will start to synthesis (Look at the Literature Review PowerPoint to remind you of what that is) the information you are acquiring. Your analysis and synthesis is what you detail in your Literature Review. It allows you to clearly and academically demonstrate that you have researched and analysed the existing sources relevant to your media product.

Page 18: alexandermarshfilmtv17.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewA Literature Review starts with your research question – What are you trying to find out? Once you have your research questions,

Media Product ReviewIn this section you need to examine and explore existing media products, media practices and ideas in the spirit of creativity and imagination. Identify different media projects related to your media project. Record and analyse findings.

What are similar media products and how is your work related to them? (consider yourself and your project in relation to similar media products)

How have similar media products influenced my project?

How have they shaped my project?

What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products, how it influenced your perspective and ideas for the project)

How does this media review inform your knowledge of your Target Audience?

Practitioners ReportYou need to produce TWO Practioners Reports. This is a combined literature and media review, that focus’ on a key practitioner who is either relevant to your subject, your skill, or simply has been very influential on your creative decision making that has informed your choice of media project.

As for all research you need a research question, are you going to produce a bibliography for them, detailing where they started, and following their career, chronologically through to current day? Or you could focus on their motivation behind the production of a key film. Or you could look at their filmography and structure a report around that.

18

Page 19: alexandermarshfilmtv17.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewA Literature Review starts with your research question – What are you trying to find out? Once you have your research questions,

Requirements for my Creative Media Production ProjectIn this section, you should present your findings of the media industry and jobs related to your media project.

Demonstrate the requirements of the media industry relevant to your project – organizational structures, roles and processes. Look at the work you did in Unit 3

Detailed job analysis – core skills and abilities required for my project Detail the equipment and technology relevant to the project and chosen media Health and Safety – once you have completed the Risk Assessment in Chapter 5 post

it here. Detailed Analysis of Target Audiences -refer to the work you have undertaken in your

media review above, and in the work, you do on your target audience in Chapter 3. Legal and ethical requirements that are applicable to your project

o Legal – what laws apply to your project e.g. Copyright, Health and Safety Lawso Ethical – the main issue here is representation. Who and or what are you

representing in your project? Are you making that representation ethical? Detail the following for your project

o Form – the form is a film, or a script, or photographyo Genre – I do not need to explain this!o Style – linked to genre, but a little more specific. So, if your genre is thriller,

then your style could be urban, or retro, or fantasyo Design – once you have your genre and your style you must design it. If it is a

thriller in a retro style, you need to say what retro? Are we talking 1970’s? 1950’s? same style but different design.

Detail the Skills and or Techniques needed for your projectThis should then tie in with Chapter 3 where you detail the experimentation and exploration that you have undertaken. If one of your skills needed is sound design and therefore one of the techniques needed is Foley sound, as you are going to do a detail sound design for your scene then in chapter 3, you need to have Foley experimentation and possibly also exploration of your sound design plan.

Conclusion

Answer the following questions: -

Who or what was my inspiration for my project? Refer to Chapter 1, and your “Who am I?” task to help you answer these questions.

Contextualisation of my study This is, “What was your motivation to do your project?” Refer to Chapter 1 and your Project Proposal to help you answer these questions.

CHAPTER 3 - RESEARCH, EXPERIMENTATION AND EXPLORATION

IntroductionThe introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter.

For example

“This chapter explains the original research designed and undertaken for my Extended Project. It starts with my research questions and follows by the description of the research and methods used in my project.”

This chapter is the ‘How-to’ section for the original research element of your Extended Project. In this chapter you must introduce and explain the design of your research and experimentation activities and how your information/data was collected. Remember, in this chapter, you will only write about your original research and what research activities and methods you used. In Chapter 4, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions. Secondary research about your subject is in Chapter 2.

Examples of the original research activities you may have conducted are: -

Experimentation and Skills Workshops i.e. sound, filming, editing, lighting

Exploration and photography i.e. Focus groups, Observations, Character profiles

Visual and Audio surveys

Interviews

Museum or Gallery visits

Content research

Production research i.e.. Locations, props, costumes, scenery etc.

Research DesignStart with stating the intent of your Extended Project What are you trying to achieve with this project?

Write about your overall research aim. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?” You have to base your research design on your research questions and your research Plan

Research QuestionsWrite clear research questions, detailing what you wanted to find out and why

Each piece of resarch needs to have a question, before you can start. The research activity should be supportive and relevant to the type of information you are trying to find out. The questions need to cover the three key areas of original research, as detailed below:-

20

AC 2.1 2.2 3.1 3.2 5.1 7.2

Page 21: alexandermarshfilmtv17.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewA Literature Review starts with your research question – What are you trying to find out? Once you have your research questions,

CONTENTS

Target Audience ResearchAsk yourself these questions:

Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at? Use the work you carried out in Chapter 2. Remember the genre is key, as is psychographics.

What type of audience is it? Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume.

o Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about your target audience demographic. (secondary)

o You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about your audience.

oSkills and Techniques ResearchThis has already been touched on in Chapter 2, make sure they correspond. This is your experimentation and exploration of what is needed to produce your product. Plan what skills and techniques you will need to experiment with to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project. You would have a minimum of four areas for experimentation

Filming Lighting Sound Editing

For your exploration, you would need to consider character design, location design, styling etc.

Production Research

o People needed for the production/availability o Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it

successfully o Production schedule o Budget o Recce research/location needed o Health and safety research o Visual ideas - mood board o Props o Actorso Costumes - for example

Exploration of suitable costumes for my main female character, The girl next door who maybe a killer. My research question is What is the most suitable costume for a female character, who appears “normal” but maybe a killer? I want to find out from the audience, via the means of a focus group, which costume they think appears normal, but had just a touch of the unknown, the unusual about it.

CHAPTER 4 – PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH FINDINGS

IntroductionIn this chapter, you will summarise the research and information that you collected and detail your analysis of your research. You should start this paragraph by briefly restating the topic/theme of your project (take it from Chapter 1).

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised information/data.

Research Analysis What did you learn from your research and how did it inform your project?

Review each different piece of research undertaken from both Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. Remember you have already detailed each piece of research in their relevant chapter. You are now looking at what information it produced, what did it tell you and how do you think it would help your end project; - for exampleCostume Exploration Research I undertook some exploration of the most suitable costume for my main character. Using three pictures (page 18 in Chapter 3) I showed them to my focus group, which was made up of 6 people, split equally by gender and representative of the age of my Target Audience. I cropped the head out of the picture, so it was just the clothes, not the facial expression. The Focus Group felt that Picture 3, felt more sexualised because of the shorts. Picture 1 was excluded because the scarf could be a weapon and therefore it was Picture 2. Everyone agreed that this was the most neutral image, therefore leaving the acting and directing to show the killer in her! This research has clearly shown that I need to choose clothes for my main character that are as neutral and “plain” as possible.

Explain and contextualize findings

Provide background and context of the work (refer to work produced in Chapter 1) What is it that makes me do my project? My personal experiences that influence my choices (my role in the project, how it

relates to my future possible career)

Organise and express your ideas (ideas from week 2, your Project Ideas PowerPoint. (YOUR PROJECT PROPOSAL POWERPOINT FROM WEEK 2 NEEDS TO GO HERE)

Originate a range of ideas and analyse each idea for viability List the ideas you had and explain why the chosen idea was picked and the secondary. Show your ideas Mind Mapping, include a SWOT Analysis

Conclusion

How did the research help with my project? How are you going to use the research you produced? What do you think was the most relevant piece of research? And why?

CHAPTER 5 – PRODUCTION FOR MEDIA PRODUCT

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production Pitch your Project Proposal to the Production Board

(PLACE YOUR POWERPOINT AND THE VIDEO RECORDING OF YOUR PRODUCTION BOARD PRESENTATION HERE)

Produce Pre-Production PaperworkThis will formally define your project: Location Survey; Risk Assessment; Treatment; Script; Budget; Schedule, Character Bibles, Design Documents Etc

Identify and detail the roles you will be undertaking, and the roles for other peopleDirecting (Managing the Team) Crew, Actors, Foley Artist, Sound Design, Camera, Lighting, Sound, editing (Refer to Chapter 2 and use and build on the work detailed there)

Collaborating and working as a team You will have other people in your team, you need to detail how you plan to work together to ensure that the production is a successful i.e. regular team meetings, group setup on What’s App etc

Dealing with possible production problems You may have delays, equipment breakdowns, changes in schedule, etc you need to detail how you are going to resolve them

Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume, (Use the work you produced for Chapter 2 to answer these questions)

Production Management techniques

Notes of team meetings and daily diary reflections , production and post-production schedules; call sheets, etc.

Team and individual performance monitoring Weekly check against schedule as detailed in your Production Schedule

Production Tracking – Production Diary To demonstrate progress and development of your project (photos from the shoot, screenshots from computers). You will keep Production Diary where you will detail daily production and post-production diary and reflect on your production process.

Feedback from Lecturers and Peers and Social Media Detailed in your Production Diary

Post-production Prepare material for edit and further manipulation Editing

(remember to take regular screen grabs) Preparing credits (see below) Fine tuning special effects, mixing, colour correction, rendering, compressing

(remember to take regular screen grabs) QA Testing (remember to write up feedback in your Production Diary) Critique of visual art by peers, Lecturers, Social Media

(remember to write up feedback in your Production Diary) in your Production Diary

Detail post-production of your project using screen grabs etc Assess your production and post-production process.

In your Production Diary describe, and critically analyse any production problems and the solutions you used to resolve them.

Presentation In this part of chapter, you should demonstrate ability to be able to present a creative media production project to a specified audience. Your EXTENDED PROJECT must be presented appropriately (effectively; imaginatively) and presented with suitable (relevant; purposeful) media conventions to suit the target audience.

You have been given the showcase of the Summer Shows (see calendar for dates). You need to explore the different strategies needed to present your Extended Project.

Your presentation will very much depend on the medium of your Extended Project. In the Summer Shows, there will be the possibility to screen your films, exhibit your photos, or display your scripts and Pre-production Planning Documents. You need to:-

Decide what medium is most relevant for your project and target audience, and detail why you think it is the most relevant approach.

Design your presentation, paying attention to your target audience. If you are producing a horror video, a screening at 3pm in the main street is not appropriate. You need to detail and plan all elements of your presentation, from the physical exhibition space to the supporting promotional material and supporting paperwork such as a programme.

Write about what influenced your decision to present your work in a certain way. You should look at other events which have showcased productions similar to yours, such as Trailers, Art Galleries, and Festivals.

CHAPTER 7 - PROJECT EVALUATION

Critically evaluating your final media project against the agreed requirements and parameters. Answer the following questions:

Introduce the project in your own words What was the purpose of the project?

o What did you hope to learn? How much reference material did you find?

o Do you think you could have done more? If so, explain what you think you could have done

How did you develop your ideas? List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas?

o Can you describe it? o Can you reference any influences here? - art movements, designers,

media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do?

o How did it affect your development? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what

comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily

reflections to help you with this Which technical skills, processes, methods and techniques did you use? Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you

manage to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client/lecturer think of your original concept/idea?

o How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project?

o Does it sufficiently answer your brief? (Project Proposal) Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before?

o Did the pitch go better or worse than you expected? o What was the feedback from the client/lecturer about your pitch?o What do you think you could improve next time when doing a pitch?

Did the project as a whole, go better or worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer on the project as a whole? What do you think you could improve about the project as a whole, if you did it

again?
