Students, teachers and parents were treated to a great presentation about oral hygiene followed by a yummy bake sale at Al Noor Sunday School on Nov 17, 2013. The presentation was given by Dr. Mohammad Choudry, a local dentist in the Shreveport area who’s passionate about educating children about good oral hygiene to help prevent serious dental problems later in life. Dr. Choudry kept the presentation lively with jokes, pictures and video presentations while providing valuable information about the proper way to take care of your teeth as well as integrating principles of Islamic etiquette regarding oral hygiene. Children learned that they should brush their teeth three times a day for two minutes, and that brushing their teeth before prayer actually increases their rewards up to 70 times!

Sweet Tooth, Clean Teeth Event! (Continued from page 1…)
The children had great questions at the end of the program
and Dr. Choudry even stayed after the presentation to be
able to answer all of them.
The bake sale was also a big success thanks to our event
volunteers. All of the cupcakes, cookies and other fun treats
were completely sold out!
We truly appreciate everyone’s support in bringing together
this event, and we are grateful to Dr. Choudry for sharing
very valuable information with us.

Volunteer Spotlight!
Class Supervisor, Moayad
Jamhour, has been a tremendous
asset to Al Noor Sunday School
this last year going above and
beyond his normal duties. Br.
Moayad initiated several new
activities in the school to create
fun learning opportunities for the
students. He organized the Eid
Al-Adha poster competition, the
quiz competition between girls
and boys at the end of the first
semester, and the new reading
competition.
Br. Moayad says helping educate
the young people in our
community about Arabic and
Quran is very important to him.
He works just for the love of it;
"When you love working, you
love what you're doing."
Br. Moayad has two children in
the school. One works as a
volunteer in the office and
library and the other is a student.
When he thinks about the future
of the school, Br. Moayad says
his vision is that one day it will
be even more active with many
more community members and
parents getting involved and
taking active roles in the school.

Essay Assignment: 3rd Grade Boys Learns about our Beloved
Prophet (SAW)
During the week of Al-Mawlid, many of the classes at Sunday school took some extra time to study
about the life of the Prophet (SAW) to foster a love for An-Nabi Ullah. One of the ways the 3rd
grade boys class did this was by writing a short essay about his life. We wanted to share an
excerpt from one of those essays with you:
Prophet Muhammad By Anwar Zeidan
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born in 571 AC born on Monday, April 22nd in the city Mecca. At the time that the prophet was born, Mecca was a harsh place to live. At the age of 8 he became an orphan. His father died before he was born, but now his mom died too. As that result his grandfather Abdul-Mutalib was his caretaker. He was a fair, kind, and well known man. He was good-looking and always smiled. He was illiterate, he could not read nor write. He brought many blessings for his community. One day prophet Muhammad went to look for a job and met a woman who was hiring someone to work for her. She was a widow called Khadijah and they later got married. He was 25 years old and she was 40 years old when they got married. It was only after her passing when he married again. Before he became a prophet, he used to retreat up on a mountain al hirah, where he used to always hide from enemies and meditate. He first received the revelation from God when he was 40 years old through angel jibreel. He was named by his grandfather. When his wife made him food, and if he liked it then he would first say bismillah. If he didn’t like it he would just leave it there and not complain about it. As soon as he became prophet he started to tell everyone to accept Islam. He never ate alone, without inviting others and then he ate. HE encouraged the washing of hands before and after eating food. He used to mend his clothes, repaired his shoes and as well as doing the household shopping and help his wife and the community clean. Upon visiting a person, he used to greet them and then take their permission to come inside their household. He was taught to pray by jibreel and taught him how to memorize the Quran. He sometimes prayed so much that his legs swelled. He always recited Quran by his companions while they repeated after him. He did not care where he slept; sometimes he slept on the floor. He believed in God, the angels, and in the prophets, and in the last day. He sent letters to kings and leaders beyond Arabia, inviting them to Islam. He is the savior and liberator of all women’s rights. He was the best husband to his wives. His name is now one of the most popular names in the world. He was a friend to his tribe. He was the best leader to lead a nation of might. The most equal to his people. Muhammad (SAW) invited Bilal the first black person to enter to Islam. He was a man of justice. A man of justice and a man of truth. A man of humanity, yet a man of toughness, and a man of mercy. Strict to obedience to his mother. The prophet taught us a lot of stuff, but when his Ummah is in trouble he says this out loud, “ummati, ummati.” Follow your lord Allah (swt) the one who created us and follow the teachings of me that I sent down to you. Fear your lord and his punishment for he is the eternal and ever-living one.

Parent/Teacher Conference and Potluck
Everyone loves a potluck, and the very special Parent/Teacher
Conference and Potluck event on January 5, 2014 was a great success
for Al Noor Sunday School. Everyone brought food and it was more
than enough for everyone to pile their plates high! It was a great time,
mingling and enjoying lunch before the schools very first “a battle of
the classes!” quiz competition! The quiz covering all three subjects of
Sunday school and six students chosen by the teachers represented
all the classes a boys vs girls battle! It was a tight competition, but in
the end the boys team pulled out the last points. It’s sure to be a feirce
battle next year!
The parent/teacher meetings following the quize competition went very well. Parents were able
to move from table to table in two big rooms to speak with each one of their children’s teachers.
They were able to discuss the progress of their child in each class, any concerns they might have
as well as get recommendations from teachers on how they can support their child’s learning at
home.
We hope to make this event an even bigger success next year and we appreacate all the support
of the volunteers who helped bring it together, as well as the parents who took time out of their
day to take an active role in their childn’s Islamic education.
