The recent past has seen a number of nasheed artists and performers emerge in the Muslim world. Nasheed videos, musical backgrounds and laser-lighted stages are the products of these artists.

There seems to be a certain craving for the offerings of the west, an almost insatiable hunger, that whatever Tom, Dick and Harry are doing, Zaid, Bakar and Amar must also do. If they eat bacon we’ll eat macon, if they drink cocktails, then we’ll drink mocktails.

These cravings fuelled by an endless supply of movies, TV serials and the latest top 20 have so overwhelmed our senses that we are now ushering western thought and practice into the realm of Ibaadah (worship).

Gone are the days when the Naat reciter was a man who had, at the very least, outward respect for bearing a resemblance with Rasoolullah r in his beard and dressing, where the venue was the Masjid and the atmosphere was one of reflection and sobriety.

The by-product of a society inebriated with M-TV, rave clubs and discos can yield only one possible result. Naat reciters are now ‘artists’, music is camouflaged by using beatboxing (borrowed from hip-hop) and acapella (borrowed from Christendom) and not forgetting frenzied female fans in the form of purdah-clad Muslimahs jumping on their chairs and screaming their undying love for the performing artist.

When you analyze the present scenario then the prophecy of Rasoolullah r now stands at our very doorstep, “There will appear people in my Ummah, who will hold adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments to be lawful.” (Bukhari) and “Soon there will be people from my Ummah who will consume alcohol while changing its name, on there heads will be instruments of music and singing. Allah will make the ground swallow them and mutate them into apes and swine.”(Sahih Ibn Hibban)

If Allah has prohibited something then its prohibited. End of story. If you love music so much that you cannot abide by Islam’s prohibition of it, then it is a terrible transgression but ultimately pardonable. But when you join the praise of Allah and Salaawat (salutations) of Rasoolullah r with the very thing that they have prevented, then you have made a mockery of Allah, his Rasool r and the Deen of Islam.

Question: My golf friends insist on playing a competition where the loser buys lunch. No cash exchanges hands but the loser picks up the bill at the golf course. Is this permissible?

Answer: The practice of the losing team paying for meals or giving some monetary compensation is not permissible for it is tantamount to a gamble. Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value on an event with an uncertain outcome. In this case, the players are uncertain on either losing material value by purchasing a meal for the winning team or gaining material value by receiving a meal from the losing team. (Tabyinul Haqaaiq, Raddul Muhtaar)

Question: Regarding breast feeding an adopted child. I'm aware that a child under the age of 2 should be breast-fed by the adoptive mother to establish familial ties between her and the baby. Does the child literally need to be breast fed, or is it sufficient that the breast milk be fed to the child through a bottle?

Answer:. If the milk is extracted from the mother's breast and fed to the child via the bottle, familial ties will be established. Feeding the child directly from the breast is not necessary. (Hindiyyah, Vol: 1, Pg: 344, DIT)

Question: Is the celebration of Valentine’s day and the exchanging of gifts on Valentine’s permissible?

Answer: The celebration of Valentine’s is un-Islamic for the following reasons:

، It is originally a Pagan ritual which then became a Christian practice.

، It leads to and openly encourages the perpetration of fornication and adultery.

، Introduced to children from primary school (even preschool) it encourages immoral behaviour in the child’s developing years.

For these reasons and for the preservation of our Islamic identity, it is imperative that we shun this evil. When what appears to be harmless fun later results in the loss of chastity, unwanted pregnancies, abortions and at times marriage to non-Muslims, then it will be too late to wring our hands in sorrow.

At times, one day spent in pleasing the devil often leads to years of heartbreak, misery and grief.And Allah Ta’ala knows best.

COMBAT CRIME WORKSHOP REPORTAlhamdulillah, the first Jamiat Crime Workshop was hosted most successfully. Participants were positively glued to the workshop and its demonstrations, but more importantly they left with some knowledge and awareness of how to better combat this scourge in the future. The Jamiat has already received numerous requests for similar workshops in different parts of the country. Dates to be announced.

Emergency Relief ProjectThe Jamiatul Ulama KZN undertook an emergency relief effort in response to flood damage that affected the informal settlement at Quarry Rd, Reservoir Hills, Durban. Alhamdulillah, over 250 people were given warm meals. Smiles and happiness were seen on faces were there was once despair and trauma. The Jamiat would like to thank all those who contributed to this effort.
