In fact as for those who reject faith it is the same

Whether you warn them or you don’t, they will not believe.

Allah has sealed your hearts.

And their hearing.

Momina Mateen

There are people who do not have faith, they do not establish Salah, they don’t share anything with others, they do not respect the previous Prophets and they don’t worry about the hereafter.

What is said do such people?

, when these people are told the Truth, they did not accept it.

What is the state of such people?

, it is the same of them.

What is the same?

, whether you warn them or not.

And their eyes are covered.

And there is a grievous punishment for them.

Warning them from what? Evil consequences. What will they not do?

, they will not believe. When they refused to accept, what did Allah do to them?

, He put a seal on their heart.

For example an air tight container, once you fill it with something and then seal it, nothing will come out and nothing will go in, not even air.

So Allah has sealed their hearts. And what else? , and their

hearing. And , their eyes l. What is the end of such people?

, there is a great punishment for them.

literally means to hide or conceal. Ingratitude is also (disbelieve) كفرcalled كفر.

Why?

Because it involves you covering up the favors of someone upon you.

?means to deny or to disbelieve. Disbelieving who كفر

- Their Creator- to reject the messengers sent by Him- to reject His book- to reject the message of those books.

Such a person is stubborn. When this stubbornness grows and he refuses to accept, no advice works on him and no one can convince him to do anything. This person will remain deprived of faith.

Allah gave us eyes, ears and brain for us to use. If a person has eyes but cannot see and has ears but cannot hear, this person will remain deprived of Allah’s blessings of guidance.

Who is a متقي ? A sensitive person whose heart is alive.

Who is a كفر? An insensitive person whose heart is dead.

Allah has given him all the senses but in order to gain guidance, you need to use your senses. A كفر is a person who is unable to understand anything.

His brain thinks

nothing

His eyes see nothing

His ears here nothing Nothing penetrates his heart

What are the problems a كفر

?has

Now this person needs to think of things like:

i. Did such a big sky come to existence by itself?ii. Did the Earth expand and spread itself?

iii. Did the mountains get rooted by themselves?iv. Did the sea start flowing on its own?v. Does the air blow on its’ own?

vi. Does the rain fall by itself?vii. Do the clouds fly about on their own?

You must understand that all this came into existence by a Creator. A person who doesn’t take advantage of these blessings, then Allah also does not allow these blessings or faculties to be of benefit to the person.

Why does man reject?

- Because that particular thing is harming his interest.- It is against his desires.- He may find it strange in his surroundings.- He may have to let go of something - He may have to make sacrifices to adopt it.

So what does he do?

He rejects the real truth. This way he can follow the desires of his soul happily.

In order to recognize a كفر, it is necessary to know it’s opposite. In this case it is Imaan. For instance

- Symbolizing كفر with darkness.- Symbolizing Imaan with light.

So think about it… you can only define darkness until you understand what light is.

Page 6: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7 Notes

Momina Mateen

What is Imaan?

It means to believe.

What is كفر?

It means to reject.

It also means to hide.

When does one deny?

When you know something but then reject it.

What does a كفر hide?

The Truth.

If you were told that this pen or table came into existence on its own. Would you accept it? Then think… can such a big sky be created by itself? The Earth, mountains and rivers. So there must be someone who made it all. And the one who made it… does he not also own it? Why don’t we proclaim its ownership?

What is the first thing to accept?

There is a creator of the world.

Then one who creates is also the owner.

The owner is in command of what he creates. He can be the judge of how he deals with it. But us humans were given a choice… you may or may not accept. So the one who accepts will benefit. And the one who doesn’t,

to him Allah said . As for those who reject the faith it is the same.

Page 7: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7 Notes

Al-HudaJuz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7

Momina Mateen

Allah has created the Sun and moon but they don’t have freedom of choice. They worship Allah at all times. They follow the orbit that Allah has laid out for them. Even our body is obeying Allah. The heart beats because Allah has commanded it to do so. The ears hear because Allah has commanded them to do so.

When a being who has a choice and he accepts, he is called a Mo’min. And

when he rejects he is a كفر.

So كفر means to reject. Reject what?

Allahs existence. His favors. His goodness His bounties and blessings He puts a veil on Allahs favors He doesn’t value the favors He is a person with negative thinking He is a person with no hope. He has an ungrateful attitude.

To these people Allah says . It is the same for them whether you warn them or you don’t warn them, they don’t believe. Believe what?

What you are telling them.

And what are you telling them?

A way to recognize their Rabb. To be grateful to him.

Who is a Mo’min?

The one who accepts

The one who acknowledges Allah and His blessings

The one who is grateful.

Page 8: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7 Notes

Al-HudaJuz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7

Momina Mateen

The one who does not accept or recognize Allahs blessings is an insensitive person. What does Allah say for a كفر heart?

Allah says that it’s a stone heart, narrow heart with no feelings.

. Allah has sealed their hearts. Why?

Because he did not value what Allah gave to him.

and there is a seal on their hearing. The man does not want to hear the truth.

and there is a veil on their eyes as well. The entire universe is there to bear witness that there is one Creator and yet such people will not be able to see it. What will happen to them?

there will be a great torment for them.

Why does man adopt the attitude of denial?

- He is a slave of his desires- He does not reflect on Allah’s signs- Stubbornness- Arrogant- Love of the world

meant to reject/ deny. Deny what? The Creator. How to recognize كفر

.Initially you must analyze Imaan .كفر

What is Imaan?

“Imaan means to believe and to be a Mo’min. To be a Muslim it is a must to believe in all things that the Quran tells us” :

1- I believe in Allah2- Believe in His angels.3- His(Allah) book4- His messengers until Prophet Muhammad5- The day of Resurrection6- I believe in destiny whether it is good or bad.7- I believe in Resurrection after death.

Many people believe in all these things. In theory these people will be called

Mo’min or Muslim. Whatever their actions are you cannot call them كفر.

Imaan means to accept.

It is told to us that we must judge people from their outward experience.

First characteristic of a متقي is that he believes in the unseen.

The unseen:

- Allah- The Angels- The Books- The Messengers- Day of Judgement

A كفر denies all of the unseen. So if you reject the unseen it is like rejection the Truth.

1st recognition of a كفر : he denies the truth ( any and all ).

For Imaan it is important that the heart believes and the declaration from the tongue is also important.

Page 10: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7 Notes

Al-HudaJuz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7

Momina Mateen

A Mo’min clearly declares that they are a Muslim. If you are unable to do so due to fear or humility you are not a Mo’min.

Sometimes there is a case when a man commits كفر from this heart but accepts (the religion of Islam) from his tongue—this person will apparently be called a Muslim but in reality he is not.

Sometimes there is a case when man accepts from the tongue and the heart but not from his actions. This person is also NOT called a Mo’min or Muslim.

The Prophet said: To curse a Mo’min is transgression and to kill him is كفر.

What did Iblis do?

- He had accepted from the heart and he declared from the tongue but he rejected Allahs command.

What did the hypocrites do?

- They did not accept from the heart but they accepted from their tongue. Therefore not allowing them to act upon it.

What did Pharaoh do?

- He accepted from his heart but because he was arrogant he could not accept from the tongue.

What are the types كفر?

- of heart كفر- of the tongue كفر- .of deeds كفر

Abu Lahab, Abu Jahl, Pharaoh and all those who rejected the Prophet (SAW), the Books of Allah, His Angels.

Think of the Christians and Jews, they rejected the Messenger.

Page 11: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7 Notes

- Fir’aun- Nimrud- Abu Lahab- Abu Jahl- Jews- Christians

These are the people who had the Truth before them and denied it. These

people were warned. . They did get the warning but

, they did not believe. Why?

Because Allah has taken the ability of acceptance away from them.

, Allah set a seal on their hearts, , and upon

their ears, , and upon their eyes, , is a veil.

What will be their end?

They will suffer the consequences of an evil end.

Why did they not believe? Did they really not understand? Did they really not understand the message?

For example: The Pharaoh believed at the time at which he was drowning. And it was said to him… now you believe?

Another example: the people of Mecca did they not know who Allah was? Was Allah a new thing introduced to them by the Prophet (SAW)? No. when they were asked who bring down the rain they promptly replied Allah. So if they believe in Allah… why are they called كفر?

Page 12: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7 Notes

Al-HudaJuz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7

Momina Mateen

Who were they missing out? Who was the one person they did not believe in?

- The Prophet (SAW). - They did not accept the Quean to be the book of Allah.- Few of them did not accept the hereafter.- And there were some amongst them who did not believe in Allah,

these people used to say that everything came to its being on its own… but think about it… is that true?

does not refer to a specific kind of كفر. Because now days if you see there are some people who believe in some elements of Imaan and not others.

What is the reason for كفر?

- Arrogance- Thinking great of yourself- Having faith on your own intellect - Love of this world- People fear the loss of personal benefit

These people do not realize from where or who is giving them blessings. When someone tries to tell them, they say don’t tell us, we don’t want to hear. When someone tries to show them a sign, they say don’t show us, we don’t want to see. These people want to live in their own world. They are the slaves of their own desires.

These people look at reality as it suits them. They think they are living the paradise on this world, if only they knew what is to come.

-- They have adopted a way to see the world as they want. They hear only what they want to hear.

Negative Attitude

Momina Mateen

It is a common question: If Allah sealed their heart… how is it their fault?

We are introduced to Allah has Most Merciful and Continuously Merciful. So

how did this happen ?

Allah gave everyone a heart, eyes, ears and brain of equal level. But there are some people who didn’t use these blessings of Allah. They put a veil of their desires on it.

Therefore it means that Allah took away the ability to perceive and accept the Truth away from them due to self worship and ungratefulness.

Think about it… if you were given something and you don’t use it, eventually it will rust out.

So if Allah took away this ability from them, it was their own fault.

Another common question: Today there are some people who are unaware of the Truth; they are ignorant, so how can we call them كفر?

- means to reject: once something was said, it was understood and كفرthen it was rejected.

Ways in which the Truth reaches to people:

1- The natural way—Allah gave everyone eyes and ears and then He spread out his signs and gave us his perception through them. Then Allah sent the messengers. So the people who did not get the message of the Prophet, they did not reject or disbelieve. However if a person does not realize the millions of signs around all echoing the same message that there is one message, due to the persons ignorance. If he didn’t even think whether or not there is a creator or didn’t have any relationship with the creator—this person will be questioned about the Truth that came to him. The person who was guided by the signs of nature will be questioned differently as

Page 14: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7 Notes

Al-HudaJuz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 6-7

Momina Mateen

opposed to a person who was preached to by the messengers. And this is why Allah is the Judge of Day of Resurrection.

2- Through revelations

Najashi, the Abyssinian King, was not a Muslim. He was a Christian. But when the message of Islam reached him—he accepted it. He did not pray as we do but will he enter paradise? (Only Allah knows) The Prophet (SAW) led the funeral prayer for him. Why? Because only that much of Islam had Najashi and he accepted it. He will be questioned according to that.

How much reached whom and how much did that person value it?

Levels of acceptance may vary.

Allah gave us the ability to see.

Then He gave us a choice to see good or bad. This is our test.

The Test in reality is not based on how much we accept but what our choices were.

How much did one strive for something? Did the person accept the Truth when it came to him?

Why do we disbelieve sometimes?

- Stubbornness- Arrogance- Ego- Jealousy

But there are TWO main reasons :

1- When something is against our interest then we don’t want to believe.

2- Negative thinking
