• Lichtbogenschweissen
• Widerstandsschweissen
• Strahlschweissen
• Mikrofügen
• Computer in der Schweisstechnik
The roots of welding technology in teaching and re-search can be traced back right to the year 1924. First training courses for welders and tests were carried out in the “Institute for Machinability of Materials”, chaired then by Privy Councillor A. Wallichs. In 1951, “Welding Manufacturing Technologies” with Prof. Dr.-Ing. K. Krekeler as the principal became an independent teaching discipline. The lectures: Welding Manufacturing I, “Welding and Cutting Tech-nologies”, Welding Manufacturing II, “Material Behav-iour in Welding” and Welding Manufacturing III "Design and Strength of Welded Structures” are partly compul-sory, partly optional subjects among the general course of studies Mechanical Engineering: Production- and Construction Technology. The lectures “Welding and Cutting Technolo-gies/Welding Processes” and “Material Behaviour dur-ing Welding/Welding Metallurgy” are among the com-pulsory as well as the optional subjects of the master studies Production Engineering and Automotive Sys-tems Engineering and are held in German as well as in English. Contribution to other lectures: “Material Applications”, graduate course of studies
in Mechanical Engineering – Materials Technology “Micro Systems Technique”, graduate course of
studies in Mechanical Engineering – Micro Sys-tems Technique
“Simulation Techniques”, master course of studies in Simulation Techniques in Mechanical Engineer-ing
The experts from the industry are being informed about the latest developments in research by ISF-seminars and colloquiae which are held regularly twice a year. The “Aachener Schweisstechnik Kolloquium” (ASTK), taking place every second year, stands - with its lec-tures held by international experts – as an example for the connection between academic teaching and practi-cal problems. By national and international cooperation with different institutes, societies for the advancement of scientific research and the industry, the institute became well-established. Research and development are applying to the five fields mentioned in the following:
• Arc Welding
• Resistance Welding
• Beam Welding
• Micro Joining
• Computers in Welding

Herstellung eines längsnahtgeschweissten Rohres Manufacturing of a longitudinally seam welded pipe
Motivation and Objectives
Macroscopic material properties are determined by their microstructure, i.e., by the spatial distribution of elements, defects and orientations.
The microstructure is, in the course of the production chain of a part, subject to changes, as shown sche-matically at the example of a longitudinally seam welded pipe. The microstructure can be intercepted right up to subatomic dimensions. Star-ting in the weld pool, the microstructure and along with it the property spectrum of the material is altering during the process. By a specific alteration of the microstruc-ture via the control of the manufacturing method, the properties of a material can be altered to a large degree.
The objective of the Special Research Section 370 is the model description of these influences and their constant application to the net-value added chain of a product. The second matter of concern in this project is the dimensions covering description of material properties by means of connection of physical models to the macroscopic level, where they can be used sci-entifically.
The ISF is participating in the following project sections:
A1 Modelling of flow pheno-mena during solidification
A2 Modelling of the micro-structure during solidification of casts
B2 Heat treatment of metal materials in stationary and non-stationary temperature fields
C3 Material properties at low temperatures Other institutes, participating in this project:

Objectives of the Special Research Section 440
The objective of the special research section „Assem-bly of Hybrid Micro Systems“ is to determine the tech-nical fundamentals for assembly and joining in a hy-brid, i.e., non-monolithic construction. The process principles which allow flexible manufacturing of prod-ucts in small- and medium-sized lots are to be devel-oped. From among the five process sections – han-dling, joining, process monitoring, materials and de-sign - the joining of similar up to dissimilar materials will be investigated for the field of joining. Micro elec-tron beam welding, which is dealt with in subproject B4, is based on the combination of welding and moni-toring by means of a scanning electron microscope. While for monitoring substrates a high dissolution at low coupled beam energies is important, for welding high energy input and high power density are needed. The necessary technical modifications are primarily applying to electromagnetic and mechanical compo-nents of the beam manipulation. Especially metal ma-
terials in the dimensional range of 25 up to 200µm are joined as parts. In the subproject B8 with the main topic „Micro Adhesive Bonding“ the application of ad-hesive in smallest possible volumes, the joining of mi-cro parts by means of bonding and the properties of the micro adhesive layers are investigated. Theoretical
considerations are the fundamentals for the analysis of the wetting and flow phenomena, which are deter-mined by the rheology of the adhesives and the sur-face tensions. The objective of the project is the de-velopment of know how for the production of defined
adhesive layers with lateral measures below 100µm.

Motivation and Objectives
Nowadays modern, combined gas- and steam turbine
power stations are capable to achieve total efficiencies
of 58% when fired with natural gas. At temperatures of
1230°C in gas turbines the load limit for the used ma-
terials with special cooling measures is reached.
The objective of the special research sector 561 is to
determine the technical and scientific fundamentals for
the achievement of to-
tal efficiencies of
approx. 65% for a fu-
ture combi power sta-
tion. For that purpose,
turbine entry tempera-
tures of 1350° in the
gas turbine and 650 to
720°C in the steam
turbine have to be re-
alised. These tem-
peratures can be real-
ised only be the de-
velopment of new ma-
terial solutions, com-
bined with a transpira-
tion cooling/effusion
cooling for the sec-
tionsand/or parts with
highest work tempera-
ture. The combustion
chamber parts and
gas turbine blades
shall be kept at temperatures lower than 1200°C by
this cooling on material temperatures of the load-
carrying cross-sections. Rotors and shell sections in-
side the high- and medium pressure steam turbine
shall, through perforated grid plates, be cooled to
temperatures lower than 650C, using ferritic rotor-
steels, the guide plates and shell parts in the wet
steam region shall be „drained“ best possible by pla-
nar suction.
The ISF is working at suitable joining technologies for
the turbine components. Especially the laser beam-
and the impulse condenser resistance welding tech-
niques are used for the production of suitable grids.

Erste Versuchsräume 1951 First Test Laboratories in 1951
Prof. A. Wallichs, Geheimrat und Leiter vom Institut
technische Fertigungsverfahren" seinen jetzigen
Leitung an Prof. Dr.-Ing. Henning, der aus dem Team
von Werner von Braun stammte und beide
Gebiete Gebiete gleichermassen beherrschte.
The roots of welding technology at the Aachen Univer-
sity can be traced back to the year 1924. Prof. A. Wal-
lichs, Privy Councillor and Head of the „Institute for
Machinability of Materials“ made first tests with dipped
rod electrodes and held welding lectures. Then privat-
docent Dr. Fink, held welding lectures from 1933 till
1937.
It is entirely thanks to Prof. K. Krekeler who had been
research assistant for Prof. A. Wallichs, that after the
Second World War the ruined Institute was rebuilt and
called then „Welding Manufacturing, Plastics Process-
ing and Machining“.
When in 1951 the first test laboratories (50m²) in the
Wüllnerstrasse were occupied, the ISF became inde-
pendent. In three offices of the former Machine Tool
Laboratory one chief engineer and two research assis-
tants were at work. In those days the change from
manual welding with rod electrodes to machine weld-
ing (shielding gas and submerged-arc welding) took
place. Accordingly the laboratory was equipped with a
tungsten inert gas welding
unit, a gas metal arc welding
unit, a flash butt welding unit
and a spot welding machine.
In October 1959 the
“Welding Institute“ moved to
the present location in the
Pontstraße 49, together with
the “Institute for Plastics
Processing“. On Oc-
tober 1, the day of
the formal opening,
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kreke-
ler assigned the ma-
nagement to Prof.
Dr.-Ing. Henning,
who had been wor-
king for the team of
Wernher von Braun
and who mastered
both fields.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. F. Eichhorn
ISF Pontstrasse 1960
After the unexpected early death of Prof. Dr.-Ing. A.
Henning in the year 1964 it became necessary to divi-
de both institutes which were growing very fast, into
two separate institutes.
The close intellectual and perso-
nal connection of the institute to
practice is originating from the ac-
tivities of Prof. A. H. Henning in
the year 1960. He invited suppor-
ters of the Welding Institute to
Aachen, who in May 1961 esta-
blished the association „Freun-
deskreis des Instituts für
Schweisstechnik der Techni-
schen Hochschule Aachen e.V.“
In May 1965 Prof. Dr.-Ing. F.
Eichhorn became the Head of the
Welding Institute. For seven ye-
ars he had been teaching welding
technology at the Technical Uni-
versity of Stuttgart
To promote co-operation with the
industry, Prof. F. Eichhorn and
Prof. Matting of the Technical
University of Hanover established
in 1967 the „Welding University
Colloquium“ which was held once
a year and was frequented by
representatives of the industry for
discussions.
On European level the ISF,
headed by Prof. F. Eichhorn,
consolidated with other leading
research institutes, such as
„Welding Institute“ in Cambridge,
UK, headed by Prof. Weck and
the „Laboratorium voor
Weerstand van Materialen“ of the
Rijks University of Gent, Belgium,
headed by Prof. Souete. The
„European Research Institute of
Welding Technology (EFOS)“
was established.
Due to the fast expanding
research work it became
necessary to enlarge three
buildings. In November 1965 the
first enlargement took place. The
staff that had, during five years, grown from four to
twenty scientists and many modern test equipment
moved in.
In 1970, the present resistance spot welding

laboratory was built in the course of 4 months, sponsored by the Volkswagen-foundation, the Freundeskreis and by the state. Among other equipment, plas-ma-, friction- and electron beam welding machines moved in.
By means of the state, the FAHO and of the Freundeskreis the third enlargement in the form of an office building that filled an architectural gap in Templergra-
ben was opened in 1989.
National and international con-ferences about new methods like plasma-, friction-, electron-beam- and vertical welding in co-operation with the German Welding Society (DVS) contrib-uted to the promotion of these methods. On an international level the ISF was not only repre-sented by expert contributions for conferences but also by the active co-operation in the „Inter-national Institute of Welding (IIW)“. Many guest scientists, mainly from Russia, Japan and China were working in the ISF. In teaching, the expert field held a tightly anchored position dur-ing the graduate course of stud-ies for the consolidation of „Manufacturing Techniques“. Corresponding to the increasing importance of mechanisation in welding, in 1972, headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. P.Drews, the depart-ment „Process Control in Weld-ing“ was etablished.
In 1989 Prof. Dr.-Ing. U. Dilthey was assigned the new director of the ISF.
In the course of the last 10 years and under the management of Prof. Dilthey, the ISF has been rebuilt consequently. In a new test shop with approx. 450m² laboratory area and 100m² office rooms, the arc welding research work has been concentrated. Further increase was achieved in staff numbers and in the equipment with most modern weld and test units.
Today the ISF is – on an inter-disciplinar and international level
– involved in teaching, research and counselling and enjoys among experts a high reputation world-wide.
