A DAy oN SAfAriDiscover what you are likely to encounter on a typical day of game viewing, from the moment you rise to the moment you are lulled to sleep by the sounds of the African night.

Your safari day begins early, with a hot mug of coffee or tea delivered to your tent. outside, the sun is just beginning to peek over the horizon, and you emerge from your tent to behold a landscape that is stunning in its vastness and tranquility. Fortified against the early morning chill, board your safari vehicle with your driver-guide and set out on the first of the day’s game drives.

While each area has its own distinct wildlife population, there is little predicting what you will see in the bush. Elephants may gather around a watering hole; a pair of male cheetahs may be seen scanning the surroundings for signs of prey; hyena, perhaps, tear into an early-morning kill; and herds of grazing giraffes and zebras may march across the plains. Your experienced guide has a sixth sense when it comes to wildlife and never fails to get you into the heart of the action. After a few hours of game viewing, stop for breakfast, either back at your camp or at a table laid specially for you in the wild.

in Africa, the animals lie low during the mid-day heat, so you do too. back at camp, take a nap, grab a book from the common tent or simply relax on your private veranda. Later in the afternoon, set out on a second game drive, possibly combining wildlife viewing with a visit to a Maasai or Samburu village or a local philanthropic project. As the sun starts to set, you might stop at a scenic spot for a sundowner cocktail before returning to camp. Dinner in the bush is always an event, with freshly prepared, multi-course meals served at an elegantly set table. it can also be an unexpected game viewing opportunity when the animals come to a nearby watering hole for a drink, or suddenly announce their presence with a loud call. After dinner, gather around the campfire and share stories of your exciting day, stargaze under the quiet sky, or retire in preparation for another inspiring day on safari.

THE “BiG fiVE”Swapping stories in the African bush, American and European trophy hunters came to agree on the five most challenging — and thus most essential — animals to track and shoot. While the only “shooting” on an A&K safari is done with a camera, spotting the “Big Five” remains a treasured milestone for every safari traveller.

LioN The so-called “king of the jungle” actually lives in Africa’s grassy plains. Lionesses, swifter and lighter than their male counterparts, handle most of the hunting chores, while males defend the pride.

ELEPhANT The largest land animal, the elephant has long been a target for poachers, who kill the creature for its ivory tusks. The elephant is a highly intelligent animal, and its grazing behavior plays a significant role in maintaining the health of its ecosystem.

RhiNoCERoS Like the elephant, the rhinoceros is often hunted illegally, as its horn is a prized ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. There are two subspecies of rhinos: the more common white rhino and the endangered black rhino, which is actually gray or brown.

CAPE buFFALo Though lacking the lion’s fearsome reputation, the Cape buffalo is actually the most dangerous of the “big Five” to humans. These large grazers occupy a wide range of habitats, from low-lying grasslands to mountain slopes.

LEoPARD With its speed, stealth and expert climbing ability, the leopard is perhaps the most formidable predator in Africa. Leopards frequently hunt at night and remain hidden in trees during the day, making them the most elusive of the “big Five.”

Birding enthusiasts are rewarded, too, with over 300 species — including the martial eagle, Somali ostrich and vulturine guinea fowl — calling the reserve home. Samburu Simba Lodge | Meals: B L DDAY 5: Samburu/Masai Mara Game Reserve Awaken to sounds of the unspoiled wilderness. After breakfast, board a flight across the Great Rift Valley to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, host to a spectacular, ever-changing array of wildlife. Running along the Tanzanian border, the Masai Mara forms Kenya’s northern extension of the Greater Serengeti ecosystem; when the annual migration takes place, more than a million wildebeests march north with zebras and gazelles to graze on the Mara’s lush grasses. Game follows ancient migration routes under the watchful eyes of lions, leopards and cheetahs that lie in wait of vulnerable prey. The Mara’s 583 square miles of savanna, woodlands and tree-fringed rivers create an ecosystem that supports countless bird and mammal species. At the western reaches of the park is the Siria Escarpment, adjacent to acacia-dotted plains. Game

DAY 1: Arrive Nairobi, Kenya Arrive in Nairobi, where an Abercrombie & Kent representative meets and transfers you to your hotel. Probably Kenya’s most renowned hotel — and certainly its oldest — Fairmont The Norfolk has been drawing the rich and famous to its hallowed doors since it first opened on Christmas Day in 1904. In many respects, Nairobi grew up around the hotel, which occupies a central but quiet location opposite the National Theater. The comfortable rooms circle a large inner garden laden with flowering shrubs and heavy with birdsong. Its inviting restaurants offer delectable dining in elegant surroundings, while the front terrace is a popular location for watching modern Nairobi go by. Fairmont The NorfolkDAY 2: Nairobi/Amboseli National Park Fly to Amboseli National Park, fringed by Maasai villages and located in the Great Rift Valley province. The 150-square-mile reserve is renowned for its breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Begin your safari adventure in search of big game — elephants, in particular — while absorbing views of Africa’s highest peak amid acacia woodland, freshwater swamps, scrub brush and open plains. Return from your game drive as the sun sinks beneath the horizon. Tortilis Camp | Meals: B L DDAY 3: Amboseli National Park Rise for your morning game drive, followed by a visit to Dr. Cynthia Moss’ longstanding, in-depth Amboseli Elephant Research Project to learn about elephant family structure, life cycle and behavior. Look for lions and cheetahs on an afternoon game drive. This is an ideal time of day to see predators as they amble out of the shade and roam onto the plains in search of prey. From prehistoric Observation Hill, which overlooks Mount Kilimanjaro and the elephant-filled grasslands, watch as the spectrum of colors shifts at sunset. Tortilis Camp | Meals: B L DDAY 4: Amboseli/Nairobi/Laikipia Plateau Board a flight to the Laikipia Plateau, at the foothills of Mount

Kenya. Then, drive to your luxurious tented camp in the scenic Northern Frontier District, where snow-capped peaks dominate the view to the south. Take to the bush this afternoon, keeping your eyes peeled for glimpses of unique, indigenous northern species, such as reticulated giraffe and the long-necked gerenuk. All the big cats can also be found here, including leopards and lions. After dinner, sleep safe and warm in superbly appointed tents, serenaded by the sounds of the African night. This journey offers the chance to spot Africa’s iconic species — including the great hunting cats — as well as some of its most unusual game, such as reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra.

DAYS 7-8: Masai Mara Game Reserve Spend the next two days exploring the vast plains by safari vehicle. Running along the Tanzanian border, the Masai Mara forms an essential part of the Serengeti ecosystem, the very place where the annual wildebeest migration occurs. Rich in game, no landscape is more quintessentially “African” than these rolling grasslands and acacia savannas. The action never seems to stop here, and the chain of command begins with the Mara’s lion population, the largest in the country. You may also search for zebras, spotted hyenas, black-backed jackals, hippos, giraffes, eland and wildebeests. On your final evening, join fellow guests for a farewell dinner. Be on the lookout for the myriad species to be found here, ranging from giraffes, waterbucks, wildebeests and zebras to elands, fringe-eared oryx, greater kudu and the elusive wild dog, a prized sighting for any safari-goer. The Tarangire River runs through the center of the park, providing the thirsty animals with a year-round supply of water. Tarangire Sopa Lodge | Meals: B L D DAY 4: Tarangire/Lake Manyara National Park/ Ngorongoro Crater Travel overland to the small but wildlife-rich Lake Manyara National Park — home to grasslands, forests, marshlands, scrub and parklands punctuated with acacia trees. If you have time, you may wish to walk around the lovely grounds to see the gardens and the nearby waterfall. Continue to the 2,000-foot-deep Ngorongoro Crater, which is among the natural wonders of the world. The caldera, created by the collapsed cone of a volcano, contains a hidden world of wildlife. Even the rare and elusive black rhinoceros, one of Africa’s most endangered species, is a resident here. After a picnic lunch, visit a Maasai village and gain cultural insight into the lifestyle of these nomadic cattle herders when you meet with a village elder. The Maasai have peacefully coexisted with wildlife here since the 17th century. Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge | Meals: B L D

DAY 1: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania Following an overnight flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, transfer to your lodge. Serena Mountain Village DAY 2: Arusha In anticipation of the climb ahead, acclimatize as you walk through Arusha National Park. Situated between the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru, this beautiful park houses a wide range of habitats, from the string of crater lakes where you can watch water birds to the highland montane forest and imposing summit of Mount Meru. The forest itself contains a wealth of wildlife, including beautiful bushbucks — sometimes glimpsed in the glades between the ancient cedar trees — and black-and-white colobus monkeys. This evening, meet fellow climbers during a welcome dinner. Serena Mountain Village | Meals: B L D

“When the peak of Kilimanjaro and the glaciers are lit by the full moon, the view is stunning — and it is also safer to climb with a brightly lit path. That is why we time all of our ascents to occur under a full moon.”

— hein Prinsloo, A&K Tanzania

DAY 3: Arusha/Mount Kilimanjaro After breakfast, you are driven from Arusha to the Machame village on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to begin your climb. Hike for about six hours through dense rubber tree and giant fig forests to your camp, set up near huts once used for shelter on the mountain. As you make your way up through the forested terrain, look for signs of elephants. Your first camp is set at an altitude of 10,000 feet. Machame Camp | Meals: B L D DAY 4: Mount Kilimanjaro After rising early to a hot cup of coffee or tea, leave camp and absorb the commanding view of Uhuru Peak. Trek out of the forest up

to the Hagenia zone through a savanna of tall grasses and ghostly landscapes of volcanic lava; arrive, after a six-hour hike, at the Shira Plateau and your camp. At 12,500 feet, it boasts sweeping views across the Masai Steppe to distant Mount Meru and the Shira Needles. Shira Camp | Meals: B L DDAY 5: Mount Kilimanjaro During a six-hour hike, skirt the Shira Plateau toward the Kibo Massif and upward to the pass at Lava Tower (15,000 feet). Descend toward Barranco Camp through the immense Grand Barranco canyon that is punctuated by small waterfalls and fed by streams from the Umbwe River. Camp lies at an elevation of 13,000 feet. Barranco Camp | Meals: B L DDAY 6: Mount Kilimanjaro Hike for about four hours along the Barranco Cliff with no increase in elevation, allowing you time to rest and adjust to the increasingly higher altitudes. In the afternoon, you may hike in the Karanga Valley, where giant senecio and lobelia grow. Karanga Camp | Meals: B L D DAY 7: Mount Kilimanjaro Take another short, four- to five-hour trek and a day of acclimatization as you near the mountain’s peak, stopping at Barafu Camp (15,200 feet) on a moraine with views of majestic Mawenzi Peak to the right and Kibo Peak overhead. The surrounding alpine desert terrain is largely mineral, with some lichens and moss. Turn in early this evening, as tomorrow’s is a longer, more arduous climb. Barafu Camp | Meals: B L D

Priced from $5,595

Limited to 24 guests; arrives on Tuesday, departs on Tuesday

› Embark on a family treasure hunt through a famous market in the Ngorongoro highlands

› visit with an elder at a Maasai village to learn about the traditional ways of these nomadic people

DAY 1: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania Arrive by overnight flight to Tanzania, where your unforgettable wildlife adventure unfolds. On your adventure, you can view animals up-close from inside an extinct volcano and meet a long-standing local tribe to learn about their traditions and culture. Serena Mountain Village DAY 2: Arusha/Tarangire National Park Travel by road to Tarangire National Park, made up of eight distinct vegetation zones varying from swamps to open grasslands and acacia parkland. The variety of landscapes allows many animal and bird species to thrive. The park has an exceptional elephant population and the highest recorded number of breeding bird species for any habitat in the world. Settle in to your lodge, and then set out on an afternoon game drive. This evening, Abercrombie & Kent hosts a welcome dinner. Tarangire Sopa Lodge | Meals: B L DDAY 3: Tarangire National Park Morning and afternoon game drives take you through the landscapes of Tarangire, which change from baobab tree forests and swamps to flat plains dotted with distinctive, thorny acacia trees. The most outstanding feature in the park is the Tarangire River. It is the only reliable dry-season source of water available to wildlife in a vast stretch of Tanzania’s Rift Valley, attracting tremendous concentrations of animals. Look for unique species including eland, fringe-eared oryx, greater kudu and the elusive wild dog. Tarangire is also home to giraffes, waterbucks, wildebeest and zebras. Tarangire Sopa Lodge | Meals: B L D

“Amazing family safari. We will not forget the special moments created on our trip. it was a trip of a lifetime and exceeded our expectations.”

— R.F., Charlotte, NC

DAY 4: Tarangire/Ngorongoro Crater Leave Tarangire and travel overland to the Ngorongoro Crater, stopping at Mto wa Mbu, home to over 90 tribes. Wander through

Mto wa Mbu Market — the setting for a scavenger hunt. With your money and a list of items, roam the stalls and bargain for the goods on your list. Continue to Gibb’s Farm, where you sit down to a farm-fresh lunch, with fruit and vegetables from the farm’s organic garden. To work off your lunch, you may want to walk to a nearby waterfall that weaves in and out of the forest; see caves made by elephants; or just take a stroll in the farm’s beautiful gardens. From there, go on to the Ngorongoro Crater. Considered among the natural wonders of the world, the 2,000-foot-deep caldera is the result of a collapsed volcanic eruption and is a haven for many species of animals and birds. Arrive at your lodge, perched on the crater’s rim, offering spectacular views across this natural amphitheater. Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge | Meals: B L D DAY 5: Ngorongoro Crater Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, searching for lions, elephants, hyenas, wildebeests and gazelles. Even the rare and elusive black rhinoceros, one of Africa’s most endangered species, is a resident here. (One species you won’t see is the cheetah — the crater’s hyenas chased them out long ago.) Bird lovers can view flamingos and other species that share the shallow waters with big game. You may also see Maasai herdsmen walking with their cattle — the crater is in their territory, and the Maasai continue to coexist with wildlife as they have for centuries. Learn more of the Maasai’s ways by visiting a local village. Notice how the Maasai women do all of the work — even build the houses. Stop for a picnic lunch near the hippo pool and watch resident hippos lazing in the river. Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge | Meals: B L D

Arrive at your Maasai-style lodge, where the comfortable guest rooms overlook the Serengeti plains. This afternoon, set off on your first game drive in the park. Famed throughout Africa and around the world, its 10,000 square miles support a variety of animals, including lions, leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, giraffes and topi. Each year, the Serengeti is the scene of the spectacular seasonal wildebeest and zebra migration, when millions of these animals trek through to Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of fresh grass and water. The sight of so many animals, from the air or on the ground, is an awe-inspiring experience. Serengeti Sopa Lodge | Meals: B L D DAY 7: Serengeti National ParkEmbark on an optional hot air balloon ride over the boundless Serengeti plains, just as animals begin to stir. Watch below as graceful giraffes lope along, seemingly in slow motion, or see if you can locate elephant families rolling in the mud of a watering hole. The Serengeti’s diverse terrain supports an equally wide array of flora and fauna, which you see firsthand during today’s game drives. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth, where climate, vegetation and fauna have barely changed in the past million years. This evening, all travelling families gather for a farewell dinner — it’s the perfect time to swap stories about memorable sightings and toast a never-to-be-forgotten stay. Serengeti Sopa Lodge | Meals: B L DDAY 8: Serengeti/Arusha/Depart Fly back to Arusha, where you may relax in your dayroom before your international flight.
