From the President By Ted Anderson, President
In this communication I would like to touch
on three points; the first being the High Museum
exhibit of Dream Cars. A small group of 12 had
lunch at Cloud 80 restaurant and then made their
way through the exhibit. I’m sorry that Rita and
I missed this event but couldn’t attend due to the
unexpected passing of Rita’s sister. Thanks to
our program Director Rick Duff, a good time
was had by all.
Second is the July Monthly meeting was held
at McCormick’s and Schmick’s in Dunwoody.
The reason for the change was many of our
members had expressed their need for a change
in venue. The meeting was well attended by 40
based on my head count. The prices for food and
beverages were more than Aldos, but it was
refreshing to order off a different menu. The
next meeting on August 25th will again be at
McCormick’s and Schmick’s based on popular
opinion. The September meeting will be back at
Aldos unless we have reason to meet elsewhere.
Third and last I want is to save the date of
September 6th for the Atlanta British Car Fayre
in Norcross. To learn more about this event, go
to the web site at:
www.altantabritishcarfayre.com. The proceeds
of this event go to a charity. You will learn
about this at the August dinner meeting.
On a more personal note, Rita and I want to
express our gratitude to the many club members
who sent cards, and/or attended the visitation and
funeral of Rita’s sister Carol O’Brien. We have
developed many strong friendships with fellow
club members. All of you have been a blessing.
Please don’t forget that your annual
dues are due now! Please see
attached form.
Next monthly meeting August 25th

, The Jaguar XE
Will be Unveiled at a Secret
Location in London
XE is the name of the noble gas xenon, the
name of a popular currency conversion site, and
for a while, the name of the infamous Blackwater
paramilitary company. For all intents and
purposes, though, it is the name of that small
Jaguar sedan we've been waiting since the F-
Type became old news. We see the front end,
unwrapped, in "S" specification.
We've seen the rest before, showing off its
unique aluminum-intensive chassis. Surprise,
surprise: The front matches pretty nicely. If it
looks like a squarer XF, that would be
intentional. But beyond that, the XE will carry
forth Jaguar's new line of 2.0-liter turbo fours,
the default engine layout of the continent these
days: Only Jaguar will name its turbo four
"Ingenium”. Jaguar claims that the gasoline and
diesel engines, which will be versatile enough
for transverse or longitudinal positioning,
depending on AWD or RWD will not only return
great mileage but also propel the car to 186 mph.
Jaguar is also launching the XE on
September 8th, weeks before its rumored debut at
the Paris Motor Show. It will host a feel good
interactive audio-visual spectacle in London
designed to show off how painstakingly British
Jaguar is, a trait it recently reasserted: The whole
thing is called FEEL XE.
It will involve noted Britishers Emeli Sandé,
designer; Stella McCartney and Idris Elba of
"The Wire" fame. JAGUAR XE TEASE

MEMBERS All you need to know and more!
By Sheila Brower, Health & Hospitality Director
-Joel and Maryanne Blackford went on a
mission trip with their church to Rattlesnake
Ridge, Kentucky, and according to Maryanne, it
is the third poorest area in our country. They
went there to repair and add on to homes in the
area where there are virtually no jobs. After
their trip, they kayaked for 5-days at Ft.
Mountain State Park in Georgia. Thanks to you
both for the mission trip, bless you both!
-John Nichols went to Augusta for boat drag
races and had to miss our pool party…he had
hoped to attend but the boat races were delayed
due to the rain and couldn’t get back in time.
For those of you who missed his excellent talk
on Monday night, he did a great job discussing
his love for “going fast” in boats and cars. He
has passed this passion on to his sons, too!
-Paul and I had to miss the June meeting as
we were in Little Rock, since this was our
opportunity to go and visit family. We remain
busy with our commitments to real estate and our
schedules are pretty full! (This is a good
thing….I know some of you are thinking “keeps
them out of trouble!”)
-Chuck and Carolyn Frangiamore attended
our meeting at McCormick and Schmick’s and
said “they would meet with us as long as we
meet there.” It was good seeing them.
-Don and Marlene Hart both looked great.
Don said he is “all healed” and we are glad their
life is back to some degree of normalcy!
-June Mindrup had a birthday on July 31st so
we wished her a Happy Birthday! June is a lady
who is not getting older…just getting better.
-Sidney Gleaton – I refer to him as our
“traveling man.” This time he has returned from
travels to Nassau, Charleston, Orlando, Miami
and Panama...all fun places. Next month he will
be traveling to Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach; in
September, he is off to Las Vegas and in
October, Amelia Island. After that he plans to
stay home for a while. At the meeting, Sydney
mentioned the golf tournament on Monday,
October 6th at the St. Marlo Country Club in
Duluth. The tournament is to raise funds to
support the ongoing effort of the Alpha Atlanta
Education Foundation to provide scholarships to
deserving students. Over the last five years the
foundation has provided over $80,000 in
scholarships. You can go to the website to
register online at www.alphaatlantagolf.com.
Sidney is a co-chair for this event.
-Rick Duff recently went to Cincinnati,
Columbus and Youngstown, Ohio to see friends
he hasn’t seen in 30 years.
-Judy Scarborough said the pool party was a
“great success!” For those who missed, it was
great fun and great food! I believe it is the first
pool party where we didn’t have rain, but we all
have always had fun… rain or shine! Thanks
Judy for being the perfect host!
-Wayne Harris finished in FIRST PLACE in
the men’s singles 55/65c at the 2014 Georgia
Games Racquetball Tournament held on July
12th
. Congratulations Wayne!
-Larry and Deb Walton were both at our
meeting and Deb started school today as the
teachers have to start a week earlier than the
students who started August 4th
!….seems too
early to start as “back in our day” you didn’t start
until after Labor Day, right?
-J. P. and Jenny Summers recently returned
from a trip. As J.P. put it, “my bride and I just
returned from a trip to Newport, Rhode Island,
and Boston.” They had a great time.
-Dick and Johnnie Preston, whom we haven’t
seen in a while, were with us. They recently got
their son and family off to Germany. Their son
is in the military in Afghanistan. They plan to
go and visit them in December to celebrate
Christmas with them. Prayers! We understand,
too, that plans are being made to have a
gathering at their place on the lake, so look for
information on when, etc.
-John and Carol Almeter went to
Jacksonville, FL, the week of August 4 to attend
his 50th
High School reunion in St. Augustine.
-Vinnie Lauria only said “no news is good
news I always say!” It was good to see him at
the meeting and to see him and his wife, Marsha
at the pool party.
-Lew George just returned from visiting his
mother in Huntsville, AL. Lew’s mother moved
to Huntsville near his sister, which is good news.
She gave Lew her Mercury Monterey van so he
now has 3 cars again!! During the meeting, I
heard someone saying “Sheila, Sheila”…. Lew
was trying to get my attention to tell me he was a
new great uncle, again…he received the news of
the arrival during the meeting and had to brag!
The baby is named Johnny Ray Pearman and
weighed in just over 7 lbs. Unfortunately a few
weeks ago his mother fell and seriously injured
her head and knee. Fortunately this 90 year old
woman is a great fighter and is amazing the
doctors by here determined recovery and is doing
very well now!
-Vail and Linda Frost were at the meeting,
and her birthday was Sunday, July 27th…belated
Happy Birthday Linda!
-Ed Chellino sent me an email with
information regarding Jaguar: Jaguar buys
world’s largest collection of British cars.
Estimated price was $170M for 543 cars, which
includes 130 Jags. The collection is to be housed
at Browns Lane, Coventry. The Jags will be
used to promote the Mark and Heritage of
Jaguars.
-Joel and Maryanne Blackford are going to
Lake Keowee in So. Carolina for two weeks of
“camping, kayaking and sleeping.” They are
also going to show at the British Car Show with
their 1954 XK 120, which now is a real show
stopper….literally. Joel just finished installing
disc brakes on the front of his prize, and reports
that it stops quickly and in a straight line.
-John Nichols went to the Walter Mitty
Challenge and said Jaguar “kicked b____!”
Good to know.
THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS:
-Ted and Rita Anderson – Rita told me
Monday that her sister was in Hospice Critical
Care. Since that time, we have all learned that
her beloved sister, Carol O'Brien, passed away
Wednesday, July 30, 12:30. Her services were
Wednesday, August 6th, at St. Ann's Catholic
Church in East Marietta followed by a reception
in the Church hall.
-I mentioned Dick and Johnnie Preston’s son,
who is in Afghanistan. As you remember him,
please continue to pray for our troops and their
families as they serve everywhere. Continue to
always thank them for their service.
-Skip and Wanda Smith’s son, Brandon, just
expanded to 20,000 square feet and is now the
largest restoration, storage and service facility in
the Southeast!!! Go and visit him!
-Kim Daly--please continue to remember her.
Fran sent a contribution to the Tisch Brain
Tumor Center at Duke on behalf of the club.
Thanks Fran!
Let me know of any news you might
have…Bless you all!

Jaguar buys the largest British car collection in the world
By: Lew George
27 years ago, James Hull started his dentistry
business in a small town in Wales. Today his
dental empire reigns across 50 locations across
Great Britain, tweaking the teeth of self-
conscious Britons to the tune of nearly $11.8
million year and a business value of nearly $152
million. Mr. Hull, cricketer, cancer survivor, and
self-confessed workaholic, spent this fortune
quietly amassing one of the UK's largest car
collections: a whopping 543 cars, in a warehouse
in Hertfordshire, north of London.
There's the wood-paneled Mini Traveller
owned by Lord Mountbatten. There's a ruby red
1966 Jaguar 420G built for Sir William Lyons
himself, used to chauffeur the great man to the
Coventry office. There are cars owned by Mike
Hailwood, Winston Churchill, Sir Elton John.
Churchill drove a humble Austin; Sir John, a
humble Bentley. There's the Morris Minor
Series II convertible which was Hull's first car,
purchased 35 years ago. Then, a Jaguar Mark II
3.8 -- once, one of the fastest cars on the road,
"catnip to British car collectors," according to
Hagerty. There are Mille Miglia winners. Does
any man need five Citroën DSs? Hull does.
Hull hoards like a man who truly knows what
he's doing. He claims to have sold just five cars
in his 35 years of collecting.
This wasn't just an assemblage of cars,
stacked together in a warehouse but, this was a
man's life work, painstakingly curated to the tune
of $170 million. That's how much the collection
was worth when Hull put it up for sale. He could
think of no more fitting a custodian than Jaguar
Land Rover, which, emboldened by record
profits, has bought the whole thing for an
undisclosed sum.
Hull's collection is a fitting expansion for the
newly emboldened Jaguar Special Operations,
which will oversee the collection. 130 of the 543
cars are Jaguars. There are C-Types, D-Types,
XK120s, SS100s. There are thirty Mark saloons
and twenty XJs. There are E-Types of every
generation and configuration. There's an XKSS,
though not McQueen's. There's a Lynx Eventer,
which should belong in Ian Callum's garage.
The oldest Jaguar he has is a 1922 Swallow
Sidecar; the newest, an XKR-S.
Video Information
The collection suffered a setback in 2006
when a group of vandals broke into the
warehouse and vandalized some 60 cars,
hotwiring them before crashing them into each
other. Evidently, the collection has since
bounced back enough to garner Jaguar's interest.
The Special Operations division will move the
collection to its historic Browns Lane home in
Coventry, approximately 70 miles northwest of
Hertfordshire. Jaguar plans to leave the
collection intact; it won't divest itself of any of
the vestigial brands of the once-noble British
automobile industry. No doubt Jaguar will begin
trucking its historic models to press events and
unveilings across the world to dazzle the
journalists who might view the upcoming XE
this September.
The Hull collection also includes 365 pedal
cars, 300 examples of war memorabilia, and one
mini Avro Lancaster hanging from the ceiling.
Jaguar, Land Rover had three Pebble
Beach debuts!
Jaguar, Land Rover had three Pebble Beach
debuts August 4, 2014. Jaguar will build six
examples of the Lightweight E-Type. Jaguar
Range Rover SVR, Project 7 and Lightweight E-
Type to bow in Monterey.
Jaguar and Land Rover will reveal three
special-edition vehicles at Pebble Beach this
weekend: a 550-hp Range Rover Sport SVR, the
U.S. version of the Jaguar F-Type Project 7, and
the prototype of the new Jaguar Lightweight E-
Type. The trio, all from Jag’s Special
Operations division, bowed on Thursday night at
the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Kick-Off
party at the Tennis Club.
The Range Rover Sport SVR has been
spotted testing at Germany’s Nurburgring lately,
with its parent company claiming a lap time of 8
minutes, 14 seconds, reportedly the fastest Ring
time yet for an SUV. The SVR is powered by
the same 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that
motivates the F-Type R. Being a Range Rover,
the SVR comes with a twin-speed transfer case
and a 33.5-inch wading depth. It’ll hit
dealerships in 2015.
The Project 7, which we most recently saw at
the Goodwood Festival of Speed, is a version of
the F-Type that pays homage to the 60-year-old,
Le Mans-winning Jaguar D-Type. It sports a
567-hp V8 leading to a 0-60 mph time of 3.8
seconds and a top speed of 186 mph. Jaguar
says it will only build 250 examples of the
Project 7, deliveries of which will begin in mid-
2015. Finally, Jaguar will build six Lightweight
E-Types to fill in the missing production
numbers from the 1960s. Eighteen were
scheduled to be built, yet only 12 were
completed. The new cars will be powered by a
300-hp 3.8-liter inline six.

Dream Cars at the High By: Rick Duff, Activities Director
Rick Duff reporting here from the High trip
in Midtown. We met for lunch at Table 1280
right at the concourse, housing the High and the
menu was imaginative and interesting. The food
was good and the bar looked like a good place
for the late crowd. The open window
environment lent itself to easy view of the open
space and activity outside the High.
We had a great time at the High Museum. 12
AJS members came for lunch, the camaraderie
and to see the truly very fine car exhibit. We
have all seen cars that look like forms of space or
aeronautical triumphs combined with the auto
industry. But this exhibit had something
different. A van looking very much like the VW
Van but better, more sleek
and a very
creative hatch in
the back.
Chairs behind
the driver faced
each other and
many extras were included. BTW, the paint on
these cars was fantastic. Go to Google and see
the cars that were displayed. Marsha and
Rebecca both found their dream car. Don and
Marlene showed up for lunch to support the club
but had already seen the show. In addition,
Maryanne and Joel, Paul and Shelia, Ray and
Lew, Marsha and Vinnie and Rebecca and I all
showed up. I am glad to see everyone enjoyed
themselves and hope the next event is as good as
this turned out.
