    Welcome from the President

I am delighted to welcome you to the conferring ceremonies at Athlone Institute of Technology for 2011.

Today is a marker in terms of your academic and professional development, when your hard work and dedication is formally recognised. It is also an opportunity for recognising the wider circle of people who have contributed to this success, including your families and the academic and support community here at AIT.

There is no denying that we are living in a time of great uncertainty, however, I am confident that your time at AIT has prepared you well to grasp

the opportunities that lie ahead. Higher education has given you the knowledge and skills to join the workplace, but above all, it has given you the flexibility and versatility to forge your own destiny.

Over four decades, AIT students and graduates have distinguished themselves and the institute through the quality of their work and their achievements, on and off campus. We are proud to have such worthy ambassadors. You are part of this community of AIT ambassadors, and I would urge you to become active members of our alumni association.

Finally, on behalf of the staff of AIT, I wish to congratulate all award recipients. For some conferees, graduation heralds departure from the institute; for others it represents a highly significant landmark en route to higher qualifications. I trust that you, the graduates who are leaving to pursue various careers, will retain happy memories of life in Athlone.

    Beir bua seize success!

    Professor Ciarn Cathin President

Welcome from the Academic RegistrarAthlone Institute of Technology warmly welcomes all the graduands and their guests to this series of ceremonies to celebrate the achievement of national awards. The institute operating under delegated authority from the Higher Education and Training Awards Council and in conjunction with the Further Education and Training Awards Council and other awarding bodies will confer awards on some 1,800 students over the course of two days. This is testimony to the application of the recipients and to the dedication of the many members of staff who join with you in recognising the achievements celebrated.

Along with colleagues, I look forward to guiding you through the course of the ceremonies. Athlone Institute of Technology acknowledges the generous support of our sponsors and especially those who have contributed special awards in recognition of our learners achievements. We thank them and acknowledge also the elegant contribution of the Band of the 4th Western Brigade under its new director of music, Captain Fergal Carroll.

As ever, I record my appreciation of our academic, administrative, and support staff and all concerned with the preparation and presentation of these ceremonies. With these colleagues, I wish all gathered here a most pleasant day. To our students, whether they elect for further study or proceed to a professional career, we offer best wishes for even further success.

Dr Joseph J. Ryan Academic Registrar
