Service learning is an educational activity where participants contribute their time and services to their community and make a positive impact on their neighborhood, their city, their country, or the world we share. Service learn-ing projects benefit both participants and beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries grow as we work together to renovate buildings, paint walls, build furniture, provide equipment, and restore structures. In turn, they inter-act and forge bonds with us as we teach and learn from each other.

Participants in the program at AISM such as students, parents, partners, and teachers learn about themselves, their status, and their role in building a bet-ter world, as well as become aware of the difficult circumstances in which others live.

Our aim is to cultivate a culture of service in our students, in our beneficiar-ies and in their communities. At AISM, we work in partnership with local and international organizations to expose our students to diverse realities and op-portunities. Although our main objective is educational, we also strive to build meaningful and sustainable partnerships and capacity for partner-organiza-tions. We hope you will join us on this Journey.

The partners mentioned in this brochure require a range of resources. We in-vite your company to collaborate with us and make a difference in our com-munity through these projects. We will ensure that your company benefits by displaying your logo in all publications and communications related to our Service Learning Program. Also, if you provide roll-up banners, we will place them in the AISM lobby for further visibility. Our students visit the various projects every month and assist with physical improvement, education and other activities needed. Your staff is invited to join us on these visits.

We have listed the needs identified by each project. You may be interested in providing the materials, services or only some items on the list. Any support will be very much appreciated!

Polana Caniço Community SchoolThis community school is part of the Mozambican education network and provides schooling for students in grades 1-5. As a community school, it does not receive any financial help from the government beyond training for teachers and administrators. Families of children who attend this school pay token fees (MT 200 a month), which is put toward employing teachers. Its governance is guided by a school council that con-sists of parents, school staff, community members and authorities.

Established in 1995 at the initiative of the neighboring community, this community school received land from the municipality and all authorizations from the Ministry of Culture. Currently, the school serves a total of 550 students in three shifts, including an adult education class, attended mostly by women. When AISM first connected with the school in 2010, the classrooms were built from caniço straw; there was no toilet, proper equipment or furniture. In two years of partnership, we built two classrooms and a communal toilet, in addition to providing training for teachers and interactions for the students.

Current Needs:• Build 3 more classrooms and an administration building, enabling the school to add classes beyond 5th grade – The building would be simple in construction, 7x4m, tin roof, with two windows. Architectural plans will be available in August 2012, kindly provided by an AISM parent.• Water connection – piping, elevated tank, pressure pump, and counter.• Energy connection and set up – pre-paid counter, wiring, and lighting.• Furniture for 5 classrooms – 5 blackboards, 5 pin boards, 5 clocks, 5 lockable metal bookshelves, and 100 two-seater desks. • 2 computers for the administration.

If you are interested in helping this school, please contact Mr Limaverde at AISM. Please send us your logo and we will recognize you as the official sponsor by including it on this page.

Rainha da Paz Community SchoolFounded in 1999, Rainha da Paz is another community school which receives scant government funding. The school is architecturally sound with three well-built classrooms and an administration block. The school serves a student body of 225 students from grades 1 to 7. Ten teachers, plus 5 non-teaching staff run the school. Thus far, AISM has improved the school’s space by paint-ing murals and constructing a tree swing. Activities focus on interaction be-tween students in classes (computer, English), sports and games, and training for the teachers. We also encouraged the building of toilets for which plans are ready and construction is authorized.

Current Needs: • Building toilets – 4x3m, two toilets with a sink. • Building two more classrooms to enable the school to provide secondary education – The building would be simple in construction, 7x4m, tin roof, with two windows. Architectural plans available in August/2012, kindly donated by an AISM parent.• Water connection – piping, elevated tank, pressure pump, and counter.• Painting of 4 classrooms (interior and exterior) – 50 liters of paint, 10 rollers, and 10 paintbrushes.• 5 computers for teachers and training.

Warethwa AssociationWarethwa Association is an initiative sponsored by Timbila Muzimba, a well-known Mozambican contemporary band. They have been working for years with teenagers from the neighborhood and were recently granted some land by the government to consolidate their intervention activities. Their activities seek to keep teens away from a life of risk and to build the self-esteem of un-derprivileged teenagers. The association forms amateur percussion bands that perform around Mozam-bique. Through a holistic approach, the participants learn to build their own instruments with recycled material and they teach each other how to play. The association helps enrich the lives of teens as it promotes Mozambican tradi-tional culture. AISM is providing our students with the opportunity to support these teenagers and their orchestras.

Current Needs: • Building of a cultural center in Jardim neighborhood – 10x8 meter gazebo made from local materials, rustic construction, and stage. • Material to build 50 local material drums. • Sponsoring a year’s worth salary for an art educator to be based at the as-sociation.

Gabriel Limaverde is passionate about the potential of grassroots community work to build a better world. For the past 15 years, he has been working with community-based and international organizations both in Brazil and Mozam-bique, leading and participating in social, educational and cultural activities. Gabriel holds a Masters degree in Applied Ethics, and believes in the concept of Ubuntu, in which we can define ourselves as people only through other people. In order to be all we can be, we need all other community members to be all they can be.

AISM – history, values and vision: The American International School of Mo-zambique’s provides a learning environment that inspires students to culti-vate their unique talents and perspectives, preparing them to contribute in purposeful ways to the world that they will inherit and shape. Our students enjoy a stimulating and balanced educational program that is rooted in the principles of excellence, ethics and engagement. Strengthening the connec-tions to Mozambique through our curriculum, engaging our students in age-appropriate, action-oriented projects, raising our students’ awareness of sig-nificant social issues and problems, and involving community members and community-based organizations in our Service Learning program is a priority for the AISM community.
