INTRO

We call stainless steel to a group of corrosion resistant steels containing elements such as chromium, nickel, molybde-num and titanium.Chromium, the main element responsible to increase corrosion resistance, when in contact with atmospheric oxygen, forms a lm over the steel surface, protecting it from corrosive environmental attacks. Even when the steel suers from some type of damage, the oxygen from the air immediately combines with the chromium to once again form the protective lm. The rst studies appeared in 1912 in England and Germany, since then, we have seen the rise of successive alloys. England contributed with Fe-Cr alloy, approximately 13% of Cr, presented in nowadays as AISI 420 (martensitic structu-re) and Germany, with the same alloy also containing Ni, quite similar to AISI 302 (austenitic microstructure).

The two most commonly used stainless steels are the 201 and 304 AISI. Each type of steel has its own unique composi-tion, which is why you’ll nd diferences in strengths, weaknesses and appearances. These unique compositions allow the industry to make certain types of stainless steel ideally for certain projects. Part of the austenitic group, stainless steel 201, is made from nickel, chromium and manganese. It is an alloy which uses less nickel than the 304 but is compensated with manganese. This makes it stronger however and on the downside, during production, it becomes more dicult to mold and weld. In comparison to the 304, the 201 is less corrosion resistant and is mostly used in less oxidizing environments.

The most versatile and widely used of all stainless steels. It has less carbon to minimize the carbides precipitation and it is used for a wide range of high temperature applications.Austenitic stainless steel chrome-nickel non-magnetic, has good weldability, high toughness and excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of environments.

Austenitic stainless steel Chrome-Nickel, with similar properties to the 304 alloy, benets in being more resistant to the harshest environments. It has minimum chromium content of 16%, 10% nickel and 2% of molybdenum. The molybdenum provides an additio-nal corrosion resistance making it useful in chemically hostile conditions. It is useful for higher corrosion environments and temperatures below zero.
