Bought for a 'song' in my eyes (£2.90 plus postage). Will try to do a restoration build in the same vane as the SAM 2 Missile as this kit appears to be little made too! It will be built as Rommel's transport including all the figures which will be a first for me. First off the box and sprue shots as always, as you can see the interior is completely made complete with figure which has been well and truely stuck in. Hopefully not too much of him will show once it's completed. Has had a patchy coat of green applied, , can't think why green was used unless it was the only colour available! PDFmyURL.com

Corricon Airf ix 1/35 Scale Romme l's Sd Kfz 250/3 Half t rack

Yet another Ebay aquisition in a started state. Bought fo r a 'song' in my eyes (£2.90 plus postage). Will try to do a restoration build in the same vane as theSAM 2 Missile as this kit appears to be little made too! It will be built as Rommel's transport including all the figures which will be a first fo r me.

First o ff the box and sprue shots as always, as you can see the interio r is completely made complete with figure which has been well and truely stuck in.

Hopefully not too much o f him will show once it's completed. Has had a patchy coat o f green applied, , can't think why green was used unless it was theonly co lour available!

Have now given the interio r a coat o f grey which I think is more in keeping with what it should be. Once its given a 'wash' and some dry brushing it shouldn'tlook too bad as most o f it will be hidden.

More to fo llow between finishing o ff the Matador, Bren Carrier and Jeep

Ratch I shall fo llow with interest

Corricon It's been a while but have now made a little progress, had a go at dry brushing the interio r and initial painting o f the figure in the driving seat (this figure is

unlikely to be seen once the build is complete so if I achieve a passible representation I'll be happy). Have started to add some bits to the top cowling tooand have also given the o ther figures some flesh co louring. Pictures below:

fe anor Ayup Corricon...

Was there no chance o f prising the figure out after removing the Steering wheel and o ther bits? PDFmyURL.com

Corricon Feanor,

No chance it was stuck well fast, not even sure what glue had been used but there was certainly lo ts o f it!! After do ing some dry assembly the figure will onlyjust be visible so shouldn't detract too much from the vehicle.

Corricon Well getting back to this one again! Have now finished adding the parts to the sides o f the cabin and have cemented the sides to the cabin floor. This has now been taped up to try and align allthe parts as the bottom looked as though it had been twisted. It is now aside to dry thoroughly hopefully some pictures tomorrow!

Corricon Pictures as promised this was left overnight before removing the sello tape as I was trying to correct the twist in the base. Almost did it but you can still see aslight twist in picture 3. I'm hoping when the cover goes on it will help to align it.

B4 e n That is a nasty warp corricon - is it too late to give it the hot water treatment?

Nice work on the restoration.

Corricon Finally got back to this. Have now finished o ff the interio r by adding the small parts that were missing and have now fitted the top to the body. After carefullyglueing the top starting from the front and working gradually round leaving it to set overnight in between each glueing I think I've managed to get most o f the

glueing the top starting from the front and working gradually round leaving it to set overnight in between each glueing I think I've managed to get most o f thewarping out o f it. It now looks like this after 3 days worth o f waiting to dry:

So tonight a coat o f desert co loured paint is on the cards!

Sgt .Square he ad Jesus.....What ever did they paint it with? Some godawful GW (BooHiss! ) 'Namby-Wood-Elf-Tights' type co lour by the look o f it!

PDFmyURL.com

Page 13: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

I look forward to seeing it restored to a more appropriate appearance!

All the best Sgt.S

Corricon Looks like a flurescent green acrylic I think, anyway it's now had a coat o f a sandy yellow and looks more in keeping, pics to fo llow tomorrow! Hoping to progress this a bit quicker now, fingers crossed.

Corricon As promised (although a day late) pictures o f the first coat o f 'Desert' co lour:

More to fo llow in the coming week hopefully!

Epic Wow, you really have a lo t to do... I think the green is multiplying, what an awful co lour, looks like algae...

RatchBet you I finish mine first

Coming on good

Corricon Probably Ratch! I'm do ing too many o ther things at the mo, what with cinema with the kids, schoo l concerts, parties, visits from distant relatives, visiting distant relatives,co llecting the tree , putting up the decorations and preparing for the 'big man's' visit it's quite hectic in the household at present (not too much time for

building models )

Sgt .Square he ad Now, now boys.....It's not the finishing first that counts, it's the taking part!

Looking forward to seeing them both finished (and to getting one myself).

All the best Sgt.S

Corricon Got chance to get away for an hour or so and have managed to get the o ther set o f bogies on and the filler sanded. Also managed to get one track jo ined(needle and thread, I knew my scouting days would come in handy one day). Will just need to build in some 'sag' to the track. Pics below:

PDFmyURL.com

Page 24: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

Corricon More progress, had a day o ff work and the wife went shopping so had some time to myself. Now at the stage where I have 'Kleared' the areas where thedecals are go ing in preparation for the final push to add all the small parts prio r to final weathering and finishing. A few pics below:

PDFmyURL.com

Page 27: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

Still need to 'add' some sag to the tracks!

Ratch Looks like yours will be finished first

PDFmyURL.com

Page 28: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

How did you jo in the tracks and was this done prio r to or after fitting the roadwheels

Corricon Ratch,

Needle and thread! I looped the thread through the ho les at the ends o f the tracks a couple o f times and tied the ends together, if you're gentle when youknot them they kind o f embedd themselves in the track making it almost invisible, then I sealed the thread with a dab o f super glue. I then slipped the trackover the wheels and they didn't take a lo t o f stretching to fit them either, but as I said before they are a bit taught and I will need to 'build in' some sag! (thiswas an o lder kit so had the o lder more manageable tracks!)

Ratch Cheers, I might try sewing them when wrapped around the wheels

Corricon A bit more slow progress and probably all now till after Christmas, decalling now completed just needs sealing with another coat o f Klear (which might getdone this side o f xmas) which I won't show until after I do some more assembly. Pics below:

Getting there, soon be finished (I hope!)

fe anor Ayup Corricon...

That's one nice Halftrack Mate. Can't wait to see your Weathering Techniques on it ! PDFmyURL.com

Page 34: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

Ratch Nearly there

Bre ws Looking impressive.

B4 e n Looks good Corricon. I'd be sloshing muck all over it by now!

Be auf ighte r This cries out to be re-released, especially now the 1/32 figures are back on sale.

Corricon More progress tonight. Now have most o f the small parts removed from the sprues and where needed assembled ready for attaching to the halftrack. Nopictures thus far. Hope to attach these parts tomorrow in preparation for applying the base co lour to them. Then it's onto the interesting part, weathering thefinish down. Still have to work on the figures at this time and I think they will be the last bits to get done!

Corricon Pictures today. Fitted most o f the smaller parts now, just the headlights, machine guns and steps to fit (and the figures to finish o ff). Have given it a wash inblack and then black and burgundy acrylics. Further dry brushing with an acrylic lighter brown to fo llow along with a black!

PDFmyURL.com

Page 37: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

The last photo was taken with a flash and tends to bleach out the photo in my opinion!

It will also need a final matt spray too to rid any shiney areas that remain from when it was 'Kleared' fo r the decals!

PDFmyURL.com

Page 38: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

B4 e nLooking good Corricon. You're really pulling this together well.

A thin black wash and some light green and/or sand drybrushing would bring up the clo th stowage nicely.

Corricon Right more progress, really needs a spray o f matt varnish but thought I'd post up some (almost) finished pictures (I still need to get the figures donethough!

PDFmyURL.com

Page 45: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

B4 e n Very nice indeed!

Your weathering is working a treat.

Are you go ing to try to sag the tracks a bit? Difficult I know when they are a tight fit.

Corricon Yes will be trying to 'sag' them. The tracks don't seem to be that tight, and appear quite flexible. Will try 'super glue' at stategic po ints!

PDFmyURL.com

Page 46: Airfix Build -1-32-scale-rommel-s-sd-kfz-250-3-halftrack

Be auf ighte r This may be an artefact o f the flash photography, but what's the rationale for a black wash?

I'd associate this effect with dirty city rain. This desert vehicle in contrast exhibits grease spots, and what look like boot marks, along the left mudguard andon the glacis plate between the edge and the hatch. The driving light on the left, the rubber mudguard flaps and the upper surfaces generally appear dusty.

Likewise this one.

Just a thought.

B4 e n I don't know about Corricon but I find an overall very thin black wash useful fo r toning down the initial co lour and emphasising hatches, viewports etc.(Compare his recent shots with earlier pics to see what I mean). Later I might pick out some details with black pinwashes, but it's easy to overdo so I try tokeep that to a minimum. More o ften for desert stuff I'd use black with a little red mixed in to make a dark or even reddish brown. This is a handy basis fo r adding rust effects later. Drybrushing and/or crushed pastels can then be added over the washes to get highlights and dust effects to whatever degree you are after. I think in general the smaller the scale the more contrast you need to bring out details - assuming that is what you want. It is more obvious in real lifeviewing than in photos though.

Be auf ighte r Model photos can certainly be deceptive. I tend to paint figures with fairly subtle highlights which then almost vanish when photographed. I conclude that tomake them visible in a photo they'd need to be overdone.

Sgt .Square he ad How much is visible depends an awful lo t on the lighting.

Great work on a classic Airfix kit!

All the best Sgt.S

Corricon Sometime ago I know but I've finally got round to finishing the figures and 'sagging' the tracks. Pics below, I'm not really a figure painter though:
