1.3 Contents

1.3.1 Terms and Their Definitions

This module groups terms used in a specific meaning (a term means a word or an

expression). Terms to be included shall be either:

• specialized terms used within at least two sectors of activity or Functions,

• general terms used across several disciplines.

1.3.2 Validation

Terms and their definitions must have been validated by the sectors of activity

concerned before they are introduced. Validators shall be persons whose level of

knwoledge of the subject is high enough to have an overall view and ensure effective

application.

1.3.3 Definition Source

When there are several sources of definition for a term, the one that is selected must be:

• In compliance, when applicable, with the definitions provided in regulatory

texts and standards, eg:

• ISO standards (International Organization for Standardization)

• AECMA documents (The European Association of Aerospace Industries)

• FAR (Federal Aviation Regulations)

• JAR (Joint Aviation Requirements)

• …

• The one which best suits the needs of the company

• The most easily understandable one

• The most concise and simple

Note: Refer to Webster's Collegiate or Webster's International Dictionary for the

definitions of terms not found in this AP. Some definitions from Webster's (marked

with WD) are included for completeness.

Where the definitions of terms contained in this AP differ from those in Webster's

Dictionary, the meaning given here takes precedence.

1.3.4 Multiple Definitions for the Same Term

• There may be several definitions for the same term if it is used in different

contexts (the context shall then be specified).

1.3.5 Revision of Terms/Definitions

• To avoid providing terms the definition of which may no longer be applicable,

terms/definitions shall be reviewed at least every 2 years.

• If, in the course of time, a term becomes redundant either by going out of

general use or by being replaced by another term which reflects current

technology or usage, it will remain listed in AP2080 as a matter of record of

past use, but it will have a note added to indicate any future limitation of use or

substitution by a new term.

1.3.6 Introduction of New Terms

New terms will be introduced on request via the Reference Language Network members

to whom the terms will be submitted (see list of the members page 112).

2.1 AdministrationTerms and definitions are centralized in the Lexicon Data Base (Lotus Notes Application)

and are administered by designated person(s).

2.2 Data Base Outputs

2.2.1 Electronic Output

The Lexicon Data Base is used as a data source for output of the Lexinet consultable on

Airbus France Intranet and on Airbus|People Portal.

The Lexicon Data Base is used as a data source for producing hard copies.

Aircraft Version Re-allocation

Relates to the operation which consists in converting an aircraft from oneVersion to another during the production phase.

All Operator Telex An AOT is used to launch very urgent action which is required to be taken bythe Operators concerned due to an event/finding which has implication on theairworthiness of the affected Airbus aircraft or due to an event which hasserious operational impact. The action is to be performed within a few days ora few weeks from receipt of the AOT. For such cases, the AOT is the fastestpossible means of communication.

The content of an AOT may later be rendered mandatory by the AirworthinessAuthorities through a Consigne de Navigabilité (CN) or an AirworthinessDirective (AD), but even if this is not the case, the AOT is considered by Airbusto be a mandatory action.

The AOT is sent to the Engineering/Maintenance department of the Operatorsconcerned (ie: all operators having the same type of aircraft, or having thesame type of engine in the case of an AOT linked to power plant.

Flight above a cloud layer is permitted if the way to the destinationairport is clear of cloud. Ferry Flight A flight which is conducted to take the A/C after a technical problem to astation where repairs are made. ConstituentAssembly

A constituent assembly (CA) is a class of configuration item, in the sense ofISO 10007, reflecting the physical product assembly breakdown. The completeand tested aircraft is the overall CA. It is broken down into several levels ofCAs reflecting the various assembly processes, facilities and owners whichcontribute to the final product. Each assembly process owner is responsible forthe establishment and follow-up of its CA configuration up to aircraft delivery tothe customer.AI/QI list the applicable CAs for a given aircraft program and give instructionsto compile the CA delivery documents. The A/C inspection report is the top CAdelivery documents.

Constituents In Airbus projects an aircraft is considered to be made of:• functions (structure/systems),• techniques (to fulfill the functions).

By techniques is meant:• Materials,• Standard Items,• Non-Standard Items (eg: Equipment),• Processes.

These form the constituents (or parts) of an Airbus.

Dummy Parts Parts which are installed in lieu of aircraft parts, such as dummy Floor Panels,pending a definitive decision about the final aircraft configuration.

These have to be considered as Tooling but may be installed to allow theaircraft to be flown in some instances.

Equipment An item (often a Line Replaceable Unit, LRU), which is part of a system, andwhich includes Shop Replaceable Units (SRUs) or components and parts withhardware devices and possibly software elements (see ABD0100/0200).

Federal Supply Codefor Manufacturers

Floor Panels Floor Panels are an integrated part of the aircraft structure.

Quality The totality of characteristics of an entity that bears on its ability to satisfystated and implied needs.

Notes:1. In a contractual environment or in a regulated environment, such as the

nuclear safety field needs are specified, whereas in other environments,implied needs should be identified and defined.

2. In many instances, needs can change with time; this implies periodic reviewof requirements for quality.

3. Needs are usually into characteristics with specified criteria. Needs mayinclude for example, aspects of performance, usability, dependability,(availability, reliability, maintainability), safety, environment, economics andaesthetics.

4. The term "quality" should not be used as a single term to express a degreeof excellence in a comparative sense nor should it be used in a quantitativesense for technical evaluations. To express these meanings, a qualifyingadjective should be used. For example, use can be made of the followingterms:

a) "relative quality" where entities are ranked on a relative basis in the"degree of excellence" or "comparative sense" (not to be confusedwith grade);

The Airbus term for applying the concepts of Advisory Circular (FAA) AC 120-53 to related aircraft families (A319, A320, A321, A330, A340). CCQ isintended to permit the carry over of substantial credit for crews qualifying fromone aircraft to another, based on the common cockpit and flight characteristics.CCQ is applicable to transition between these types and to mixed fleet flying ofthese types.

Curriculum A qualification curriculum addresses the required training and qualificationactivities for a specific make, model, and series of aircraft and for a specificduty position.

Customization Embodiment of modifications in the instructional content as well as in thetraining media, to be consistent with the customer's Aircraft technicalconfiguration or operational policy.

Fixed Base Simulator An enclosed aircraft cockpit Flight Training Device used by Flight crews, andwhich reproduces aircraft systems so that flight training events or flightchecking events can be accomplished.

Flight TrainingDevice

A full scale replica of an aircraft instrument, equipment panel and control in anopen cockpit area or an enclosed aircraft cockpit. Four levels are defined in theAC 120-45A: levels 4, 5, 6, 7.

Levels 4 and 5 corresponds to the Cockpit System Simulator (CSS).

Maintenance TrainingSimulator

It is a Fixed Base Simulator (FBS) plus specific equipment and/or simulationfor maintenance training.

Mock-Up A full-size structural model built accurately to scale for study, testing or display.

Multi CrewCooperation

The functioning of the Flight Crew as a team of cooperating members led bythe Pilot in Command rather than a group of technically competent individuals.

On Job Training A set of maintenance training sessions composed of defined practicaloperations and procedures to be accomplished by trainees on in-serviceaircraft.

Part Task Trainer A computer-based system simulator used to teach a system by reproducingthe system itself and its associated peripherals. It can comprise a set of guidedexercises or can be used in free play.

Prerequisite Level Initial trainee level required, specified in the clause 16, to follow the trainingdelivered by Airbus.

Recurrent Training Training occurring periodically, following an initial training in order to maintain aqualification and/or a level of proficiency.

Refresher Course A course to recall previously studied material.

Remedial Session Any additional training sessions for helping the trainees to reach the specifiedlevel of proficiency.

Revision Service Through a yearly fee, the customer has access to a certain number of serviceswhich will provide him with the latest training standards as well as acontinuously updated courseware.

Route Menu defining the content of a Computer-Based Training (CBT) courseware.The modules of a courseware are accessed from this menu.

Session A period of training consistent with the method of study, learning or testing ofperformances.

Stand-up Lecture Course or part of a course conducted by an instructor, using transparencies,slides or projected Video and Computer-Based Instruction (VACBI).
