AIR POWER AND WARFARE: A SUPPLEMENT

INTRODUCTION

This highly selective bibliography supplements the original bibliographydeveloped in 1978 by Ms. Betsy C. Kysely, to support the Eighth Military HistorySymposium. While this bibliography focuses primarily on materials published since theearlier bibliography was developed, it does include some significant materials that werepublished prior to 1978, but that were omitted from that edition. Emphasis in thissupplement is on scholarly analysis of air power itself and scholarly depictions of itshistory. Like most editions of the United State Air Force Academy Directorate ofLibraries' publication, Special Bibliography Series, this compilation is limited to currentholdings of the Academic Library at the Academy. It includes books, reports, government documents, and journal articles. Excluded are pictorial works, newspaperarticles, works of fiction, studies of the technology of aircraft and associated weaponry, and items focused on the general history of aviation. Readers wanting information onthe history of aviation, certainly prior to the Wright Brothers, are encouraged to consultthe U. S. Air Force Academy Friends of the Library publication, The Genesis of Flight:The Aeronautical History Collection of Colonel Richard Gimbel.

, This bibliography, Number 99 in the Library's Special Bibliography Series, wascompiled by Mr. Elwood L. White, Military History Bibliographer and Reference Librarian, who also prepares a biennial bibliography to support the Aqademy's on-going MilitaryHistory Symposia. Questions or comments about this edition of the SpecialBibliography Series may be addressed to Mr. White at:

DEDICATION TOElizabeth "Betsy" Coxe Kysely

USAFA Reference Librarian, 1964 - 1988

This edition of the U.S. Air Force Academy Directorate of Libraries SpecialBibliography Series is dedicated to Betsy" Kysely, who served on the library stafffrom January 1964 until June 1988. It was Ms. Kysely who produced the firstedition of this bibliography in 1978.

She is remembered by her friends and colleagues as being dedicated, energetic, and loyal; a colleague willing to assume any task or project, and aperson who exemplified the Academy's core values of integrity first, servicebefore self, and excellence in all that she did.

In 1977 she was appointed Chief of the Reference Branch, a position sheheld until her retirement in 1988. Her services were exemplary. She establishedregular, but focused, reference staff meetings that enhanced communication andimproved reference services. She scheduled staff to cover the reference deskfor all the hours that the library was open-92 hours per week-but stillscheduled all staff to be together at work for at least six hours per week. As newtechnologies developed, she took a leadership role in making sure the librarywas making optimum use of these new efficient sources. Some of theseincluded utilization of the OCLC for both cataloging and interlibrary loans, theinitiation of the first on-line bibliographic database, and the installation of the firston-line integrated library system. During the library's 45,000 square footexpansion, she organized her staff to provide consistently superior service whilecollections were being moved and service desks were being relocated, not once, but several times as the construction progressed.

As an exemplary supervisor she undertook every task that she asked herstaff to do so that she understood what her subordinates would be required to doand how the library supported those tasks. She directed a total review by theSubject Bibliographers/Reference Librarians of the entire collection to eliminatesuperceded or obsolete materials while adding materials in areas of thecollection identified as being weak. This review saved thousands of dollars byeliminating materials that were of minimal use and avoiding the costs of enteringthem in the library's recently acquired on-line catalog. To the benefit of cadetsand faculty, she developed strong general library-orientation programs that wereplaced on videotapes to relieve staff of repetitious tasks.

Her devotion to duty, her caring for subordinates and colleagues, and herprofessional expertise still provide a model for librarians who served with her aswell as for those who serve at the Academy, but never worked here when shewas Chief of Reference Services. In the more recent past, Ms. Kysely continuesto serve as a volunteer in the Reference Branch that she so expertly developedand enhanced. For all that she did and continues to do for the Academy and forher superior leadership, we dedicate this "Air Power and Air Warfare BibliographySupplement" to her.
