Important Christmas Notice: As you are probably aware, Christmas falls on a Monday this year. I’ve been

asked whether attending the Vigil or Mass during the Night on Christmas

Eve also fulfills the Sunday obligation. The simple answer is No (There is a complicated answer). We should attend Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent (Vigil or Sunday Morning) and Mass for Christmas (Vigil, Mass during the Night, Masses on Christmas Morning). There’s no ‘two for one’ I’m afraid! For the Weekend of 23rd/24th December, Masses will be as normal: December 23rd at 5pm and December 24th at 8am, 10am and 12pm. Masses for Christmas will be: December 24th at 4pm, 7pm, 10pm and December

25th at 9am. --Fr. Michael Williams Fr. Michael Williams Fr. Michael Williams Fr. Michael Williams

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH ST. JOHNS, MICHIGAN

WE ARE ALL EVANGELIZERS Let ’s s tar t today o f f w i th a l i t t le game. What shal l we ca l l i t ? How about “Name That Tune?” (That sounds pret ty or ig inal doesn ’t i t? ) I ’ l l p lay a few notes on the p iano and you guess the name o f the song. Wai t , that won’t work . How about I g ive you a couple l ines f rom a song and you te l l me what i t i s? That makes more sense . “Everyone I know, everywhere I go People need some reason to bel ieve…” Let ’s look at the second l ine “people need some reason to bel i eve . ” We a l l need a purpose in l i fe , something that dr ives us . For us , that be l ie f s tar t s and ends in ete rnal l i fe ga ined through Jesus Chr i s t . According to the song, everyone i s seek ing, so the quest ion we have to ask ourse lves f rom an evangel i zat ion s tandpoint i s “Why am I not g iv ing people that reason? I be l i eve , and others a re seek ing, so why not help people see Jesus?” The chorus o f the song s tates “ I ’m running on, I ’m running on empty ; running on, running bl ind: running on, running into the sun, but I ’m running behind. ” How many people do we know who are running, but wi thout d i rect ion, perhaps “on empty , ” perhaps “b l ind, ” perhaps “ into the sun” or , perhaps “ running behind?” ( I f you haven ’t guessed the song ’s t i t le yet , i t ’ s in that chorus ) Deacon Jer ry made a great point in hi s homi ly las t week say ing we shouldn ’t be running from the negat ives in our l i fe , but running to the good, to the Lord. There i s a percept ion outs ide o f Cathol ic i sm that we are a fa i th o f “ thou shal t nots” - a fa i th where we are more consc ious o f t ry ing to avoid wrongs , than doing r ight . For example , running toward the negat i ve would be avoid ing pr ide , whi le the good would be pursuing humi l i ty . I f we are evangel i z ing , we want to port ray our fa i th as one where we emphas ize the good: where we seek humi l i ty over pr ide , char i ty over greed, k indness over envy , pat ience over wrath, chast i ty over lus t , temperance over g lut tony and di l igence over s loth. So when we encounter those who are running bl ind, running into the sun or “Running on Empty” ( Jackson Browne, 1977) l et ’ s run to the good and give them “ some reason to bel i eve . ” ————By the Evangel i zat ion TeamBy the Evangel i zat ion TeamBy the Evangel i zat ion TeamBy the Evangel i zat ion Team

St. Gianna Respect Life: St. Gianna Respect Life: St. Gianna Respect Life: St. Gianna Respect Life: As we begin this third week of

Advent, who in your day is at a vulnerable point in their life? Who is feeling unwanted and invisible? Despair and loneliness are at the heart of the violence against human life. Life is can be very vulnerable at its beginning and its end. The frail and elderly who depend upon others for care are defenseless. Children, babies and the unborn who depend on others for care are defenseless. How can we reach out to those in despair or overwhelmed with loneliness to share the all-encompassing love of Jesus? Advent is the perfect time to go visit someone who is lonely. Consider taking a meal to someone who is homebound. On a snowy day, offer to drive an elderly neighbor to Mass or to the doctor. Give a young couple a date night and take care of their children for a couple of hours. Who needs you to offer respite to them as a caregiver?

“Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.”

-St. Teresa of Calcutta

Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration "His name will be called Emmanuel,

which means God-with-us." Mt. 1:23 As we quickly approach Christmas and prepare

ourselves for the Second Coming of Our Lord,

we remember the way that Jesus chooses to

remain with us as we await His return...in the

Holy Eucharist. The church is open during office

hours and later on Fridays so we can stop in to

spend some quiet time with Emmanuel,

God-with-us.

HEROES OF THE CATHOLIC

REFORMATION Dr. Tim Gray, renowned Scripture scholar and president of the

Augustine Institute, provides fascinating insights about the Protestant Reformation and the ensuing Catholic Counter Reformation. He discusses how holy men and women worked from within the Church, as they do in every age, to bring forth much-needed reform. Hear how necessary changes were brought about by holy heroes such as Giles of Viterbo, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Teresa of Ávila, St. Charles Borromeo, and others. We ask for a donation of $4.00 per CD. Please make checks payable to “St. Joseph Catholic Church”. All donations go toward the purchase of future CDs.

The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in St. Johns (1009 S. US-27 in the Southpoint Mall) is looking for additional volunteers (men and women). The ideal candidates must enjoy working with others. We have over 140 awesome volunteers who do a variety of functions to help us in our ministry. Our volunteers: accept donations, sort/price items,

cashier, move merchandise/inventory, recycle items, pick-up furniture, clean/vacuum/dust, etc. Each volunteer chooses what part is of most interest to them. We sometimes need volunteers who have light construction type experience for little projects. If you are interested in finding out how you might be able to help, please call John Thelen at 989 292-7057.
