N E W S L E T T E RFrom the PrincipalOn Sunday, Christians all over the world celebrated Pentecost; the day on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. From a historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started – the birthday of the Church.

The events of Pentecost are recorded in The Acts of the Apostles. Chapter 2 begins, “And when the day of Pentecost had come, [the first followers of Jesus] were all together in one place” (2:1). Suddenly, a sound came from heaven, like a strong wind, filling the house where the people had gathered. Something like tongues of fire rested on their heads. “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak” (2:4). The words spoken by the early Christians would have been heard by thousands of Jewish pilgrims who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate Shavuot. At some point, Peter stood up and preached his first sermon. In that sermon, he explained that Jesus had been raised and had poured out the Spirit as God had promised. Peter urged his listeners to turn their lives around and be baptised, and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. According to The Acts of the Apostles, about 3,000 people were added to the Church that day.

As Christians today, it is through the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation that we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are several Saint Mary’s students who will be confirmed by Bishop Ken next month. In preparation for this special ritual, they will be learning about these beautiful gifts:

Wisdom Wisdom helps us recognise the importance of others and the importance of keeping God central in our livesUnderstanding The ability to comprehend the meaning of God's messageKnowledge The ability to think about and explore God's revelation, and to recognise there are mysteries of faith beyond usCounselThe ability to see the best way to follow God's plan when we have choices to makeFortitudeThe courage to do what we know is rightPiety Piety helps us pray with true devotion and reverenceFear of the Lord A feeling of amazement before God, whose friendship we do not want to lose

Pentecost presents each of us with an opportunity to consider how we are living each day. It is a real challenge to live in the presence of the Holy Spirit, but when we do so consciously, it is a truly empowering way to live. Rather than living in the Spirit, we sometimes limit ourselves through our own fears, resentments, low expectations, and our tendency to believe we have all the answers. Pentecost offers a chance to renew our trust in God, to recognise the presence of the Spirit in our lives, and thus, to increase our capacity to live with more joy, peace, patience and love.

APRE NewsMay – the month of Mums and MaryMay is designated the month of Mary by the Catholic Church and it is completely fitting that Mother’s Day falls in May. The Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians falls on May the 24th, however will end the week with celebrations on Friday including Mass and our annual Mary’s Got Talent Show. The characteristics and responsibilities of motherhood are truly something worth celebrating. There is much written about Mary’s response to be the Mother of God, that notion of an unconditional YES, which for me this is the most endearing thing about mums. The word we often hear from Mums' mouths might actually be NO, which context may be a Yes to protect, care, nurture and ultimately love their children.

My son told me this joke the week before Mother’s Day last year.

A little boy asks his father, “Why are you called a man? What does that mean?” The father replies, “A man is someone who looks after the family and protects them. He does all the hard work.” The boy quickly responds, “Then I want to be a man, just like Mum.”

My son may seriously be trying to tell me something. I have been looking for a nice Father’s day reply to that but can’t find one.

Kind regardsMr Martin PerrettAPRE

Year 3/4 String Immersion…A New Direction! The Year 3 students are being allocated their violins this week, and Monday’s class was very excited to hold their instruments for the very first time. Year 4 students have had the opportunity to try instruments other than violin, such as viola, cello and double bass, and this has been a very entertaining experience. Mrs Kennedy, our Strings Tutor, will make recommendations to parents if their son or daughter shows particular promise on an alternative sting instrument. As the Year 4 students have grown since the allocation of

Community NoticesQueensland Health wants to share these important flu facts with our school community:

1. Flu is dangerous for everyone, but particularly for children. During 2017, there were over 56,000 cases of confirmed cases of influenza in Queensland, of which over 10,000 were in children under 10 years of age.

Having an annual flu vaccine will help keep you, your family and the community healthy this flu season.

Visit: http://conditions.health.qld.gov.au/HealthCondition/condition/14/217/82/Influenza-The-Flu

In 2018, Queensland Health is also offering free influenza vaccine to children aged 6 months to less than five years.

2. Flu strains change each yearThere is a new flu vaccine every year because flu viruses mutate easily and often.

3. Flu spreads easily between people, particularly childrenYou can get flu by either breathing in droplets that are infected with flu virus or from touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching your own mouth, nose or eyes. Young children are more likely to spread flu because they tend to have greater contact with others, are infectious for longer than an average adult, and may not always cover their mouths when coughing and sneezing or wash their hands often enough. They are super-spreaders.

4. If you (or your child) are unwell, stay home until betterFlu causes adults and children to miss out on their regular activities, such as attending school, work, family outings, sporting events or just hanging out with friends. Anyone with the flu should stay home, rest and recover for about 7 – 10 days.

5. We can all make a differenceRemember it is not ‘just the flu’, it is a serious disease. Having an annual flu vaccine will help keep you, your family and the community healthy this flu season.
